Chapter Text

A lot has changed in five years. Roman and Logan finally moved in together that summer after school ended. Roman's first drama class graduated middle school( Roman cried). Roman and Logan got engaged( Logan cried). Roman had gotten back into full-time teaching, now knowing how to manage his time better. He wouldn't have changed any of the stuff that had happened. He was finally feeling like he was doing things correctly in life.

That was until the letter arrived.

Despite running the drama club and class, Roman hadn't returned to the stage since the accident. Even though he had been given the go-ahead from multiple doctors, he never did. He still walked with a slight limp even though his legs were fully healed. He just stuck to watching from behind the scenes. Directing was where he wanted to be anyway.

That was a lie.

Everyone who knew him, knew that was a lie, but they couldn't convince Roman to get back on that stage, even though a small part of him craved that spotlight once more.

"Roman, you got something in the mail," His fiancé called one shining August afternoon, standing on their back porch with a bright white letter in his hand. Roman raised an eyebrow, looking up from his phone and setting down the bottle of beer in his hand.

" How mysterious," Remus teased, and Roman rolled his eyes, limping over to Logan, who handed him a letter.

Roman frowned, his heart skipping a beat when he saw it from one of the state's touring theatre.

" Who's it from?" Janus asks, frowning more when Roman holds up his finger and opens the letter, his hands slightly trembling.

" Dear?" Logan asks, noticing the shake of Roman's hand.

" Is mom okay?" Remus asks, immediately assuming the worst once he notices the shift in Roman's demeanor.

" She's fine," Roman says, not looking up from the letter. The group was reaching out to him because they needed actors for a showing of Into the Woods, which was just starting to cast. Roman had been recommended by one of his old directors, who had spoken high praise of him. They were sending out audition information.

Roman felt his heart leap into his throat. That was an insane opportunity that would get him closer to Broadway than he'd ever thought he would. Not to mention a tour of a Sondheim show would look wonderful on his show resume.

But then there was that part of him that flashed the pain he felt after his injury in Cabaret; no matter how self-inflicted those had been, they held him back.

" Who's it from?" Logan asks, his grey eyes studying Roman's face, searching for any emotion that would tell him what was happening.

" It's from work. It's fine," Roman lies, folding up the letter and setting it down on the porch railing before grabbing the half-empty beer bottle.

" Are you sure?" Remus pried, as Roman wrapped his arm around Logan's waist, trying to think of anything but that letter.

"Yes, it's just orientation stuff. I've done it so many times, so the letter doesn't really matter,"

That's right the letter didn't matter. This was his home, he had his fiancé, family, and his job and that was all he needed. He didn't need to go back.

But oh, how he wanted to.

------

Roman went to bed early that night, well he didn't really go to bed. He just lay in his bed, staring up at the ceiling, his body feeling a storm of emotions he didn't know how to get through at the moment.

Logan came back into the bedroom shortly after Remus and Janus had left, knocking on the door frame before turning on their bedroom light.

" I know you are awake," Logan says, and Roman turns on his side, flipping back over when he sees Logan holding up the letter.

"Are we gonna talk about this or no" Logan asks his fiancé. Roman sits up and shrugs, leaning back against the headboard of his bed.

"There isn't anything to talk about," Roman says with a simple shrug, fiddling with his engagement band.

" That's a lie," Logan says, sitting next to him opening the letter.

"Because I know for certain that the school board isn't sending out auditioning information to the guy who runs the auditions in the first place," Logan says, and Roman shakes his head.

"I'm not going," he says, and Logan frowns

"Roman this is huge. The fact they are interested in you means-"

"I know exactly what it means, Lo. I'm not going," Roman says, running a hand through his hair.

"Why? You love the stage,"

"Because I have to leave my job and my home behind. Not to mention what if I have to leave you here as well?"

"You'd come back after the tour was done. We'd figure something out. I'd come with you or something," he said, and Roman shook his head.

"Lo, these tours can last years. That position won't be available if I go for this. I love my job,"

"But I think you love the stage more," Logan says and Roman paused.

He hates the fact that Logan was right. He wanted this so badly.

"Why don't you want to go, besides leaving. What's stopping you," he asks, taking Roman's hand in his own.

Roman shook his head, pulling his hand away, curling up.

"Honey talk to me please,"

"I don't want to talk about this right now, please," he says as Logan frowns, taking off his glasses. He wasn't going to push it.

"Okay, I'll respect that," Logan says, sighing softly before lying down. The silence felt heavy between them.

Roman moved his hand, resting it on top of Logan's, squeezing it a bit.

"I'll figure it out," he whispered, smiling when Logan squeezed back.

"I know you will,"
