Jamie Young - Natural Dye Educator on Instagram: "The key to flower prints that withstand wash & wear is mordanting & plant choice. 🗝️✨ 👉🏼✨Comment PRINT & I’ll send you a ✨free✨ tutorial where I share exactly how to create stunning prints with flowers. 🌼 Mordanting is a pretreatment process where the fabric, that will be dyed, is soaked in particular mineral salts. The mordants bind onto the fiber - creating a chemical complex - then, when exposed to natural dyes, they create insoluble bonds with the dyes - essentially fixing them into the fabric. Choosing flowers that contain dye constituents with higher levels of colorfastness is also important for creating prints that maintain their vibrancy. It’s a nuanced process that involves a lot of thought and patience. It takes practice to figure out how to get fantastic prints. 👉🏼 That’s why I’m sharing some of my favorite tips with you today! 🩵 Eco printing is a natural dye method that uses pressure and heat to directly transfer the image of a plant onto a substrate. 🌿 The plants are arranged on barriers & fabric that has been pretreated with mineral salt mordants. The fabric and plants then rolled, bundled, and steamed together to transfer the dye from within the plants to the fabric.
