Unable to become pregnant and produce milk, Maddie was used as a blood “donor” at U.C. Davis. When she became intolerant to the needles and poking after 8 long years, she was deemed useless and slated for slaughter. Thanks to a veterinarian’s intervention, Maddie has been free from harm, fear, and exploitation at Animal Place for 5½ years now.
Shelby and Magnolia are so easy to love! Let’s create a world where no one would ever think of eating them.
One of the greatest joys we have is sharing the beauty and wonder of the rescued residents. Magnolia is a survivor of the dairy industry. She loves back scratches and hugs. Her best friend is Shelby, but she has opened her heart to us humans, too. We live in a world that seems, at times, to be full of so much misery and suffering. How beautiful is it that each of us can reject much of that suffering by making kinder food choices?
Tired of being in front of the camera, Shelby offers to take some photos and let education director, Marji, take a break. Magnolia continues snacking.
Animals used by humans for food are not voiceless. Too often, though, we fail to hear their cries. We allow them to be silenced, their pain to be hidden from us. People spoke up for Shelby, the once emaciated darling who greets guests at Animal Place. Let’s follow their lead and unabashedly speak up for those whose voices often go ignored.
Shelby and Magnolia greet guests with cuteness as they enter the sanctuary. They take their job seriously.
Shelby and Magnolia Calves Say Hi!
When you're a calf and you want to say hi to a human friend, you gotta be a little dramatic. https://youtu.be/RHKlmqvTJFQ
Mr. Panda is definitely one of our more soulful residents. (Not to be confused with Panda Bob, who is one of our more adorably obnoxious residents.)
Hannah likes to teach Mort by example. And you think it’s hard getting your kids to eat their greens.

Throwback Thursday: Linus
Throwback Thursday: Look at this little bovine beauty! This is the day we picked Linus up from Santa Cruz County Animal Services after he and four other male calves (including Douglas) were rescued. They were unwanted dairy calves, being raised for slaughter. He turns 2 this month!!
