Kuon is a horror game set in Heian period (12th century) in Japan. You control three protagonists in the game. The story revolves around a man named Doman, an exorcist who was summoned by one of the noblemen to investigate a cursed manor. His daughter Utsuki is out to search for him when he doesn't return, and her sister is charmed by demons inhabiting a mysterious castle, turning into a demon herself. A young girl named Sakuya, Doman's disciple, also ventures into the depths of the demonic world, to prove herself worthy of her master. Once the player completes Utsuki's and Sakuya's scenarios, they unlocks the third scenario where they experiences the story from the point of view of Doman himself. The game is a mixture of third-person action and puzzle-solving. As in all survival horror games, your means of defense are limited and scarce. Unlike most games of the kind, physical attacks with weapons are not your only way to defend yourself against hordes of undead creatures. You can also learn and cast spells in the game, and even summon creatures (wolves, spiders, etc.) to fight at your side.

Sometimes all a game really has is atmosphere and good presentation. That’s okay on it’s own, these aspects are top notch in this game (with the exception of some pretty lame jumpscares), but I was still left feeling let down by the disappointingly unengaging gameplay experience of Kuon. This feels exactly like a group of developers who were not confident enough in the player being able to make it through the game with the provided limited items, so they slapped on an overpowered infinite heal button and a melee weapon that kills everything to compensate. The gameplay is not scary or tense like it’s contemporaries- there is no worrying about surviving and thinking about resources in Kuon. You encounter something, you mash square until it dies and then hold R1 to heal up afterwards. It really does baffle me and pretty much defeat the reason I enjoy the survival horror genre so much.

All of this said though- put up with a pretty boring and repetitive gameplay experience for the two main campaigns for a few hours, and you will be rewarded with an epilogue that had me in awe and coming off the game quite a lot more positive than at those first few hours. It’s so impressive and shocking as a twist that it almost got me to forgive the middling experience otherwise- but really, I just think it’s an excellent ending for an overall messy video game.

Very solid horror game with refreshing setting and gameplay. Too bad it seems like they were not able to fully do what they wanted and the second half of the game is recycling of the first one. I'd love to see a remake or a modern game with similar atmosphere and game mechanics (casting spells, summons, different types of knives...but with a more complexe system than juste finding spell cards on the ground lol

one of the best horror game in terms of setting, visual style and gameplay on PS2
