This study finds out the impact of educational expenditure and school enrolment on poverty reduction in Nigeria for the period between 1980 and 2012. The result of the research work was determined through the use of multiple regression techniques. Ordinary least square (OLS) properties of the model variables were investigated by conducting a regression analysis using annual time series data for the observed sampled years and the sources of the data were mainly from CBN statistical bulletin and Federal Office of Statistic (FOS) now National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) annual statements and reports.
The result of the study shows that, the educational expenditure, primary and secondary school enrolment and GDP have relationship with the dependent variable (poverty). Though, educational expenditure and primary school enrolment have direct and positive relationship with poverty while GDP and secondary school enrolment have negative or inverse relationship with poverty reduction in Nigeria within the observed years.
Based on the above findings, it was recommended that the government should increase the annual budgetary fund being allocated to educational sector to improve the standard of education in the country. Also to make it compulsory for the children in the country to have primary and secondary education that can increase the level of literate at the same time achieve poverty reduction in Nigeria.
