Work Text:

Luz chewed at the end of her pen. In front of her way a notebook of several locations she needed to check out with Vee for any signs of magic activity. Only problem is, to make this list costed her a week’s worth of sleep. From telling hoax from fake and dating back articles as far back as she could took up a lot of her time.

Her sleep issue didn’t go unnoticed, however the girl was stubborn and it couldn’t take 3 people holding her down to get her to rest. The group knows this from first hand experience.

Camila had decided to take the young witchlings with her to run some errands, offering Luz to come with only for her to (unsurprisingly) turn it down. Leaving Luz home alone with no one but her friend’s palismen. Off the staff and free to roam.

Ghost stared at Luz from the arm of the couch the human was seated on. The cat’s ears flicked back in worry and she looked away for a moment. Shortly after she jumped down and joined the other palismen in their antics.

Clover, Flapjack, and Emmiline were playing a card game, all with adorably small visors for their heads while they played. Each of them setting down a card in the middle that coincided with the card’s color or number. Ghost remembered Amity referring to it as “One”.

The cat sat down in between Emmiline and Flapjack and looked back at the human. Although the human wasn’t her owner, she was still close with her and had grown a connection with her through Amity. So to see her, tired and frustrated at the world and herself, made the feline wish there was more she could do.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Flapjack chirping ceremoniously as he placed his last card down. Emmiline threw down her deck in frustration as Clover clapped her little tarsus’s together to congratulate the cardinal.

The palismen perked and turned their heads as they heard Luz give a groan of frustration and throw the notebook on to the coffee table in front of her.

“It’s hopeless!” She cried, throwing her head back and placing her hands over her eyes, “I only found 5 places with magic activity. 5 isn’t a good enough number! It’s not good enough to get everyone back home, it’s not good enough to ensure we have some hope, nothing I do is ever good enough!”

Now home alone, the human openly vented her frustrations. She eventually leaned forward and hugged herself, pulling her worn varsity jacket closer to herself.

This concerned all the palismen now. Luz was their owners’ friend, and they knew she couldn’t have done anything else. Ghost pawed at the ground, trying to think of what to do. That was until Flapjack chimed in with the announcement of their own idea.

Huddled around the Cardinal, they gave their idea, and Ghost couldn’t have been more on board. Hopping back onto the couch she approached the human daintily before rubbing her cheek against Luz’s arm.

Luz perked up and looked down at Ghost, sniffling, “Oh, hey Ghost.” She reached down and petted the cat’s cheek gently, a small smile coming to her face as the feline purred in response to the affection.

Emmiline joined next. Crawling from the back of the couch on to Luz’s shoulder, nuzzling her cheek as Ghost cuddled closer.

“Woah- you both are pretty cuddly today Huh?” Luz couldn’t help but let out a little laugh as she began petting both Palismen.

Soon Flapjack and Clover joined the others, Flapjack nestling in one of Luz’s jacket pockets and Clover nuzzling her other cheek.

The human let out a strained laugh, and before she knew it, the laugh became genuine at the onslaught of affection the small wooden buddies gave to her.

Luz felt herself be over taken as the laughter caused her to fall back, her head landing on a pillow perched on the arm of the couch. The palismen took this opportunity to all rest themselves on her chest, Ghost and Flapjack nestling themselves near her face.

“Ok ok ok, I get it. You little guys want me to rest. I appreciate the sentiment but I really have to-“ Luz was interrupted by Ghost placing her little cat paw on Luz’s cheek. The molly narrowed her eyes before curling up in the small spot between Luz’s face and the couch cushion. “Alright….hint taken. I guess a few minutes of resting won’t hurt..”

Suddenly then, as the four palismen snored softly in their rest, Luz felt her eyes grow heavy. Like she said, a few minutes won’t hurt

“Luz! Nosotros estamos en casa.” Camila called out, entering the house with a line of witchlings, grimwalker, and basilisk behind her, each carrying a paper bag of items they picked up from the store.

Gus looked around and then at the couch Luz was on when they left, placing his bag down on the table in the kitchen and returning her peered over and beamed at what he saw.

“Guys, come quick.” Gus called to them in a half whisper.

The others looked over the couch with Gus and each let out a collective awe at the sight before them. There Luz was, happily curled up with the Palismen sleeping around (and on) her. Luz looked passed out, likely sleeping harder than she ever had over the past week.

Grabbing a blanket and placing it over her daughter, Camila have a hush to the other teens to not wake her up. However she doubted if anything would wake up her daughter at this point. The group scurried into the kitchen to put away their items as Luz let out a small smile in her sleep. Snuggling closer to the palismen asleep around her.
