Gastric cancer ranks first among the cancers in the north-eastern Anatolia region, Turkey, where iodine deficiency is common. In this study, iodine levels were determined in gastric cancer and surrounding normal tissues in 19 patients with gastric cancer. Tissue iodine levels were determined by the Foss method based on the Sandell-Kolt-hoff reaction. Tissue iodine levels were lower in gastric cancer tissue (17.8±3.4ngI/mg protein, mean±SEM) compared with surrounding normal tissue (41.7±8.0ngI/mg protein) (p<0.001). There was positive correlation between the iodine levels in gastric cancer tissue and surrounding normal tissue (r=0.845, p<0.001). There was no significant difference in iodine levels in cancer and surrounding normal tissue between male and female subjects. There were eight rats per group and supplementation period was 3 weeks. The groups were: nicotine [0.5 mg kg(-1)day(-1), intraperitoneal (i.p.)]; nicotine plus vitamin E [75 mg kg(-1)day(-1), intragastric (i.g.)]; nicotine plus HRe-1 (250 mg kg(-1)day(-1), i.g.); and the control group (receiving only vehicles). Nicotine increased the malondialdehyde level, which was prevented by both vitamin E and HRe-1. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in nicotine plus vitamin E supplemented group was higher than the others. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in nicotine plus HRe-1 supplemented group was increased compared with the control group. Catalase activity was higher in nicotine group compared with others. GPx activity in nicotine plus vitamin E supplemented group was elevated compared with the others. Total and non-enzymatic superoxide scavenger activities in nicotine plus vitamin E supplemented group were lower than nicotine plus HRe-1 supplemented group. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was higher in nicotine plus HRe-1 supplemented group compared with others. Glutathione reductase activity and nitric oxide level were not affected. The effects of endurance training on gonadal fat pad and also on ventricle mass in rat were tested in this study. Eight week treadmill training increased the endurance time and distance run in trained rats compared with sedentary rats. Endurance training decreased the weight of the left gonadal fat pad and also proportional gonadal fat pad in rats. However, Lee index, weights of the ventricles, kidneys, and testicles were not affected. The decrease in gonadal fat pad by eight week treadmill training in rat, suggests that endurance training may affect the body composition in favor of other tissues than adipose tissue probably by increasing the consumption of fats rather than carbohydrates to provide energy. Lee index, which is an obesity index used in rodents, may not be sensitive enough to detect small alterations in body fat in rats reflected as decreased gonadal fat pad by training in our study. V...

Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were divided into trained and untrained groups, which were further divided into resting and acute exercise groups. Endurance training consisted of treadmill running for 8 weeks. For acute exhaustive exercise, graded treadmill running was conducted until exhaustion. However, it adversely decreased total glutathione level and glutathione peroxidase activity in kidney. Acute exhaustive exercise up-regulated glutathione peroxidase activity in liver. Endurance training did not prevent the increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances level in liver due to acute exhaustive exercise. Activities of glutathione disulfide reductase and glutathione S-transferase were not affected. Even though endurance training appeared to upregulate glutathione dependent antioxidant defense in skeletal muscle and to decrease lipid peroxidation in kidney and vastus lateralis muscle as measured by TBARS, our results suggests that beneficial effects of 8 weeks of endurance training are limited in this rat model of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study was to test whether endurance training can strengthen glutathione-dependent antioxidant defense mechanism and decrease lipid peroxidation in heart of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Redox status of glutathione in blood of diabetic rats in response to training and acute exercise was also examined. Eight weeks of treadmill training increased the endurance in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. It did not affect glutathione level in heart tissue at rest and also after exercise. Owing to the crucial role of MAOs in maintaining functional levels of neurotransmitters, the implications of its distorted activity have been associated with numerous neurological diseases. Recently, an unanticipated role of MAOs in tumor progression and metastasis has been reported. The chemical inhibition of MAOs might be a valuable therapeutic approach for cancer treatment. In this review, we reported computational approaches exploited in the design and development of selective MAO inhibitors accompanied by their biological activities. This study was conducted with 16 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and 16 healthy subjects. Serum malondialdehyde, blood 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase, serum total coenzyme Q10 and coenzyme Q10 levels were measured. Independent samples t test was used to analyse the differences between control group and patients, while paired t test was used to analyse the differences between pre‐operative and post‐operative periods. Malondialdehyde and total coenzyme Q10 levels were lower in patients, while 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine level was increased. However, superoxide dismutase activity and coenzyme Q10 levels did not differ. After 60 days of operation, 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine and superoxide dismutase activity decreased, while total coenzyme Q10 level increased. However, malondialdehyde and coenzyme Q10 levels were not affected. The international prostate symptom scores of the patients were also decreased after the operation. The results suggest that blood 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine level may reflect the oxidative stress better than the malondialdehyde level, and surgical operation attenuates the oxidative stress in late post‐operative period in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients.

We studied the effect of intragastric LA supplementation (150 mg/kg, 8 wk) on tissue LA levels, glutathione metabolism, and lipid peroxidation in rats at rest and after exhaustive treadmill exercise. LA supplementation increased the level of free LA in the red gastrocnemius muscle and increased total glutathione levels in the liver and blood. The exercise-induced decrease in heart glutathione S-transferase activity was prevented by LA supplementation. Exhaustive exercise significantly increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance levels in the liver and red gastrocnemius muscle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of oxytocin on cell viability in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line and primary cerebral cortex cell culture exposed to cisplatin and vincristine. In this direction, SH-SY5Y cell line and cortex neurons were obtained from the medical pharmacology department, Ataturk University. Both cells were grown in the appropriate cell culture media. Cisplatin (5, 10, 15 μg), vincristine (0.5, 1 and 2 ng) and oxytocin (1 μM) were applied to SH-SY5Y cell line and primary cortex cell culture for 24 h. MTT and TAC-TOS tests were performed 24 h after the application. It remains to be seen whether correlations found between disease activity score and serum malondialdehyde level, and also activities of serum superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes observed in the present study may be used to predict prognosis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

The effects of endurance training on gonadal fat pad and also on ventricle mass in rat were tested in this study. Eight week treadmill training increased the endurance time and distance run in trained rats compared with sedentary rats. Endurance training decreased the weight of the left gonadal fat pad and also proportional gonadal fat pad in rats. However, Lee index, weights of the ventricles, kidneys, and testicles were not affected. The decrease in gonadal fat pad by eight week treadmill training in rat, suggests that endurance training may affect the body composition in favor of other tissues than adipose tissue probably by increasing the consumption of fats rather than carbohydrates to provide energy. Lee index, which is an obesity index used in rodents, may not be sensitive enough to detect small alterations in body fat in rats reflected as decreased gonadal fat pad by training in our study. V...

Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were divided into trained and untrained groups, which were further divided into resting and acute exercise groups. Endurance training consisted of treadmill running for 8 weeks. For acute exhaustive exercise, graded treadmill running was conducted until exhaustion. However, it adversely decreased total glutathione level and glutathione peroxidase activity in kidney. Acute exhaustive exercise up-regulated glutathione peroxidase activity in liver. Endurance training did not prevent the increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances level in liver due to acute exhaustive exercise. Activities of glutathione disulfide reductase and glutathione S-transferase were not affected. Even though endurance training appeared to upregulate glutathione dependent antioxidant defense in skeletal muscle and to decrease lipid peroxidation in kidney and vastus lateralis muscle as measured by TBARS, our results suggests that beneficial effects of 8 weeks of endurance training are limited in this rat model of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study was to test whether endurance training can strengthen glutathione-dependent antioxidant defense mechanism and decrease lipid peroxidation in heart of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Redox status of glutathione in blood of diabetic rats in response to training and acute exercise was also examined. Owing to the crucial role of MAOs in maintaining functional levels of neurotransmitters, the implications of its distorted activity have been associated with numerous neurological diseases. Recently, an unanticipated role of MAOs in tumor progression and metastasis has been reported. The chemical inhibition of MAOs might be a valuable therapeutic approach for cancer treatment. In this review, we reported computational approaches exploited in the design and development of selective MAO inhibitors accompanied by their biological activities. The aim was to assess oxidative stress in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients and also to evalu... more The aim was to assess oxidative stress in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients and also to evaluate the effect of operation in late (60 days) post‐operative period. This study was conducted with 16 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and 16 healthy subjects. Serum malondialdehyde, blood 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase, serum total coenzyme Q10 and coenzyme Q10 levels were measured. Independent samples t test was used to analyse the differences between control group and patients, while paired t test was used to analyse the differences between pre‐operative and post‐operative periods. Malondialdehyde and total coenzyme Q10 levels were lower in patients, while 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine level was increased. However, superoxide dismutase activity and coenzyme Q10 levels did not differ. After 60 days of operation, 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine and superoxide dismutase activity decreased, while total coenzyme Q10 level increased. However, malondialdehyde and coenzyme Q10 levels were not affected. The international prostate symptom scores of the patients were also decreased after the operation. The results suggest that blood 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine level may reflect the oxidative stress better than the malondialdehyde level, and surgical operation attenuates the oxidative stress in late post‐operative period in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients.

We studied the effect of intragastric LA supplementation (150 mg/kg, 8 wk) on tissue LA levels, glutathione metabolism, and lipid peroxidation in rats at rest and after exhaustive treadmill exercise. LA supplementation increased the level of free LA in the red gastrocnemius muscle and increased total glutathione levels in the liver and blood. The exercise-induced decrease in heart glutathione S-transferase activity was prevented by LA supplementation. Exhaustive exercise significantly increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance levels in the liver and red gastrocnemius muscle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of oxytocin on cell viability in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line and primary cerebral cortex cell culture exposed to cisplatin and vincristine. In this direction, SH-SY5Y cell line and cortex neurons were obtained from the medical pharmacology department, Ataturk University. Both cells were grown in the appropriate cell culture media. Cisplatin (5, 10, 15 μg), vincristine (0.5, 1 and 2 ng) and oxytocin (1 μM) were applied to SH-SY5Y cell line and primary cortex cell culture for 24 h. MTT and TAC-TOS tests were performed 24 h after the application.
