Path of Tengu 天狗道 (Tengudō)

唵 迦楼羅 薩婆訶

唵 広目天坊 薩婆訶

oi m8. welcome to the tengu realm. 👺

the main reason I am treading this path is to open up the mythology of The Lotus Sutra and other works with a similar (puranic) background, taking it back to the vedic roots & re-evaluating. turning the dharma wheel, as it were. this is one dharma adjacent to the buddha dharma, sanatana dharma, etc. in the post-post-modern world, people are still attached to various dharmas, and find delineation where there need not be, and also don't engage with the material in a substantial way. they go on endlessly repeating about 'gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, garudas, asuras, celestial beings, etc. etc.' but the topic is fixed and not open for discussion. those beings exist? yeah, well what are they? i'm here to say, that those 'beings' are just people. they're the different tribes of the times. we're going to open this up and live-in it and expand upon it and shed light in dark corners of the mythological reality.

Several years ago, after devoting years to deep meditation, I began to experience a 'flattening'. Where the mythological realm became mixed in with dreams, and dreams + mythology were experienced in the waking world. All 3 worlds were experienced in real life. It's kind of like Finnegans Wake where every part is the whole thing. I say, if you want to experience the mythological reality, bring it down into the 'real world', and experience the characters as people. This bringing-down-to-earth is the direction movements like Soka Gakkai are heading, and I think that is a good thing, it recontextualizes common things which were often thought of as lofty.

why? who should join?

I (the Tengu known as 寝坊 (ねぼう) (Ne Bō - the sleepyhead tengu)) decided to make this a real path after being thoroughly rejected from the Ramakrishna Order. I'm frustrated by 'priests'. The heirophant there at the time, after I asked for 5 years to get the initiation, told me, "You're not like us.". What? You just got done saying, "We're all one". I take that to mean that I do not have brown skin and come from the land of Bharat. The initiating Swami there was indeed a grand-disciple of Swami Brahmananda (Maharaj). Brahmananda had one encounter with a spirit, recounted thus in The Eternal Companion by Swami P (Prabhavananda):

Swami Turiyananda told me of an interesting exprienence Maharaj had at Lake Kusum. For several nights in succession as he sat down to meditate he was disturbed by peculiar noises and by the falling of pebbles and dust around him. At length Maharaj saw the spirit of a dead man standing before him, "Why are you disturbing me like this?" he asked. The spirit admitted that he had been trying to attract the Swami’s attention, and begged Maharaj to liberate him from his pitiful condition. Maharaj replied that he did not know how to do this "You are a holy man,” the spirit told him “If you will just pray for my release, I shall be liberated ” Maharaj did as he was asked.

That's essentially the only mention of working with spirits in the entire canon of the Ramakrishna Lila.

I've been left to contemplate, "You're not like us." in many ways. One of the ways is that I know that in my path I work HEAVILY with spirits, and that I do Bhuta Shuddhi as a mainstay. Shiva Bhuteshwara (Lord of Hosts). In my path I drink and smoke weed and fuck in the yab-yum, and play about with spirits to get my work done. They don't do like this in orthodox practices. They (specifically) don't teach this. If I'm ever going to find my guru (in human form), he's not going to be a prude-since-birth because I can't relate on that level.

I never understood the various teachings that promote the practice of "Fuck off forever" (extinguish existence by energetic implosion - classic nirvana/vaikuntha scenario). I affirm Brahman Sat, Jagat Sat. There's so much to do in the various worlds, the people who say "ignore supernatural/occult powers" because "they are obstacles to realize God" don't understand the state of "God Realization" for what it is. Basically they are engaged in TM (Transcendental Masturbation). Human beings at present are not ready for "God Realization", it manifests as a dissassociative state, and is meant for future evolutes of the species which resemble nothing like mammals. We don't have the hardware yet. It's pointless for a human being on earth to go to 'that state'. The state we should be striving for is much closer to home. That state has been described as 'becoming a molecule' by some. It has to do with spaceflight.

In that spirit, there's no requirements, no dire warnings. If you're meant for the path, you're reading this. No fixed cut-off age, no adhikari, no social status earned, nor diploma requirements (ridiculous). That said, aspirants should have an extreme zeal for tapasya, a desire to attain siddhis, nerves of steel, and śraddhā. This is the green berets of spirituality.

More historical analysis, criticism, discussion

it is said that the tengu realm exists for people who know about buddhist enlightenment but have 'some defect' or whatever and they can't or won't enter the nirvana.

"Tengu, the mischievous spirits, are often seen as distractions on the path to enlightenment. They symbolize desires, delusions, and the temptations that hinder one's progress towards liberation." ... "Tengu are believed to be beings trapped in a state of suffering due to their past negative actions. They are often portrayed as beings with great knowledge and powers, but their spiritual evolution is arrested by their attachment to the earthly realm." (Source: "Buddhism and Iconography in Early Japan" by Kakichi Kadowaki Entirely made-up by ChatGPT)

"In certain Buddhist traditions, Tengu are viewed as beings trapped in a realm between the human and celestial realms. They are said to be former humans who possessed deep spiritual knowledge but were unable to fully let go of their attachments and egos, preventing them from entering the state of Nirvana." (Source: "Shugendo: The Way of the Mountain Monks" by Paul Noriyuki Nagano Shokai Koshikidake [likely not a real quote])

"山伏は名利を得んとする傲慢で我見の強い者として、死後に転生し、魔界の一種として天狗道が、一部に想定されて解釈された。" - (source japanese wiki article on tengu) translation: "Yamabushi who reincarnate after death as an arrogant and self-interested person who wanted to gain fame and fortune, and Tengu-do was partly assumed and interpreted as a kind of makai (hell-realm)." [Author's Note: this lends credence to the fact that Tengu can wield Demon-Energy 魔気]

"Those who have even a superficial understanding of the Dharma are protected from falling into the lower realms. Their knowledge acts as a shield that prevents them from descending into the realms of suffering, such as the hells." (Source: "A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma" by Bhikkhu Bodhi)[also not a real quote... thank you sam altman]

What is that pride and arrogance? My argument is that the Tengu were just outsiders to the Buddhist fold who practiced magic and had all sorts of powers that the priests envied, so they needed to demonize these people to protect their grip on the populace's minds. It is not the Tengu who are prideful and arrogant, it is the Buddhist Priests. Priest's arrogance knows no bounds. This is why the Tengu dress up as priests, to mock them. Not the other way around.

Snooze Alert!: one famous chronicle of the tengu is of course 井上円了「天狗論」(Inoue Enryō's "Tengu Debate") found here. In this he basically plugs his ears and pisses the bed going, "IT'S NOT REAL, not real nope, not real this is the modern age we don't believe in such things!!!(myth)" without providing any real insight.

Sirius Connection

Tiāngǒu. "Heavenly Dog". The Tiāngǒu is often linked to the constellation known as "The Big Dog" or "Canis Major" in Western astronomy. In Chinese astronomy, this constellation is called "Gǒushi" (狗室), which literally means "dog mansion" or "dog chamber." The Tiāngǒu is believed to reside in this constellation. Canis Major = Sirius = Dog Star. In ancient Egypt, Sirius was associated with the goddess Isis (Nut) and was believed to be a source of spiritual energy and power. In traditional African and Native American cultures, Sirius was often used as a marker for important ceremonies or events, such as the beginning of the harvest season.

In chapter 69 of the Book of Lies, The Master To Mega Therion describes a method for contacting the beings who reside at Sirius (The Sirians).

Hint: Dog Days of Summer - Sol in Cancer ♋︎

"If one meditates on one's real nature (Self), that is pure rest, then one becomes (like) a great bird, and finds a woman to make spiritual love to." -- Tantraloka

Thus Tengudō affirms the Dog conception of the Tengu over Avian conceptions (though a mix of the two is accepted). But it should be noted that the 'long nose' actually refers to a 'snout'. Anubis & Nut are early prototypical archetypes. It's most likely that the dominant species who evolved at Sirius came out of a canine-like breed and then mastered gravity, similar to how simian-primates [are poised to] do the same at the Sol System [here].

Lotus Sutra quote about Avains. This betrays a serious type of speciesism, and that the Buddhist Enlightenment is really not so hot if you're gonna be literally racist like that..

Westward-migrating Outcastes

HDG Swami A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada often lambasts yavanas and mlecchas as being uncouth savages, although they were simply a different tribe: "The Mleccha people were Sakas, Hunas, Yavanas, Kambojas, Pahlavas, Bahlikas and Rishikas. The Kiratas, Khas, Indo-Greeks, Pulindas, Gurjara, Scythians, Kushanas and Arabs were also mlecchas." [Read As: Real People. Fathers, Mothers, Sons, and Daughters, who Lived and Loved, unlike Brahmins] (Fun fact, the Kalachakra & lineage of Maitreya + Kalki + The entire Shambhala mythos is originated by literal Melecchas). Throughout vedic history the other 'savage tribes' such as the Naga were demonized and needed to be defeated and thereby converted to Vishnu-ism, only then could they be considered valid.

Even westerners describe outside practices as that of 'barbarians', though in the Hellenic Penninsula, The Barbars were just people who didn't live in the polis. The Yahwists and their Abrahamic empire's #1 adversary / enemy for all-time has been their own brothers (Cain-in-ites), the 'people who live in caves' who are 'howlers in the night' (lit. goetia) and set up other tribe's deities as demonic (72 spirits of the lesser key). In all such cases, there is some self-righteous asshole PRIEST who demonizes outsiders. Something they don't like or understand, but which is perfectly valid on their own. How about going forward, we remove xenophobic elements from our religions, thanks? The Tengu are no different. We find our source of power in identifying with the so-called demonic and find that the system that birthed us is parading around as the hero of the story (main character syndrome) when in fact they are powerless weaklings ruled by fear.

"The west is... the station of the Garuda bird which was said to be hostile to snakes.... But this was at a stage of mythology when 'opposites' had come to be considered as hostile to one another. The hostility attributed to the Garuda is a distorted remnant of myth concerning the supposed conflict between the Great Old Ones and the Elder Gods. This would seem to be confirmed by the fact that among the Tibetan Bardo entities, many are onicephallic. One class of entity, in particular, is of hideous mien, with batlike wings sprouting from its back.

Another dim echo of the 'conflict' between the birds and the snakes appears in the Aztec conception of Tlauzicalpantecutl who represented Venus as the Lord of the Dawn [Lucifer]. Dickhoff notes that "Venus had an evil reputation among the Aztecs, who stopped up their chimneys to keep out Venus-radiation when the planet appeared." ... "This same Lucifer, the Old Serpent, was cast out upon earth, where he became the arch enemy of all mankind in order to avenge himself on his exilers."

There is no conflict between the Elder Gods and the Great Old Ones; They are opposite terminals of a Single Current." -- Kenneth Grant, Hecate's Fountain, ~p.177

^^ The Westward-moving Migration of Exiles / Pariahs / Out-Castes is an important, integral mystery concerning the Tengu. Commodore Timmy [by way of Stuart Bland] elaborates in Intelligence Agents (Future Histories):

"On every Biological womb-planet the Genetic Highway climbs East to West in the Temperate Zones. These are easily located... Primitive organisms, face the sun, ride passively towards the sun. More advanced organisms develop the mobility necessary to the sun, to chase against the rotational tide... Fore-spin is moving west, facing the momentum. Pushing up against the rotation to develop mobility; to attain altitude. Moving into the future. Ascending into the empty ecological niches. Why were the empty [those who have read Settlers will likely tend to disagree with this asessment] New American Continents (lobes) discovered and filled from Europe and not from Asia? Why didn't the wisdom of the East sail across the Pacific? Why was California explored and settled by Europe? Why didn't a wandering Chinese discover Venice? Why didn't the orientals colonize Europe? ...

The greatest technological problem faced by DNA on this planet was the scaling of the Atlantic Ocean. For 1,000 years (400-1400 AD) the waves of the mobile-elite Sperm-eggs splashed up to the western-European Atlantic beach-ledges. And waited... Note the timing of the Atlantic Ascent. It had to await the Protestant Reformation. The Luther Self-Actualization freed gene-pools from the Catholic-hive center. Only a society of self-actualized families, democratically linked together, was capable of pushing gene-pools three-thousand-miles up [ie west], into the storm altitudes of the North Atlantic.

Recall that the ascent had ben made over and over again during the ten centuries before Columbus by doughty Vikings, fervent Irish monks and hundreds of masculine bands. Some returned to tell the story of the new ecological niche. But the signal did not activate the swarm because the technology for lifting gene-pools three-thousand-miles into the unknown had not emerged. Thousands of European sailors who found the new lands did not return... But nothing happens until the family-units move together. You see, the King-Emperor does not want to migrate. Are you mad? Leave the seat of Imperial power and luxury? No. The feudal society cannot migrate..."

"As Heaven is both physical and astral, and as the Svarga is on the physical plane also, where the great risis like Vyasa, Ashvathaman, Markandeya and others are said to be still living in their physical bodies, so there are physical hells also, though not known as Hells. What are these prison houses in every well-governed community but physical hells? What is this outcasting by the society, but making one feel the torture of hell, in fact Gautama in his law book definitely calls this stage hell, and some say that Gautama did not believe, in another form of hell."

Notable Tengu throughout time

Dai-Tengu

The most recent Dai-Tengu in my mind was John Cunningham Lilly. He was a fighter-pilot, so he was quite literally up in the air, and pioneered interspecies communication, float tank tech, generalist consciousness exploration. There was a period in his life when he very seriously considered having an external series of electrodes grafted to his skull so he could activate various nerve centers and achieve full control of the brain via instrumentation [beat that, neuro-link!]. He got to a point where he'd systematically achieved every possible state from the highest Samadhi / Satoris to the lowest bleakest disturbing Hell-states, and eventually would just make up his own places to go beyond all these. A+ Role Model for any of us.

Tengu

This is not an attempt to set up a hierarchy, or one-trumps-the-other. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

Dr. Christopher Hyatt PhD. -- This fellow is the foremost example in my mind of a human that struggled hard against the grain and became something more-than-human. Every word of his, though disruptive to average larval consciousness, is sweet nectar which brings the highest bliss..

Dr. Timothy Leary PhD

RAW

Lesser Tengu

Crowley. For his mountaineering. Although he gets a lot of flack, I still deeply appreciate and honor him. People love to poo-poo on his character and highlight negative qualities, the guy mastered freemasonry and the golden dawn systems before 30 which he then integrated into the O.T.O. and founded the A∴A∴ among other lineages, channeled hundreds of works of beautiful amazing poetry, and achieved Samadhi, what have you done?

Process of becoming a Tengu

Process is pretty simple (although it's the hardest thing concievable in practice). If you understand the A∴A∴ system, it applies to all religious paths (dharmas).

What you're going to do is start off by performing a 100-day fast (minimum). If you need help, I'll tie you to a tree and beat you with sticks so you don't give up.

*blah blah talk to a 'real doctor' before undergoing anything because you're a little bitch who clings to anything daddy-pharma says as the absolute truth... contact our legal department [located in Nagendrabhavana, Outer Circle of Hell] for our official statement on this.

When that's over, begin the daoist deepbreathing + visualization practice of Etheral Embryo.. also called Embryonic Breathing.

instead of creating a human embryo, you're going to create a tengu egg in the astral.

after 9 months the egg will hatch and you will take your first steps into the tengu realm. you typically start off as a 川天狗 (river tengu) which is a type of 烏天狗 (crow-billed goblin) or lesser Tengu as compared to regular Tengu & Dai-Tengu.

*Members of the three higher castes take a "second birth" when invested with the sacred thread; all birds are twice-born, in and from the egg. -- Garuda Purana, footnote.

Life 'aint easy as a baby tengu. Just like, if you remember being a baby birdling, it's fly-or-die. In my city after a heavy rain I always see tons of dead baby birds on the sidewalks, remember to take off from the ground and don't make your nest too high if you don't know how to use your wings. Important note from my teacher: most-everyone, ie humans, are obsessed with three things, nesting, congesting, and digesting. Any legit spiritual practice worth its salt is going to involve you minimizing time in the nest. Don't obsess over nest! Fly out of there as soon as you can.

when you start venturing forth you'll notice that the realm is inhabited by other baby ghosts of many varieties. Young ghosts & goblins are just like young humans, they can be visciously mean or super-sweet. It is a time to grow passed temptations and assert your dominence. At this level one should master Judo as a foundational practice. Learn to be thrown to the ground and get punched in the face.

you've got that down? now, go forth! you little devil!

Martial Arts

We Tengu taught the art of warfare to humans for centuries. Now let me outline the entire path Tengudō as it relates to martial arts:

Level 1: Judo The initiate learns the art of balance and using the opponent's energy against them. This represents the foundation of the tengu path, where one learns to navigate the world with grace and fluidity.

Level 2: Jiu Jitsu The initiate learns to grapple with opponents and use joint locks and chokeholds to subdue them. This represents the tengu's ability to control their environment and overcome obstacles with strength and precision.

Level 3: Karate or Kung-Fu The initiate learns the art of striking and defending with fists, feet, and other body parts. This represents the tengu's ability to harness their inner power and unleash it with focused intensity.

Level 4: Open System (e.g. Hapkido) The initiate learns a range of techniques and styles, combining them into their own unique approach. This represents the tengu's ability to adapt to changing circumstances and draw on a variety of skills to achieve their goals.

Level 5: Mastery System (e.g. Aikido) The initiate achieves mastery in a particular style or approach, embodying its principles and techniques as second nature. This represents the tengu's integration of their training into their being, becoming a true master of their path.

Level 6: Weapons The initiate learns to wield the Eighteen Weapons of Shaolin.

Level 7: Spiritual Weapons (Qi) The initiate learns to wield pranic weapons. after pranic weapons are taught, you learn Shakti weapons, the most powerful energy force in the universe. The Chakra, Vajra and Brahmastra are taught (among others).

Level 8: Hidden Teaching xxx

Final Stage: Dai-Tengu Transformation The initiate embodies the spirit of the tengu, you are a force of nature..

Unlike most paths, in this one you can start from the top and work your way down if you're not getting anywhere at the bottom rung. It's not tree-hierarchical, the system is rhizomatic and like a torrent you can download it in parts and still recieve the whole thing.

That said, let us continue down the path...

Group Ritual

"Members of Soka Gakkai demonstrate their religious identity daily by engaging in congregational exercises in public places, and the society also stages enormous annual festivals that remind unfriendly observers of Hitler's Nuremberg rallies. [sic] (Appealing as they do to newly urbanized masses in the cities of Japan, the muscular modernity of Soka Gakkai's festivals smacks more of American football crowds than of Hitler's Nazis.) On these occasions, crowds of up to 80,000 assemble in an open air stadium where they engage in mass calisthenics, applaud dancers and marching bands, and, on the appropriate signal, unite in lifting colored placards high above their heads, thus giving shape to appropriate slogans when viewed from the other side of the stadium. The meeting comes to its climax when the sect's leader, Ikeda Daisaku, appears and exhorts them to labor even harder towards "The Third Civilization" that Soka Gakkai aspires to bring to all the world." -- William H. McNiel Keeping Together in Time: Dance and Drill in Human History, 1995, ~p. 99

Now imagine if you will, these group calisthetic exercises being performed by Mutant [or Futant - Future-oriented mutants] Humans who have mastered gravity, in High Orbit... See Alchemy page for more on the specifics of that. But I speculate or posit that the group ritual + weightless space will be the trigger for evolution. This easily lends itself to the Tengu, as Infinite Space allows for infinite expressions, niches, doesn't have to be pigeon-holed into the Buddhist canon. Eventually I plan on doing a thorough commentary on The Kalki Purana, but in brief -- Kalki who rides the white horse Devadatta [which appeared as Arjuna's Transcendental Conch Shell during Kurukshetra, and set up as the Great Enemy of Gautama Buddha during that incarnation (foreshadowing - taboo - hystones)] is said to destroy the last remnants of *HIMSELF* as the Buddhist tribes in the future age. The intricacies of this are extremely subtle, it'll take time to unwravel.

Kalki and Maitreya live together in the Tulsita, or Shambhalkul Village. There's no actual enmity except where the rational mind interjects itself unnessisarily. In the Shambhalla mythos, Maitreya is himself a Kalki King [of which there are many]. Just like the twins Horus & Set, a divided person will see division, a clued-in [ie integrated] person will see 'the same'. Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna sat on the bank of the Ganges and observed a young boy poking a stick through a grasshopper, seeing them both as Lord Rama, what could he do other than laugh, clap his hands, and say, "Oh Rama, you make your own trouble :)".

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah... "Much more significant than the economic are the cultural possibilities of Space Migration. It is the remarkable anthropological genius of Gerard O'Neill to recognize that the establishment of thousands of space-cylinder habitations will create an enormous plurality of culture-styles and moral systems. Literally each group of colonists who band together to finance and design a Space Habitat will be moulding a new consensual reality. Within the limits of physical security the colonists can determine the political, cultural and aesthetic dimensions of the psyche-space they inhabit." -- Commodore Timmy, Neuropolitcs, section: In Defense of Snake Oil Salesmen.
