Chapter 1: Samuel

Chapter Text

All Samuel had ever wanted was stability. A steady job, the same bed to sleep in every night. God wouldn’t that be nice. The same bed to go home to every night. But no, how could he be that fortunate. Here he was, lying in the backseat of his car with nothing but a speaker and a thin blanket. I guess he should be grateful, most people don’t even have a blanket. Or a car. He turned over (as much as he could due to the small amount of room in the backseat) to look at the speaker. The small diaphragm was vibrating slightly as the white noise that poured out of it played. Samuel could feel his eyes starting to get heavy as the outside world began to fade away. Right before he was completely absorbed into the wonderful realm of sleep, a knock startled him awake. His eyes burst open as he sat completely upright, hitting his head on the window on his way up. He winced in pain as his hand flew to the small switchblade that was stored in the pocket behind the seat before looking out the window. His outstretched his arm towards the window that had made the noise, the blade glinting in the moonlight that poured in through the windshield. He let out a small sigh of relief when he saw who his potential attacker was.
“God Dior, you need to stop sneaking up on me like that…” he grumbled as he rolled down the window and rubbed the part of his head that got hit.
“How else am I supposed to get your attention? Shout your name and let people know you’re here?” She answered sarcastically. “Put the switchblade down and let me in. I have a delivery.”
Samuel unlocked the car door and dior slid into the driver seat. Her tight sparkly pink dress hidden beneath a worn brown leather jacket. She had a paper bag which she quickly opened and started rummaging around inside.
“Found it! You are going to be so happy, Samuel you have no idea!” Samuel would usually be excited about his sisters proposition, but he seriously was not in the mood for whatever Dior had in store for him. It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate her small gifts, but sometimes it was hard to match her energy. It confused him how she could be so energetic at all hours of the day, sometimes it even confused him how they were related at all.
Dior pulled a small trinket out of the bag and handed it to Samuel. He took it and turned it over in his hands a few times. It was a fairly large dragon figurine, it was painted blue and had sparkles of glitter all over. Even though it was only around 5 inches long, it certainly had some weight to it and could not have been cheap.
“God, Dior, how did you get this?” He questioned, not looking up from the trinket.
“Stole it, how else? It’s from the lobby of that place where I had to audition at. The second the receptionist looked away I took it from the desk.” She said nonchalantly, as if they were discussing the weather. She had a makeup wipe in one hand, a mirror in the other as she furiously scrubbed at the eyeshadow that coated her eyelids.
“You need to stop doing that! One of these days you’re gonna get caught, and I don’t have the time or money to get you out of jail!” Samuel snapped. “If you’re going to steal, at least take something useful.”
This was starting to become a problem. He didn’t know what was going on, but Dior had to stop this. He didn’t even know why! The only thing he could come up with was that it gave her some kind of thrill, stealing from people. He wouldn’t be so mad if she was stealing something they needed, like food, but the small trinkets and jewelry she brought home every once in a while were getting on his nerves.
“How did the audition go anyway?” He said, trying to change the subject.
“It went perfectly! I think this might be my big break Sammy, really. And trust me, if I get a call back, I will return the dragon.” Dior said dismissively, waving her hand vaguely.
Samuel rolled his eyes at the proposal, He was too tired to care about the nickname she had just called him, so he put the dragon down in the cup holder and began to lay down again.
“I’m serious Sammy! One of these days I’m gonna make it big, and we can buy a house, and we won’t have to sleep in our car, and I’m gonna be so famous you could have a swimming pool full of cash alone!” She said angrily before throwing out the makeup wipe and putting the mirror back in the glovebox.
“We need to go to bed, we’re driving to Solterro in the morning and it’s a long drive.” He heard the driver seat recline and Dior lay down with a huff.
“Seriously I don’t know why you’re so obsessed with this whole militia thing Samuel. Just get a normal job like the rest of us” she said under her breath. Samuel pretended to not hear her. He would join the militia no matter what she said, and no one would stop him.
Finally she was going to bed at a reasonable hour, he thought. Maybe he would actually get some sleep tonight. Samuel felt his eyelids start to get heavy again as he pulled the blanket closer to his face. He had to curl his legs in to keep his whole body covered, he was getting to tall for this child’s blanket. He would add that to his to do list tomorrow, all he wanted to do was sleep for now. He felt his worries start to drift away as his eyes closed; he then drifted into a dreamless sleep, switchblade still in his right hand.
