Not the best by far, but a great bargain

Not the best by far, but a great bargain
If you want to paint watercolors on a budget, I would absolutely recommend Arteza. It's not the same quality as 100% cotton paper, but it will get you partway there. I use it for both watercolor and mixed media and is typically a sketchbook I will try ideas in before moving on to a more permanent version. I attached 2 pics to show what is possible. One has a lot of cauliflowering due to the way this paper absorbs water. I don't think this looks good and is one thing that bothers me about it. However, if you figure out the right water ratio, you can create some really nice art in these books. I personally will buy other brands first. The paper feels very stiff and almost like cardboard of that makes sense. I can just tell it doesn't absorb paint extremely well.

First thing to understand is that smaller notebooks have a vital purpose to busy professionals who still want to play #Inktober to win. With the grey scale markers, water resistant pens, and a smaller notebook, you can move through every day of Inktober prompts, *every day*, successfully. Because you're not trying to finish an 8x10 here! When I bought them, I wanted to set myself up for success. And it was a critical part of my finish. Compactness means it doesn't matter where you and your inking pen are in your house, or outside it. It will travel. It's important to note that, when I bought this, I knew this wasn't marker paper. With 3 books, I had enough stock to practice with pens and markers and get used to the texture and absorption I knew I'd experience. There was next to no marker bleed through (1 page), and I soon was accustomed to using the watercolour paper with pens (fine-tipped Microns) and markers (both Arteza's grey set, and Copics). The learning curve wasn't very high. Finally, when I did win #Inktober (yay!), I put gesso on the cover and full on painted a candle on there. Because the cover is fabric, you can transform your artistic endeavor into personal memorabilia. The texture takes gesso well. When you win, you can commemorate the win with anything from a gouache, to an acrylic, to an oil painting, personalizing it and your achievement. If you want something to hand down through your family? How about your *art book*. So. That's why I recommend it. It's true, I didn't do any watercolours in these little books, but it adapts well. And it worked for me. You're creative! It may work for you too!

Arteza Watercolor Sketchbooks, 5.5x5.5-inch, 3-Pack, 132 Sheets, Gray Art Journal, Hardcover 110lb Paper Book, Art Supplies for Use as Travel Journal and Mixed Media Pad is a fantastic addition to any artist's toolkit. These sketchbooks have not only captured my heart but also the hearts of my kids.

The compact size is perfect for on-the-go creativity, making it an excellent choice as a travel journal. The sturdy hardcover provides durability and protects the 110lb paper inside. It's clear that Arteza has put a lot of thought into the quality of their product.

What truly stands out is the versatility of these sketchbooks. Whether you're into watercolors, mixed media, or just sketching, these sketchbooks handle it all gracefully. My kids, who have diverse artistic interests, find these sketchbooks to be their go-to choice. The 132 sheets in each pack ensure that they have plenty of space to explore their creativity.

Arteza has truly created a winner with these Watercolor Sketchbooks. They've become an essential part of our creative process, and my kids absolutely adore them. If you're looking for an art journal that can do it all and is loved by both kids and adults alike, this is the one to go for.

I am really on the fence about the review but wanted to offer my experience for those who might be looking for something "more." If I could I would rate 3.5 on these little books. There are so many good features - I just expected more since they are advertised as watercolor books.
So - I ordered these as I was looking for a handy place to swatch, practice, try things out, etc. Generally I am working on a watercolor and will need to test the color or draw a couple perspectives of a subject just to get an idea of where shadows and that need to go, without getting a bunch of graphite on my main project.
The books will work for that, but the main draw back is that the paper (being that it's only 110 lb) absorbs the paint immediately so that the pigment won't move. I have messed around with it a bit since putting my first book in my painting area. I am learning that with more water and a light hand it's a little easier to move - but certainly nothing like the paper I am working on for my painting.
Also, the idea that the paper "won't warp or buckle" as stated on the product page, is absurd. If you add water to paper there is going to be a little bit of this regardless - but the paper is 110 lb. It warps. This isn't a huge deal to me but some people may be disappointed by that.
Next, the watercolor bleeds. This is honestly the first time I am having this issue with watercolor paper. Generally the whole idea is that the color will ONLY go where you put it, or where water is. But in this book it bleeds out a little unless I use very little water with the pigment. (think lipstick bleeding around the edge, that's what it looks like. it must be the water seeping into the paper)
On the plus side, these book are super sturdy and will made. They are bound with stitching, not just glue, so that pages will definitely not come out. I like that added safeguard. Additionally, I like the band that holds it shut, because the pages are going to warp and this keeps the book nice and tidy. There is also a little plastic pocket in the back cover that I can put found images, inspiration, color chips that I use to compare, etc.
Would I buy it again? I don't think so. I will look for pages that allow for more accurate color distribution in future books. BUT this was a 3 pack...so I will either need to give them as gifts or deal with the challenges.

I wasn’t expecting to like this watercolor sketchbook even half as much as I do. I’ve used a competitor’s brand for years now (as I’ve heard a lot of negative things about Arteza as a brand), but this was on sale and I wanted to try something new. I’m so glad I did!

It’s 100% cotton, cold pressed, and textured and durable enough to paint on both sides of the page. It can handle multiple washes and layering, and scrubbing to lift color, all without pilling. I personally love the size, and it fits into my bag just fine, though I’m not sure how convenient it would be for others to take with them on the go.

I love this sketchbook, and after several days of use still can’t find anything negative to say about it. I’ll definitely be reordering!

Reagisce bene anche all'inchiostro. Non avrei potuto fare acquisto migliore. Davvero davvero soddisfatta
