As a budding astrologer, I always wanted to learn how to calculate a chart by hand. I'm a math guy, and it just feels right. This book provides the house cusps for both Placidus and Koch, along with auxillary tables for adjusting their positions and other helpful things (like an atlas of major cities). I'm using it with a course called "Chart Calculations for the Apocolypse" as it was recommended by the instructor, and I've found it to be easy to use once you get the hang of it.

Note that, if you want to cast charts by hand, you'll need an ephemeris to give you both the positions of the planets and the sidereal time. I use Michelson's Ephemeris from 1950 - 20250, Midnight Edition, which the teacher uses. If you are doing self-study without a course, just be sure to know whether your ephemeris is based on midnight or noon.

You'll also need an atlas if you want to look up the latitude and longitude of cities other than the major ones. I've found a physical (i.e. book) atlas with the required coverage is pretty expensive, but NASA actually publishes a CD and accompanying book that covers everything.

The classic book of tables, now with Koch and Placidus houses. Awesome. I finally can let go of the one I have had since 1974!

    Informative.

You have all the well laid out and easy to read tables that you need for locating house cusps: tables of houses for 0 to 60 degree north, solar-siderial time correction, time correction for longitude, diurnal motion of the sun and planets, semidiurnal motion of the moon, etc. There is even a convenient table of longitudes and latitudes for major cities in both the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Tables for both the Placidus and Koch systems are included in this volume.

There is even a clearly written introduction on how to cast a natal horoscope with included examples. Of course you are also going to need a good ephemerides for planet location. I recommend the Rosicrucian ephemerides in conjunction with this book.

    great book

What can I say about this book? It's not a tremendous read - it's not supposed to be. It lives up to its title, and is a useful resource for those of us who cast horoscopes, or are learning to do so. It contains not only tables of houses, but explains how those houses are derived, and gives a wealth of information on casting charts that is difficult to find elsewhere. In short, it doesn't just present the information it claims to present, but it also gives some background on how that information is obtained, and what it represents.
    Worth every penny.
