Product Description
Making prestigious art papers since 1492, Arches has been the paper of choice for artists from Van Gogh and Matisse to Picasso, Dali, Warhol and beyond. Hailed as brilliant, this archival paper is mold-made with 100% cotton fibers, has a natural white luster and stands the test of time so your work shines long after you've laid down your masterpiece. A process exclusive to Arches, sizing “to the core” gives every sheet on every pad of Arches cold press watercolor paper astounding absorbency, as the pH-neutral, gelatin-sized internal and external fibers hold pigment in place without over-saturation. Easily correct liquid media mistakes repeatedly with minimal warping to this textured paper. Each pristine sheet of this 140lb cold press watercolor paper has been securely fastened on the top short side with a strong, pH-neutral adhesive that also aids in shape-retention. Not only are these watercolor supplies durable, but they are also versatile. Arches can be used as more than just watercolor painting paper; this exquisite, thick paper functions well with all wet techniques such as ink, gouache, and acrylic painting as the cotton fibers adapt to whatever medium you choose to craft your work. With 3 spectacular sizes available in pads of 12 140lb (300gsm) sheets, this is the ideal painting paper for artists. The best watercolor paper on Amazon - to me.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2022When I first started watercoloring, I tried using whatever paper I could find at my local big box art store (I won't name names, but its very common paper at a very common store). My art was... pathetic, blurry, faded in all the wrong places, and just not very good. And I almost stopped painting with watercolor altogether.
If it wasn't for the fact that watercolor paint is more seemingly more environmentally friendly than, say, acrylic painting with its plastics and oil painting with all the chemicals needed, I would have given up on watercolors altogether. But I love how watercolor pigments only need to be rewetted to come back alive, how I can travel anywhere with only a small palette, some basic brushes, a bit of water and some paper, and be painting within minutes - little mess, little fuss, and beautiful ephemeral artwork.
But... The paper... If you have the very best brushes ever created and the world's finest professional pigments, but you are using bad paper, your art will never turn out the way you want it. Period. Whereas, if you had the worlds cheapest brushes and pigments, but are using fine cotton, well-sized watercolor paper - your art can be breathtaking.
All that is to say, if you only spend your art supply budget to buy good, cotton watercolor paper, and not fancy brushes or paints, you will still be able to create masterpieces, because the paper will behave predictably and reliably with the water and pigments. You will be able to lift pigments when and where you want. You can add several washes of color to the same areas without severe warping or ruining the sizing. You can paint fine, hair's breadth details with smooth application or you can soften an abstract background with gradients and wet washes in beautiful patterns. You can use masking fluid (and not remove it for some time) and not have the paper tear when you do remove it, and on and on.
But to do that, you must have good watercolor paper. You simply must. When I finally coughed up the extra money to buy a pad of Arches 140# coldpress is when my artwork finally reached a level that I wasn't humiliated to have another person see my paintings. There are plenty of other brands of cotton rag paper that I understand are excellent as well, but few are at a pricepoint that would allow me to paint as a hobby. Arches manages to do that as well, at least right now. So, really, unless you are a professional artist, (and maybe even then) Arches is perhaps your best all around choice for a watercolor medium, and I can absolutely see how it rules all the discussion boards, youtube videos, and watercolor class discussions as the top pick for watercolor paper.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024Many so-called "watercolor" papers (and journals) are a waste of money, but this is the real deal, in a thinner format. The paint moves around, as it's supposed to, and you can lift off color, unlike with cheaper papers. It might be a little pricey for a beginner, or a child, but the results of your efforts are much better, so even for a beginner, it might be better to use "the good stuff," and eliminate some frustration. I had recently purchased a Betterpress but was disappointed in the paper's performance with watercolor. I thought perhaps Arches paper came in 140 lb., and I found this! It works beautifully with the Betterpress, and painting on it is So much better! I'm also thinking about making my own watercolor journal with it, unless Arches already makes one...

I cut it to size as needed to use it for many different projects.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024I like that you can used a lot of water w this paper. Although I’ve always been a fan of using the Arches watercolor paper, some Arches pads I’ve received seems to not have the same high standards as past purchases. I’m not sure why that is!? I think if it’s not high quality paper, then the price shouldn’t be high either.

Pra aquarela um papel de qualidade faz toda a diferença. Percebi bastante diferença nas transições de cores, mais suaves nesse do que em outros papéis que testei
