Maratha Ghorpade Bhonsale Clan Regalia
Two photos of very rare Heraldic symbols of Maratha Raje Bahadur Ghorpade Bhonsale clan (Eldest Branch of the Raghuvanshi Bhonsale Maratha 96 Kulin Kshatriya Clan). These used to be carried in war. The photo at top is of their Black and White Jhanda (Dhwaja) Flag and the bottom photo shows their Black and White Aftabgir Sunscreen staff, which was used to block the Sun's rays. Their Bavuta / Pataka or Alam (Pennant Banner) which is not shown here, is a Tricolour of Green, Black and White. A Dhwaja Flag (Swallowtail / Guidon) has 2 Prongs. These are extremely rare sights now, with the Maratha Kshatriya royal clans losing all their Pre-Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja era Heritage branding. Authentic original Maratha Heraldic Flags with actual Ghorpad insignia are already nowhere to be found.
Maratha Empire Emblem Sunscreen Staff
Bhonsale Chattrapati Maratha Empire Emblem Sunscreen Staff known as the Aftabgir or Sayban or in Hindi as Surajmukhi / Suryamukhi. It is used to block the direction of sun's rays directly from a distance unlike an umbrella. Its purpose is to preserve the inherent divine Varchas of the Raja from coming in contact with that of the Sun's. In case of the Maratha Kulin Kshatriya Bhonsale Chattrapatis who had direct descent from Avatar Bhagwan Shri Rama of Ayodhya, this also represented their divine bloodline. Even the smallest Imperial War bands of the Maratha army carried this into battle along with the Bhagwa Jhanda and Zari Pataka (Alam) striking terror in hearts of villains.
Royal Maratha Elephant Ride Painting by Ram Deshmukh
Imperial Maratha Elephant Ride by Emperor Chattrapati Shivaji Shahaji Bhonsale Maharaja on Raigad Painting by Ram Deshmukh. Dr. John Fryer was a European who travelled to Maharashtra during the reign of Shivaji the Great. Though Dr. Fryer was an adherent of Bijapur State, he confirms Marathas had a MORE visually splendid, glamourous army than Mughals! His own words: "Whereupon it is clear, the Deccanees are a warlike and troublesome nation, apt to dislike Government, proud and brave, having an army more splendid than the Moguls, adorning their elephants, horses, and lances with silver bells and feathers, gallant and rich in apparel." Painting by Ram Deshmukh

Painting of Maratha Emperor Chattrapati Sambhaji Shivaji Bhonsale Maharaja
Painting of Dharamveer Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja - Rarest Painting kept at Salar Jung Museum of Hyderabad. As a testament to the jewels hidden in Indian museums, a very rare Painting was brought to light by The Deccan image connoisseurs. The valiant Maratha Emperor in a new outfit. Albeit labeled as Maratha Emperor Shivaji the Great instead, on comparison, it is clearly an alternate version of an old painting of his son Chattrapati Sambhaji Shivaji Bhonsale Maharaj. Anyways whether Maratha Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja or Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja, it is still a welcome addition to the public depictions of either of the legendary Hindu rulers.

Mahratta of the Deccan
The Maratha Empire was a power that dominated a large portion of the Indian subcontinent in the 18th century. The empire formally existed from 1674 with the coronation of Shivaji as the Chhatrapati and ended in 1818 with the defeat of Peshwa Bajirao II at the hands of the British East India Company. The Marathas are credited to a large extent for annexing many territories of the Mughal Empire. The taken from my copy of THE IMPERIAL DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (1898)
