Contents
- 1 Game Board
- 45 Expedition cards (values indicated on the cards: 2-10, in five colors)
- 15 Wager cards (3 of each color)
- 1 Rule booklet
The Game Board
The game board depicts five routes upon which players strive to form expeditions throughout the course of the game. The routes lead to remote and mysterious corners around the world: the Himalayan mountains, the Central American rainforest, the Egyptian desert, a mysterious volcano, and the bottom of the sea.
The Game Components
Each player starts with 8 cards distributed at random. The remaining cards are placed in a draw pile beside the board. During each turn, a player must either place a card on one of his or her expedition columns, or discard a card face up on the board. Discarding a card allows the other player to snatch it up on his or her next turn!
Game Attributes
Card tactics are key to winning this strategy game for two players! Be ready to take chances and test your luck!
The Manual
The rules of the game are very simple, but don't get the wrong impression! There is much more to Lost Cities than it might seem at first glance.
Sample Scenarios
The full-color illustrated manual provides a detailed explanation of how to score the game, including hints on when you should or shouldn't use a wager card.
Lost Cities: The Board Game
Fans looking for a 4-player version will also enjoy the board game version of Lost Cities.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2016I bought this card game because I wanted a 2-player game to enjoy with my husband. The rules are simple but the gameplay allows for quite a bit of strategy and opportunity to learn your opponent. We've enjoyed playing it together and also play against our 8-year old son. He picked the game up quickly but it was too difficult for our 6-year old. The box says for ages 10+, but this was my experience.
The cards have a good quality feel and the game box is sturdy. The graphics are nice, but personally I don't feel they add much to the game.
We've owned it about 2 months now and now keep a running score. The game doesn't come with score cards or tally sheets, but a quick search on the internet brought up several printable versions. Since the game only consists of cards and a playing board, there is plenty of room to store a pencil and small paper in the plastic insert or larger pieces of paper under the plastic insert. (We chose to keep score digitally in a spreadsheet.)
The product description includes accurate pictures of the box, playing board, and cards. I've taken a couple photos of the inside in case anyone is interested in how it fits together on the inside. Hope this review helps.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2016My wife and I really love this game. Very simple, but pretty fun. You can play several rounds in not too much time and it has plenty of suspense built in. All the makings of a great game.
If I nitpick, I can find a couple of problems with the game:
1. These cards are quite large. This is a problem because in this game you always hold 8 cards. Why didn't they make them bridge-sized, like other card games?
2. Adding up the points at the end is surprisingly difficult. My wife and I have to check our work all the time because we have made errors so frequently. You add up all these integers, then subtract 20, then multiply by your betting factor, then possibly add in your bonus. Then you go on to the next venture. I was told there would be no math!
Those are pretty small nitpicks. This is a pretty classic game and one that we reach for often. It has a good ratio of luck and skill that keeps us coming back.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2015I really love this game! It's the perfect game for two (it really can only be played by 2 people). It seems simple at the outset, but there is some real strategy (and a bit of luck) involved in winning. It's easy to learn, and fast-paced. You can either play if for hours, or just a couple of hands (about 10-20 minutes per hand, depending on fast you play). The cards are beautifully illustrated, and if you wish you could play it without the board. You have to lay the cards out on a table, so it's not a good game for an airplane, but it would be a good game to take on a camping trip or vacation, because all you really need is the deck of cards. I think it's a good game for kids (10 and up) as well as accomplished game-players who are older because there is a fair amount of strategizing. Really glad I found this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2016Lost Cities is a great 2-player card game that is fun for both serious and casual gamers.
The goal of the game is to play cards that are in 5 different expeditions (suits) which correspond with the colors of the cards. Each turn you either play or discard one card and then draw a new card so that you always have 8 in your hand. You can only play a card if it is higher numbered than the last card you played in that expedition - so no playing a blue 5 if you already played a blue 6. There are also 3 investment cards that you can play for each expedition. These double, triple, and quadruple the points earned for the expedition.
At the end of the game you add up all the cards in each expedition and subtract 20 from each.
The strategy of the game comes into play based on the scoring and determining which expeditions to start. Once you start an expedition it will be scored. If all you play is just a yellow 2, you've just earned yourself -18 points for the yellow expedition - not good!
There is also a lot of strategy in determinig which cards to discard, as your opponent can draw from these. This white 8 doesn’t help me, but it might be just what my opponent needs!
The only negative is determining the score at the end of the game. Get your pen and paper or calculator out!
Other than that, this is an excellent card game that is easy to learn but has a lot of depth!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2016If you are trying to decide between the board game and the card game, I recommend the card game, if you are just wondering what to add to your game collection next, I recommend this game here. Personally I'm not a fan of 2 player competitive games but this one does it very well. The rules are very easy to learn, (the math is a little harder) but the strategies are hard to master. Simply place cards in numerically ascending order by color to earn money, simple right? At the end of the round you pay fees based on the trips you actually placed cards on (sometimes double fees, or even quadruple fees yikes!) and then you add up how much you earned on those trips by the total of each color you played, the player with the highest score after 3 rounds wins. It is a very simple yet very fun game for 2 people, my fiance and I play this game often, some times multiple times in a row and it is always a good choice to pull out if you just need to burn 20 to 30 mins, heck you can even play a single round game if you only have 5 or 10. Grab a copy of this game and a good (or not good) friend or significant other (and maybe a calculator) and you will both leave the game happier regardless of who wins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this quick yet strategic 2 player card game!
Really enjoy this 2 player card game! We had it for four months now and played it many times with my husband. We own selection of two player games such as Targi, Patchwork, Hanamikoji, Agricola ACBAS and 7 Wonders Duel. They all are great (highly recommend them btw) and different, but I especially enjoy this one. Quick set up, clear rules, a bit of luck, strategic card placement and repeat. Sometimes we would play over 5 rounds in one go! Yes, it is strategic as well. Player can only have 8 cards on their hands, therefore, each turn you either add a card to your expedition, or discard it on the board in the middle. You pick the card either from the deck, or one from the discarded cards (top one). Once the card had been placed into an expedition, you cannot remove it, next card placed has to be of higher value. Objective is to build total value of your expeditions as high as you can. Sometimes you have to choose to give up the card your opponent desires, to free space in hand and pick one from the deck, hoping you'll get the one you need. Other times all cards you have are great and high value, so you don't want to play them yet, but at the same time you need to play one, so you have to make a hard choice. It is about keeping the right balance. You also "pay" for each expedition you committed to (cards you've put down on your side of the board) at the end of the game, which can make your total score go into minus if you're not careful, or commit to several expeditions, but cannot build their value.
The game takes little space, we did take it with us when traveling. Which was great! The board is double sided - one side Basic game (5 expeditions), other Long game (6 expeditions). We started off by playing 5, but now only play 6. It does make it more interesting with 6. Overall, one round takes 20-30 minutes.
Artwork is ok. I've seen pictures of first edition online, and visually I prefer it over this one. However, when in play, I noticed I never look at the pictures anyway, just the top expedition symbol and numeric value. You can see from my pictures - cards are all different, but artwork follows the theme of expedition. Cards are good size and fit in hand nicely (see picture with typical credit card in white at the side for comparison). They ate exactly 11 cm by 7 cm, in case if you want to buy sleeves. We didn't. Really recommend it, box says it fits ages 10+. We are couple of decades ahead of the limit and do enjoy it nevertheless!
