Teaching Reading Genres: From Setting up a Classroom Library to Independent Genre Activities
This teaching blog post describes how to teach genres in an elementary classroom. It is helpful for a reading teacher or classroom teacher in teaching the elements of genres such as nonfiction, fiction, mystery, fantasy, fables, informational text, and more. It includes genre activities, genre anchor charts, genre posters, genre classroom library labels, genre graphic organizers, independent reading ideas, genre reading centers for guided reading, and more!
In the Reading Across Genres unit, I created a large template where students could share what characteristics make up each genre using the texts read in class. After we read a certain genre, the students could add to the poster by placing a Post-It of a genre characteristic. (For example, one of the students wrote, "Talking animals" under "Fable".)
