Crispy, but light on air (easily remedied in post)
This is the first nice mic I owned where I didn't need to do sweeten in post. It's still fun to throw on some sparkly saturation and leveling, but I almost always decide to bypass the saturation. Because of its treatment of high end there's pleeeeenty of intelligibility, whether shouting or speaking softly. Maybe it's a different kind of "air" that you get with a U87 or tube LDC, but the treble is never spitty, and now we're splitting hairs. Occasionally I use a de-esser. The point is, you actually don't *need* to. We use these for VO every day. The common mantra in VO studios is that one shouldn't use a 416 for long form content like audiobooks, because "it can be fatiguing to listen to such a hyped-up voice for hours. But it's perfect for commercials, ADR, podcasts, interviews." I have found this to be rubbish. The only argument against using this mic for VO is if your room isn't well treated. That can cause problems indoors in a very reflective room. But why would you be recording there anyway!? :)

EXCELLENT build quality, all metal and tightly assembled in Germany. It has great versatility. You can use it for voiceover, talking head videos, film making, ASMR, and more. It has a tendency to pickup and amplify the environmental sound but does a pretty good job of rejecting sound from the sides and rear. Adding a good noise gate will make this microphone sound pristine. It’s not super smooth or rich, but has a clear/crisp quality sound that (to my ears) is delightful. In summary, the solid build, clear sound, wonderful versatility, and high grade German components, makes this my favorite “do everything” mic. Rent one and try it on your voice before making the investment, but I’m certain it’ll sound exquisite for most.

I use this mic exclusively for voice-over work. I purchased this mic with a bit of trepidation. What was I scared of? Quality? No, I was scared of getting a fake. When the mic arrived, the serial numbers were inexplicably covered by little white stickers. I can't imagine what the purpose would be so, I contacted Sennheiser with the serial number. They not only confirmed the mic was authentic but they confirmed that Amazon was an authorized reseller. They even gave me the date of manufacture and original sale! But I was still nervous. I just spent a thousand bucks!

I already own a Neumann TLM49 and wasn't sure this mic would offer me any real advantage. In my radio days and after, I heard people rave about this mic for V/O work but frankly, I couldn't seen the point. There are mics you can get good results with that fall well below the $1K threshold. I've owned RODE NTKs, SURE SM7's & KSM44s, Sennheiser 421s, ElectroVoice RE20 and several others. Even a few below $200... I used to have a home-made V/O booth but when I moved, I destroyed it. I had no room for it at my new place. Silly me. I forgot about room noise, birds chirping, sirens... Large diaphragm condenser mics seem to attract sounds you probably didn't even know were there.

So I began to research options and the SENNHIESER 416 kept coming back to the surface. I wanted a mic that would be more forgiving of my work area right now. My early tests surprised me. This mic's excellent but relatively small directional path made getting a good, clean quality recording possible even with minimal sound treatment. I paired it with a RODE swivel mount boom arm and cheesy but effective Eggsnow Universal Shock Mount and attached the whole thing to my desk. Despite my untreated office, there were few reflections from the untreated wall and computer monitor all under 3 feet away, behind the mic. My test produced a fairly room noise free recording. Noise rejection is outstanding. No birds. No chatter from the painting crew just outside banging ladders around and talking as they painted our townhouse.

Gain is ample. I don't have to drive the 416 hard to get a strong signal. The mic is tiny and light. I don't need a giant 3 wheeled mic stand and counter-weight system to hold this puppy in place. And it's double duty! If I decide to do field recordings for video, I now have a durable mic that is up to the task. This mic isn't going to solve your issue if you live in a cardboard box underneath the expressway but... It just might be the best investment you make before you blow your wad on acoustic treatments. Good voice-overs can be done on a budget. This may not seem like a budget solution but I can get good, reliable, professional results right now. So I can save, budget and plan for my next upgrade (a real V/O booth!) But since I'm already spending less time on edits and re-takes, I consider that money in my pocket.

What can I say? The microphone has great side and rear projection, great sound fidelity, and is great for any space that doesn't echo. I haven't used it in small rooms yet, but shorter microphones have better rejection for those spaces anyway.
Perfect for what I need and if you're making film, corporate video, or high-end content you can treat yourself to one of the best mics at the under-1k price point.

Sturdy built, slim and sleek look and feel. Purchased this gem mainly for Voice Over work and agree with other positive reviewers here. The main thing to take note is the relatively small pick up pattern--which is about the size of a circle you make while touching thumb and index finger with one hand (if that makes sense) to give you an idea of the "sweet spot" which only becomes an issue if you tend to move slightly off mic while recording.

But this can be remedied with a little practice and is NOT an issue otherwise. I don't find need for a pop filter for vocals if you angle it slightly off center instead of aiming it directly to the lips from an open palm distance so as to not have the mic take the brunt of vocal breaths directly.

I channel it through an Avalon 737 SP strip and find absolutely no need to apply ANY tweaks on the digital processing end whatsoever.

Another thing worthy of note is that this is an excellent cam mic with quite a range to it. While initially setting it up using headphones to get the proper setting on my mic pre, I had inadvertently positioned it out an open window and was shocked to be able to clearly hear what my next door neighbors were saying from about 30+ yards away!

Not that I recommend using it for such purposes but that range impressed the heck out of me just the same. Well maybe a handy feature to consider at pool parties and other gatherings--just saying.

This is a great mic well worth the price from a solid company well known for high quality audio gear.

I've read discussions on forums from audio engineers saying they can achieve the same sound quality with lesser priced mics by adding digital tweaks but that is like saying the imitation butter is just as tasty as the real thing--not so by a long shot.
