Speakers

Jay Carney
White House Press Secretary
CSPAN 06/11/2013
Carney: Well I'm not sure which statement you’re talking about. Reporter: The statement I was referring to in the March hearing where he was asked specifically whether all, I have the direct language, “Does the U.S. collects any type of data of all of the millions of Americans,” and he said the answer to that was “No” and he sort of amended it but in the conversation with Andrea Mitchell this weekend he said it was the “least untruthful answer” he could have given. Carney: Well, I think Director Clapper has in the last week, has demonstrated and has been aggressive in providing as much information as possible to the American people, to the press about these very sensitive and very important programs that are authorized by Congress under section 702 and section 215 of the Patriot Act, a public statute. A much debated public statute that has been passed into law and re-authorized I believe three times by Congress with bipartisan majorities. And I would point you to the statements

Carney continued: by Congress with bipartisan majorities. And I would point you to the statements and documents that have been put out by the ODNI that demonstrate the effort that he has undertaken to provide significant amount of information on these programs given the revelations that we have seen.
Russell Tice
Whistleblower and former NSA analyst
MSNBCW 06/11/2013
Tice: I learned the hard way, you cannot trust any of the internal supposed mechanisms that are there for oversight. The chain of command, the I.G.'s office, even at the D.O.D. I.G. I found was basically trying to put a knife in my back. The whistleblower protection act does not apply to the intelligence community. They're exempt from it. Most people in the intelligence community, they don't realize that. So you can't even go to the office of special counsel because they're exempt from that, too, and the merit system protection board. So even if you use the intelligence community whistleblower protection act, the only thing that gives you is the right to go to congress. It doesn't have any teeth there to protect you against retribution from the agency that you're reporting abuse on.
Loretta Sanchez
Representative, Member of Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security - Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence
CSPAN 06/12/2013
I have to let you know that there has to be a monumental change, this process of the intelligence community verses what the Congress knows as overseers of the programs, as representatives of America's people, not only to see policy but to see the money involved with this
Loretta Sanchez
Representative, Member of Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security - Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence
CSPAN 06/12/2013
I think of America and I think of all the Amendments, all of our protections. I particularly think of Amendment 4, which says no one is going to be eavesdropping on me. We have laws right now that say they can
Loretta Sanchez
Representative, Member of Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security - Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence
CSPAN 06/12/2013
Maybe we need a committee that begins to take a look at just what is the limit of liberty on an individual versus the security and collective good of the whole. I think it is a real dialogue we should have.

What we learned in there is significantly more than what is out in the media today. I cannot speak to what we learned in there. And I don’t know if there are other leaks, if there is more information out there somewhere, if someone else is going to step up. But I will tell you that I believe it is just the tip of the iceberg. But again, all of these things were legal.
Edward Snowden
whistleblower

Part 2 of 2 …”to take the risks necessary to stand up and fight to change things, to force their representatives to actually take a stand in their interests. And the months ahead, the years ahead, it’s only going to get worse, until eventually there will be a time where policies will change, because the only thing that restricts the activities of the surveillance state are policy.”
Tim Huelskamp
U.S. Representative R-Kansas
FOXNEWSW 06/12/2013
Wyden: Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on a million or hundreds of millions of Americans? Clapper: No, sir. Wyden: It does not? Clapper: Not wittingly. There are cases where they could inadvertently perhaps collect, but not wittingly. Hannity: now, before I get to his clarification, was that a lie, congressman Huelskamp, in light of all we know at this moment? Huelskamp: It sure looks and sounds like a lie, Sean. What was astounding in a classified briefing say, hey, I had to tell you a lie. And the people deserve to know. We did not have to sacrifice our individual liberties for security. It's difficult job to do. But Nixon’s Attorney General and his Chief of Staff were convicted of lying to Congress and I think Clapper’s done the same thing here.
Keith Alexander
General, Director of the National Security Agency, Chief of the Central Security Service and Commander of the United States Cyber Command.
CSPAN 06/13/2013
This is not a program where we are out freewheeling it. It is a well-overseen and very focused program. What we owe you, the American people, is now how good is that, with some statistics. I think when the American people hear that, they are going to stop and say -- wait. The information we're getting is incorrect. So I would just tell the American people that let's take a step back and look at what’s going on, the oversight and compliance (and then have this discussion.)
