Addicted to Outrage: How Thinking Like a Recovering Addict Can Heal the Country Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 507 ratings

Glenn Beck, the New York Times bestselling author of The Great Reset—issues a startling challenge to people on both sides of the aisle: America is addicted to outrage, we’re at the height of a twenty-year bender, and we need an intervention.

In the instant
New York Times bestseller, Glenn Beck addresses how America has become more and more divided—both politically and socially. Americans are now less accepting, less forgiving, and have lost faith in many of the country’s signature ideals. They are quick to point a judgmental finger at the opposing party, are unwilling to doubt their own ideologies, and refuse to have any self-awareness whatsoever. Beck states that this current downward spiral will ultimately lead to the destruction of everything America has fought so hard to preserve. This is not simply a Republican problem. This is not simply a Democratic problem. This is everyone’s burden, and we need to think like recovering addicts and change.

Mirroring traditional twelve-step programs, Beck outlines the actions that Americans must follow in order to prevent a farther decline down this current path of hostile bitterness. Drawing from his own life experiences and including relevant examples for each step, he is able to lead us to a more hopeful, happy future. From learning how to believe in something greater than ourselves to understanding the importance of humility, each chapter encourages self-reflection and growth.

Addicted to Outrage is a timely and necessary guide for how Americans—right and left—must change to survive.

This book will help you think differently about politics
If you're satisfied with the way things are going in Washington then this book isn't for you. But if you want to understand what's happening to our country's politics--and most importantly, how to fix it--then I strongly recommend "Addicted to Outrage." Few people understand Washington and the media better than Glenn Beck. In this book, he'll walk you through tough questions that encourage introspection and growth. It's well worth your time.

The book is between a 4 and 5 star - but I will lean to round up. Glenn Beck brings home his own journey to recognizing his addiction to outrage - paralleling his own struggle with alcoholism and drug abuse. Written in a clear and straightforward tone, Beck laments the devolution of discourse and interaction in not only our politics, but our communities as well. Weaving thoughtful observations with Beck's reflection on his own life and role in getting us to this moment in history, you will come away after reading the book with a healthy self-questioning of your own role, as well as what you should do to try and break the addiction to outrage and begin the healing. A good read.

I became disaffected with Beck sometime in the middle of his ranting, raving, and foaming from the mouth tirades, but I saw him speak with Ben Shapiro and he seemed older, more experienced - and beautifully wizened. The kind that comes only from the purging processes of life, and that's exactly what Glenn delivers in this book. From someone who has been with CNN and Fox, Beck has a fascinating purview on global politics. I've noted myself breathing deeper and not jumping on the bandwagon with every news headline that flashes on my screen since reading this thoughtful invitation to return to a levelheaded public discourse and regard people as people - not as enemies. Thanks, Glenn.

Pun intended. We could all learn something from this book. I also believe that we as a wonderful nation need to come together if we are going to survive. No mater what side of the isle we are on if we don’t listen to the other side with respect or an open mind we will continue to be divided. Thank you Glenn for writing this wonderful book. It was very enlightening. I hope god continues to bless America. In my opinion we are still the greatest country in the world.

As someone who now eschews political labels, not feeling "at home" or having confidence in either of the two major political parties as they exist today, I have found Glenn's similar journey and insight very helpful. This book examines how social media has contributed to the breakdown of civility and the increase of tribalism in American culture. If you are concerned about these issues, whether you come from a right-leaning background or a left-leaning one, you owe it to yourself to give this book a read. Hopefully, it will encourage those who read it to evaluate their own behavior towards others (as we all have likely contributed to the breakdown without realizing it), and influence the way they interact with people who have differences of opinion in the future.

Beck has a great point. Outrage feels good for a while, but it does no good whatsoever. Our rants over the lying Ford didn't change a single democrat's mind about Kavanaugh. The left's threats and protests didn't change a single republican's mind. What did sway the few open minds left were the facts and our belief in due process. Have any NFL protests been ended by calls from the president to "fire those ignorant SOB's ?" No. It only made martyrs of Kaepernick and got a couple hundred of his friends and fellow players to join him for a time. Did shouts of racist and Nazi make anyone tune into a game again? I doubt it. Anyone with a slightly open mind could brought to realize that less than 1% of law enforcement is corrupt and also that less than 1% of the NFL is anti-law enforcement or anti-america. As Beck points out, those are the arguments we should be having. If only we can overcome our addiction. Unfortunately a high percentage on one side dismiss everything Beck says because he said Obama might be a racist. Even worse, just as high a percentage on the other end of the political spectrum dismiss Beck because he gave soccer balls to illegal immigrant children. This addiction is destroying our nation. Just as the Russians planned? ;)

Thanks again for a sleepless night with a great book. Glenn has inspired us to look at our lives and friends differently, our more left leaning friends, listen to them and react with calm. Our right leaning friends that want to start fighting, explain calmly why they should not. The way to fix our nations problems are clearly stated and can be easily carried out. Thanks to reading most of Glenn's books we have a unique prospective on the America we find ourselves in today. God bless and may the light of truth make it's way through the darkness.

In a world growing more and more divided, Beck offers a path toward reunification. This book is not for hardliners of either stripe. it's mean for people looking for a way to re connect with their neighbors in a time where we need to find our center more than anytime in the last few decades. If you've lost a friend to the other side of the political divide this is a path on how to possibly get them back.

No matter what you think of Glenn Beck read this book. Beck nails it on the head in our current political battles of just being against the other side. He pulls no punches in the faults of both sides and implores us to come together for the common good. Insightful and revealing in analysis of current and future issues we should be dealing with Beck gives some background you may not be aware of. Reading this may not change any political views but it just may change you and allow you to disagree with someone and still call them a friend.
