The Forever Dog: Surprising New Science to Help Your Canine Companion Live Younger, Healthier, and Longer Hardcover – October 12, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
#1 New York Times Bestseller
In this pathbreaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans—cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders—also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health.
The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them.
The Forever Dog prescriptive plan focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food—including what the commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know—and offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often don’t think about can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and wellbeing, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash.”
Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine health—if you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025I happened to find this book in a bookshop window in a really cool downtown I was visiting on my birthday. It looked like a fun read so I bought it and it was INCREDIBLY educational, well written, and life changing. I have used and used this book. I brought out my book tabs that I haven't used since college because there is so much great info in this one book for your dog. If you love dogs, please get this book and read it. Learn and use it. It's been super helpful to even save money on vet trips (for minor ailments) and I do think that it will benefit them in the long term as well. I have recommended this book to everyone I meet that has any interest in dogs at all. I have given out copies as prizes for trivia because I think this book is so beneficial. This is in my top three animal books and I use it all the time to refer back to and re-learn something again. We can do SO much better for our doggos, and we should. The authors make it very easy to do and understand and the amount of citation to credible, legitimate resources is remarkable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025You'll be amazed by how easy and cheap most of the things you can do for your dog are. We owe the best care to our pets and this book will teach you how to do that. No dog should die before their time or be unhealthy the last years of their life!!
There have been dogs and other animals in my household since before I was born. I owned and operated a small boarding and grooming business for over 25 years. I wish I had known many years ago all that I learned from this book. I deeply regret shortening the lives of my dogs because of my ignorance. My dogs that lived to be 12 - 15 years old, should have lived to 20 - 24 years old!! I hope it's not too late to extend the good years for my now 15 year old dog. BTW, I find I use this book like a reference book and keep it handy because friends and family ask me often for advice in caring for their dogs. I always recommend this book to them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024I was moved to tears after reading the dedication and the first quote in the first chapter. The book is dedicated to “Sammie, Reggie, and Gemini, our first teachers.”
“We are all just walking each other home…” - Ram Dass “...and we hope it will be a really long walk.” - Dr. Becker and Rodney
As a pet professional and self-proclaimed “Longevity Junkie,” I came away inspired, validated, and completely satisfied. This book over-delivers!
I've been a professional dog trainer and pet nutrition specialist, a.k.a. "dog food geek", for years, and this book has given me the science, information, and solutions to empower my clients to do better. It helps me fulfill my purpose of helping dogs live long, healthy, happy lives.
If you've lost a beloved canine companion to illness and want to know more so you never go through the same thing again, this book is for you.
If you're not familiar with topics like canine nutrition, raw feeding, and how our lifestyle choices impact our dogs' lives, this book can be overwhelming. It's like drinking from a firehose.
But don't let that scare you off! Every journey starts with a single step, and this book is a treasure trove of knowledge. Take it one chapter at a time, and you'll find yourself becoming more confident and informed. Your dog will thank you for it!

It's a wonderful, easy to digest read packed with scientific knowledge. I will never, ever feed my dog or any of my future dogs kibble ever again. I also appreciate all of the information on how us humans can be healthier. too. Also, from an aesthetic point of view, what a beautiful book it is! From the design of the cover to the materials used. It's high quality, inside and out. My dog loves it too as you can see from the photo :)
