My Oasis

Finally, four years after adding on the bedroom space, I'm getting around to deciding how to decorate it. I've always known that it would be inspired by our 20th Anniversary vacation to Key West, but I didn't want it to be a caricature or something that looks like it belongs in a 500-room hotel where all the rooms look the same. After lots of looking at images of tropical resort spas for inspiration, this is what I've come up with.

Rethinking the paint colors .... still using the wallpaper on one accent wall, perhaps picking up the beige in the wallpaper and drapes, and adding this chaise in front of the bed. I've always wanted a chaise lounge.

Key West Florida Giclee Print In the bath, I don't mind being a little more kitschy. This poster (and the next) could have been mounted on wood and ready to hang, but I'll be mounting them myself onto canvas to complete the look. Savings: about 150 on the pair, plus another 30 or so on the shipping.

INNUENDO SEAMIST The pattern of the wallpaper and the valance fabric have so much happening that I wanted drapes that would give my eye some rest. But they also had to be strong enough to hold their own. Not a Thibaut fabric, this one comes from Calico Corners and costs less than 1/2 the price of something from Thibaut. I caught a sale, saving another 25% on materials and 15% on labor. One simple, stationary rod pocket panels will hang straight on each window on either side of the bed.

The modern-day way to clip pictures and keep myself from being overwhelmed. I use a PowerPoint slide to capture all the ideas that I'm thinking about.... In this case, thw window treatments for the bedroom. I like PP since I can fit about 8 - 10 images on one slide. That's just about as many as I can handle, but it's enough that I can make some clear decisions on what I like. For example, I decided I really like the top left style ... a fairly simple valance over a panel drape.

I don't have fancy designer mock-up software, so this is my Microsoft Office work around. I copy the patterns that I'm thinking about and paste them onto a PowerPoint slide in about the right proportions. I use this to ensure the scale of the pieces are right and to make sure the overall feel is what I'm hoping for. And it is. The big brown block in the center represents the dark wood bed. It's close enough for me to make a decision.

Thibaut Cypress - Haleema - Fabric - Aqua and Beige I'm not fond of matchy-matchy patterns or designs. The scale of this fabric (18" H and V repeats) complements the large scale of the wallpaper (27" x 27" repeat), and the strong use of the beige makes the Orissa wallpaper seem even more interesting.

Thibaut Cypress - Orissa - Wallpaper - Aqua ... A close up of the paper. Love, love the movement in the pattern combined with the cool and calming aqua color. The deepest color is a chocolate brown that will tie together perfectly with the deep brown furniture in the room.

Thibaut Cypress - Orissa I fell in love with this print. It's gorgeous, and just the feel that I'm looking for. It becomes the center that all design decisions are made around. This room setting convinces me, however, that the overall feeling is too light for what I want... especially with the dark wood furniture (bed, large scale armoire, and tall chest) in the room. I need to darken it up a bit. And that's where it gets fun!

This is the glass mosaic tile that covers the sink counters and the surface around the tub. It's a customized mix from www.Hakatai.com, which I blended until I got just right. The sand-colored tiles cover the side of the tub platform as well as the floor (in mixed sizes.)
