“Come on, girls, we should be getting close!”
In the deep forests of the Boiling Isles, a trio of girls ventured as deep as they could; two of them, a girl with brown hair and golden eyes and a redhead with three eyes, followed the third girl, a dark-skinned girl with gray hair, as she bolted ahead, looking positively excited as she did.
“Skara, hold on!” the brunette called. “Are you sure we’re even going the right direction!”
“Yeah, how do you even know there really is a staff here?!” the redheaded triclops snapped. “It could just be a scam for all we know!”
“No, it’s gotta be true!” the dark-skinned girl, Skara, stated, pausing her mad dash to face the other two girls. “My caretaker used to talk about that legend all the time, and with the sudden arrival of those Azura books, it all connects!”
“Skara, listen,” the brunette said as she walked forward. “I like those books as much as the next guy-”
“But nobody else likes those books,” the triclops pointed out.
“-But just because a legend we’ve heard is similar to something in a book doesn’t mean that it definitely means it’s real,” the brunette continued, paying the triclops no attention. “We’ve already been out for way too long, our parents are gonna get worried. Let’s go back-”
“No, it’s gotta be true!” Skara snapped. “Come on, we gotta be getting close!”
Skara grabbed the brunette’s hand, but she gently slapped it away.
“Enough, Skara. Come on, we’re leaving.”
The brunette turned around and began to walk away, eventually stopping when she walked past the triclops, who stood still.
“I said, we’re leaving, Boscha.”
The triclops folded her arms. “I don’t take orders from you, Scamity.”
The brunette immediately turned to the redhead. “What did you call me?!”
“Scamity!”
And as the duo began having an argument, like usual, Skara turned back to continue her trek through the woods… until she spotted a glowing light in the distance, one that became more alluring the longer she stared at it.
So, she followed along and approached the glow, going past some bushes as the duo’s argument became more heated, and eventually…
“I FOUND IT!”
Boscha and Scamity’s argument was brought to a halt when they heard Skara’s shout, and they ran into the bushes where she went, where they found the girl jumping up and down while standing next to a peculiar item lodged on the ground.
It was a white staff that was topped with some blue, egg-like object, which floated above the staff with no assistance.
“It’s here, it’s here, it’s here!” Skara chirped while clapping her hands. “The staff of Azura the Good Witch really is here!”
“Well, color me surprised, it actually is here,” Boscha said as she took a closer look at the staff. “Though it’s a little different than I remember from those images Scamity shoved at my face; since when does the egg float?”
“I’m still not convinced,” Scamity remarked. “I mean, sure, it definitely looks a lot like the staff we’ve seen before, but how do we know it’s not just some random staff that someone left here to scam people?”
“Only one way to know!”
Skara rubbed her hands together and reached for the staff, grabbing its snow white body before pulling as hard as she could… with the staff being removed from the ground a few seconds afterwards, causing Skara to drop straight to the ground.
“Huh… that went much more smoothly than I expected-”
“Aha! I knew it was a scam!” Scamity exclaimed proudly. “Everyone knows that the real staff wouldn’t be removed so easily! Only the chosen one would be able to remove it, no problem!”
Boscha smirked. “Oh, now you care about this?”
“Of course I do; it’s the perfect chance to call you out over believing some random destiny-”
Suddenly, the staff glowed and began to float up, the three girls watching as a golden light enveloped the staff, with the light slowly separating from it as it grew bigger and bigger.
“-Rubbish?”
Once the light was big enough, it morphed into the visage of a woman with long flowing green hair, who opened her eyes and looked down at the trio as Skara squeed.
“Greetings, children of the isles,” the figure spoke with an echoing voice. “Who was the one who removed my staff?”
“Me me me!” Skara chirped while raising and waving her hand wildly.
The figure lowered the staff down to Skara’s hands, the grayette grabbing the object as the figure spoke:
“Then the time has finally come. After centuries without a proper wielder, the Boiling Isles will have a protector once more.”
“Wait a minute, you’re just gonna give her the staff like that?!” Scamity asked in disbelief. “No test of character? No asking if she even wants this or not?!”
“If you came all the way over here, you must’ve come wanting to obtain my staff, meaning you would’ve had to know and accept the potential outcome of this search,” the figure pointed out. “
Scamity took a step back, then turned to Skara, putting a hand on her shoulder as the girl looked at the staff with wide eyes.
“Skara, it’s not too late. You don’t have to accept such a big burden when you’re still so young; maybe just leave it here for now and come back to it when you’ve given it more thought?”
“Last time I checked, you told us you didn’t care about us at the tea party,” Boscha pointed out, shooting a stern glare at the brunette. “Why are you showing concern now?”
“Just because I don’t like you or this arrangement between us doesn’t mean like I’ll let you ruin your lives because one random witch decided to leave her power behind so someone else would take up her job!” Scamity snapped before turning to the figure. “No offense.”
“I’m still awaiting an answer, Skara Whispers,” the figure pointed out, completely ignoring Scamity’s words. “Do you accept the job? Or will you give it some more thought, like your fellow witch here suggests?”
Skara gripped the staff, and with a look of pure determination, she looked back at the figure and stated:
“I’ll take it!”
Then, she spun the staff and put it down before raising an excited fist.
“I will become the protector that the Boiling Isles needs!”
Boscha flashed a thumbs up while Scamity facepalmed, with the duo watching as the figure
“Then from this moment forward, your job is to protect the Boiling Isles with all your power. To defend the weak and repel the evils from other worlds, to ensure they don’t destroy what remains of my mate, the Titan of Time and Space.”
“Wait,” Scamity flinched. “What was that about a mate?”
“To protect my descendants, the ones collectively known as Witchkind.”
“Hold it, what’s this about us being your descendants?!” Boscha gasped.
The figure reached a hand towards Skara, poking her forehead as Skara closed her eyes. Shortly after, a white light engulfed the girl, the light glowing as the figure said:
“Rise into a level above all witchkind.”
Once the light finished, it dissipated, revealing that Skara’s hair had only only turned two different shades of green, but her clothes had gone from red to white in color.
"Skara the Good Witch."
