The purpose of this study is not to retell the history of education in geographical Syria in the ... more The purpose of this study is not to retell the history of education in geographical Syria in the late Ottoman era before wwi, but to highlight the process that made it possible for an important group of Syrian Muslim intellectuals to change their perceptions, from professing an anti-missionary, anti-Western Arab cultural identity-as earlier studies have emphasized-to having a positive outlook toward Western schools. This shift occurred because they perceived that Western culture was a necessary means to modernize Arab cultural identity. Although this process started before the mid-19th century with the importation of translated books on modern secular subjects from Egypt in 1838, this study concentrates on the late 19th and early 20th century to sharpen perception of the process.

Studies towards the total synthesis of (+)-Phomactin A (1), D (6), and G (9), fungal metabolites ... more Studies towards the total synthesis of (+)-Phomactin A (1), D (6), and G (9), fungal metabolites with unique molecular architecture and pronounced biological activity, are described. These studies resulted in the synthesis of advanced intermediates 354 and 356, which contain all of the carbon atoms of 1, 6 and 9. A Horner-Wadsworth Emmons olefination of aldehyde 186 and β-keto ester 289 was utilized to construct enone 311. A novel Stryker conjugate reduction / aldol cyclization sequence provided alcohol 312, constituting the B ring of 1, 6 and 9. A subsequent elimination of the alcohol in 312 provided a divergence point towards 6 and 9. Attempts to close the 12membered macrocycle of 6 and 9 from 303 and 316/317 via ring closing metathesis solely provided intermolecular metathesis products 318 and 319. 112 113 114 9 phomactin G Scheme2.13. This study compiles historical information to highlight the role played by both East and West Eur... more This study compiles historical information to highlight the role played by both East and West European countries in the creation of Israel since before World War I. East European countries, especially Russia, Poland, and Romania, were as effective in this regard as the West Europeans. While racial policies were paramount in East Europe, including Germany, religious and strategic policies were as effective in the West, especially in Britain. Two points can be redrawn in this regard: That the question of Palestine was a Western question on both sides of the continent; it had nothing to do with the Eastern question that engulfed the Ottoman Empire before and during World War I. Additionally while World War II did not start the process of creating Israel, it accelerated it since the United States became an active supporter of the Zionist project. The second conclusion explains why all major powers give so much latitude to Israel, regardless of its constant neglect of international law t...

For some time in the past century, the issue of racism emphasized color or race. However, it incl... more For some time in the past century, the issue of racism emphasized color or race. However, it included religion in many cases. This attitude, which has subsided for some time, is making a strong comeback in many countries, foremost among them the United States, the world’s principal superpower. This study comments on the current racial ideas and compares them with ideas of a similar nature that were prevalent in the early twentieth century. It focuses on comparing the thinking of US President Donald Trump today with that of Lothrop Stoddard, known for his interest in the Muslim world, around the time of World War I and immediately after it.
