It's fair to say the primary purpose of our brain is to inform movement. The more dynamically we move, the more alive we are, and the more adaptive and capable our body and brain can be. From regulating hormones and neurotransmitters, to increasing neurogenesis and positively modulating genetic expression, there is no substitute for the the physiologic and cognitive benefits associated with exercise.

When you exercise, you provide a low-dose jolt to the brain’s reward centers—the system of the brain that helps you anticipate pleasure, feel motivated, and maintain hope. Over time, regular exercise remodels the reward system, leading to higher circulating levels of dopamine and more available dopamine receptors. In this way, exercise can both relieve depression and expand your capacity for joy.
