How to Use Them

Gently stir as much as you like into acrylic color for the viscosity and transparency you want
Mediums can be thinned by diluting with up to 25% water – distilled water will give best results
Ultra Matte Medium makes a weak tinting white when you add more than 50% of the medium
Gloss, Satin and Matte Medium can be used as a lightweight collaging glue, applied with a brush or sponge

How to Use Glazing Medium

Gently stir as much as you like into acrylic color/medium for the viscosity and transparency you want
If used with softer body paints, the viscosity will remain similar
Can be thinned by diluting with up to 25% water – use distilled water for best results
If working over a long period, mix into color on the palette to keep it fresh and skin-free longer
Compatible with all Liquitex products; use on all acrylic-friendly surfaces

How to Use Slo-Dri Medium

Before varnishing, ensure paint surface is fully dry (72 hours to two weeks for acrylics, depending on thickness, and 6-12 months for oils)
Apply 1-2 coats of Gloss Medium as a permanent isolating barrier first and leave to dry for three days
Once completely dry, clean the surface with a lint-free rag dampened with mineral spirits
Place the artwork flat on a surface before varnishing; Stir Soluvar gently before use and apply horizontally with a wide, flat soft-hair brush/pad or spray
For Soluvar Spray, use long, even mists, covering the surface top to bottom while moving from one side to the other; Apply 1-2 thin layers, leaving 24 hours between coats

Product Description

Liquitex offers the broadest range of acrylic mediums to inspire creativity at every stage of the painting process. Liquitex Fluid Mediums perform much in the way that their name implies, they are fluid in nature and reduce viscosity of heavier paints and gels. They tend to self-level and do not retain brushstrokes. Liquitex Fluid Mediums modify acrylic paints in a variety of ways and contain acrylic resins to maintain or enhance adhesion and durability. Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium Fluid Painting Medium increases the volume of paint while maintaining the opacity of the color it is mixed into. Economically doubles the volume of paint by adding up to an equal amount (50%) of medium to color with little or no noticeable loss in opacity or change in hue. Opacity of colors mixed with Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium will be higher than if the color had been thinned to the same degree with any other medium, except Modeling Paste. The degree to which the color can be extended will vary among the different pigments. When over 50% is added, Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium can act as a weak tinting white, increasing the value of the original color approximately one level; light colors will be affected less than dark colors. Colors mixed with Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium dry to a matte finish. APPLICATIONS: AS GOUACHE: Mix with opaque paint for a matte sheen and gouache (opaque watercolor) look. These "gouache" colors are water resistant flexible lightfast and permanent when dry. Traditional gouache colors are not permanent and are susceptible to accidental re-wetting and must be well protected when finished. Use when running out of color during painting. When you have reached the halfway point of painting a specific area, determine if you have enough paint to finish. I bought this to get a matte finish with my acrylic paints, as I do a lot of illustration work and matte surfaces are easier to photograph and scan. I work semi-regularly with gouache and I like the flat, velvety finish. The finish of this medium is similar, though using it with satin or glossy acrylic paints doesn’t create the same smooth, level surface that you’d get from using either traditional or acrylic gouache. It thins the paints a bit, so that thick, velvety consistency isn’t there. But the surface sheen is comparable.

This ultra matte medium mixes with both heavy body and soft body/fluid acrylics very well, and I imagine it would also work with acrylic inks. It extends the drying time a little, works with water and a little goes a long way! I found that I needed very little of this medium to get a matte finish with most of my acrylics. Increasing the amount of medium reduces the pigmentation and coverage of the mix, which is fine if you’re glazing with it or using watercolor painting techniques, but it can also make the paint a bit more streaky, especially if you’re using soft body/fluid acrylics. With heavy body acrylics, the paint consistency, pigment load and color are also a factor. So, finding the right balance for what you’re doing at the time, as well as the consistency and pigment load of the acrylic paint you’re working with, is essential. Since I build up my colors slowly with a lot of layers most of the time, this medium suits a lot of my acrylic work nicely.

Oh, I also have tried using a fine layer of this medium on finished work to create a matte surface. While it definitely works, it adds the slightest cloudiness to the paint surface that’s is visible on some colors. It’s probably best to go with a matte varnish if that is needed, but in a pinch for work that will be scanned/photographed and processed digitally (illustration, hand-painted motifs for design, etc), it’s not much of an issue.

How does this compare to Liquitex’s Matte Medium?
I also have the regular matte medium and, in comparison, this one is definitively more matte. It creates a flat finish very similar to gouache, even with acrylics that are pretty glossy to start with, while the regular matte medium leaves more of a satin finish with glossier paints and really only gets to a truly matte finish when mixing it with more satin-looking paints.

When they say “ultra matte”, they really do mean ultra matte!
