Chapter Text
“Did you hear? There’s this pandemic thing going around.” Maria whispers to Marcy.
“It’s literally about to be April Fools, how are you gonna believe things being spread on April Fools?” Marcy responds, not believing a word of it. They like to confirm news instead of believing it blindly.
“But this sounds serious, it may not be a--”
“Is there something you two would like to share with the class?” Ms. Davies interrupts.
“No ma’am...” Marcy answers.
The lesson continued and Marcy’s mind wandered back to the potential pandemic, curious of how much truth there is to it and its origin. Luckily, Ms. Davies’s class, history, was the last period of the day.
When the bell rang, Marcy pulled out their phone to google about the virus, when they were suddenly shoved into a wall. The person who did it didn’t seem to be paying attention to their surroundings, so it was probably an accident. There was something else that Marcy noticed, the wall they got shoved into, where their face hit. It was soft and bumpy. It had some type of mold? It had mushroom-looking things growing out of it, weird. The school was never that hygienic, anyway. With all the bathroom flooding and milk being thrown in hallways, mold is expected.
At their house, they put their bag away and headed to their room, laying flat on their back whilst lying down in their bed. Marcy finally remembered about the whole pandemic thing and pulled out their phone, clicking Chrome and searching for any news articles that covered this. An awful lot has. A New Fungi, Possibly a Virus, Stay Indoors! This New Fungi Spreads Concern--wait, fungi? Marcy swears that they touched some type of fungi, very weird looking. They look at the Images section for similarities. If they remember correctly, it looked exactly as how it does in those images. How does the virus spread? They searched. Right now, these fungi seem to grow by touching a somewhat wet surface. It needs little water to thrive.
Shoot.
Maybe they’re in the clear, who knows?
How do I get rid of the fungi virus thing? They search. The roots engrave themselves deep into the skin. You’ll have to cut off the infected parts.
Just great.
I’ll just sleep it off. They decide.
When they woke up, they felt something was on their face. It was weird.
They got up to walk to the bathroom.
Their house was quiet today and will be for a while. His parents are out traveling and his sister is the only one home, and she has a job on weekends in the morning. Today was Saturday and the time when their sister was working.
When they arrived at the bathroom across the hallway, they looked in the mirror, taking in their reflection.
They stared, dumbfounded. The same fungi growing on the walls in the school were on their face. They suddenly remembered their search for the new pandemic and looked at the images. Right. They bumped into the wall with the fungi. How does one get rid of the fungi? Cutting it off? That would hurt. They chose to wait until their sister came home. She’ll know what to do; she’s training to be a nurse anyway.
Hours passed, still no sister.
I guess I'll just have to take matters into my own hands.
They walk into the kitchen. If the fungus was rooting in their skin, they'll have to cut it out.
They take a deep breath, prepping before the action.
