HOT AUTISTIC ADULTS IN YOUR AREA ARE UNSURE IF YOU WANT TO TALK TO THEM...CLICK HERE TO ESTABLISH CLEAR INTENT

The armor stays on during sex because it takes like five people to help me take it off and put it back on again and I’d rather not call them at this hour

If you had an identical twin that you get along with, you could probably have a lot of fun by getting to know other sets of identical twins and then pulling pranks with them.

Like seeing two people who look exactly the same close proximity to each other? Yeah that's totally twins. But imagine being in an art gallery where there's a group of five people on the 1st floor, and you go up the stairs and ???? the exact same group of five people is also there?? And you didn't see them pass you at the stairs?

Kinda wild that every time a trans athlete does well it’s all about “ooh wahh but biological advantages” as if the kind of person who is both “Good At And Interested In Winning Competitive Sports” and also “Willing To Risk Losing Their Safety And Everything They Love In Order To Seize Life By The Ass And Be Who They Are Out Loud And In Public In A Society Prepared To Shred Them Alive” isn’t the kind of supremely driven person who might be actually pretty well-suited to Work Hard Get Point

Shocking You Would Allow This Trans Athlete Compete Against Normal Children When They Obviously Have The Advantage Of (checks notes) Wanting To Accomplish Their Goals More Than They Fear Death

Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

drawing of three actors with daemons onstage in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Caesar's actor stands in a spotlight on a center platform with a pigeon in front of him. The pigeon is wearing a very serious expression and a pair of lion ears and mane.ALT

different theater traditions would solve it differently, too. the greeks once wore rigid theater masks--they might once have also held up their role's daemon as a metal silhouette on a stick, a form as rigidly symbolic as their unchanging mask... and as easy to recognize from the back of the amphitheater.

consider also kabuki, with the stagehands in black, and the bright contrast of the actor's makeup and posturing. the daemon's role could be superimposed with patterned fabric overlays as well as ritualized posturing. a monkey daemon could pose and roar like a general's tiger, while a stag daemon could frisk around and like a servant's loyal dog. and if anything orange and striped was a tiger, and anything white with brown ears was a dog, audiences would be perfectly fine with this for the duration of the show.

theater doesn't have to be realistic, it has to be convincing. an actor's soul would be up to the challenge, whatever shape it was.

Columbo would have seen thru Kira’s bullshit right away. And after all we don’t even know his first name do we? That’s right, we don’t. The lieutenant is always prepared

Performative feminism is a most annoying aspect of our times.

I think my favourite concept in Dunmeshi is that... There is an urgency in most of us to sacrifice our peace of mind when push comes to shove. Perhaps to worry means that you care about the emergency at hand (whatever level of emergency that is subjectively) and we pinpoint focus on the task and everything else disappears. Our sleep and diet patterns change even though these activities are pivotal for our dopamine systems and functionally make us feel healthier and help us think clearer. It's self-punishing; the "grind" so to speak — to persevere we have to forget the self and think solely of the object.

But Dunmeshi doesn't let you get away with that. These people's friend is captive in a monster's body, their world is literally ending, and still they sit down to eat. To eat is to live. Only living things eat and it is the privilege of the living. Yes, there is a crisis. Yes they are upset and heartbroken and distressed. But they still focus on the food: the very thing that sustains you and gives you energy to think, to move, to keep going. A moment of gratitude offered to life by actually, consciously indulging in it. They aren't bad people for eating while Falin's suffering, no. It is simply unfeasible to give parts of yourself to a situation while hoping to gain twice as much back. Just take the time to make food, think about how delicious it looks, and eat. Even if you fail, you need to eat. Even if you succeed, you need to eat. You need to live life no matter what. You need to enjoy it no matter what. It is never "inappropriate" to just live your life.

“National teacher shortage” is a fun way of saying that the USA has made a passion driven job so ungodly inhospitable that even people who “just care about teaching, not the money” don’t even care about teaching anymore.

you mean i could make less at school than at mcdonalds while working 60+ hours a werk and being expected to take a bullet any minute and contracting every disease ever and still not be able to cover my bills june-september while parents and politicians blame me for why their kids are gay

Just saw a poll about school hours and I noticed that nobody specified the hours for Wednesdays (as they're half days), so I started wondering if Wednesday being a half day is not a universal experience...

Did your school have half days?

Yes, half days every Wednesday

Yes, half days on another weekday

No :( ('and I wish we had that')

No :) ('and I'm glad we didn't have that')

Nuanced

You know. When Spock says things like “Vulcans have no emotions”, I think of the time I asked my language instructor for the difference between two words in the target language, because she had corrected me on using one in place of the other. I knew them to translate to “feeling” and “emotion” (I mean. The “emotion” word was literally a loan word). And I think we use those words very interchangeably in my dialect of English. She said that the word translating to “emotions” meant the expression of a feeling, whereas the word for “feelings” referred to the internal state of a person.

I think maybe at one point in English, and in maybe in other dialects of English than my own, there was/is this same distinction, because the verbs “to feel” and “to emote” do have different meanings to me. But I could see how an “emotion” could become indistinct from “feeling” in a culture where feelings are, for the most part, automatically emoted, like the Star Trek future world seems to be… at least, the very culturally-American window of it that we get to see.

I could also see how that would be confusing to someone learning the language, who perhaps might rely on etymology to understand nuances of a new language… such as the fact that to “emote” is literally from Latin prefix e/ex, meaning, like, outside. As in “exterior”. And I can see how someone who held this misunderstanding might continue to use the language with the definitions that most fit what they mean, even after learning that a subset of the speakers, ahem, illogically do not distinguish them. Even if a given person they interact with has no clear cut distinction between feelings and emotions in their culture, there are other cultures on earth that do distinguish them, so it’s worth maintaining that distinction for those who do. And for those who don’t, well, the distinction is not all that relevant to their interactions with Vulcans, as Vulcans do not emote in the first place, therefore it is not logically imperative to shed light on Vulcans’ very special very private feelings.

All this to say that, at some point, after Jim has undeniable proof (a bond with Spock) that Vulcans feel—and feel deeply—he says to Spock, “oh my god, Vulcans are so full of shit, they’ve successfully conned us all into thinking they don’t feel, and on top of that, they say they don’t lie!”

And Spock responds, “Jim, Vulcans have never claimed they don’t feel, only the true fact that they do not emote as humans do. Furthermore, it is my experience that the majority of people to hold this misapprehension come from cultures like yourself, which do not clearly distinguish between feeling and emotion. There are many earth cultures that do make such distinctions and as such are less inclined to dismiss the possibility of our having feelings, though given the private nature of our internal lives we have never sought to clarify this point.”

“… oh my god, Spock, they gotta know. We gotta tell people this.”

“please do not” *

Anyways, that’s my headcanon, please do wear it out

* Alternatively: “I would ask that you do not, Jim”

I see this being more aos vibes.
