jack black’s performance in jumanji and the movie as a whole wouldn’t have worked nearly as well if the writers or actor had been mocking bethany and teenage girls as a whole. the jokes landed as well as they did because the character, as well as being melodramatic, vain, and self-absorbed, was also allowed to be smart, funny, kind and courageous. she was a comedic character but also a human being and not a walking punchline or streotype and that’s why it worked.
