I'm currently Lecturer in Film and Media Theory at Wiltshire College (Salisbury) and Bournemouth University. Between 2010 and 2014 I was Research Assistant at the University of Portsmouth, working on a major AHRC-funded project to explore the influence of Channel 4 on British film culture [see www.c4film.co.uk].

I'm interested in oral history, documentary (radio; TV; film) and community media. My recent PhD at Bournemouth University was on the uses of oral history, folklore and dialect in BBC and community radio in Britain.

TV interventions: Artists, activists and alternative media

Taking as its credo the title of the late Chuck Kleinhan's chapter within this collection, this c... more Taking as its credo the title of the late Chuck Kleinhan's chapter within this collection, this chapter will examine some past strategies or arguments that have been invented and deployed by video artists and activists to subvert, reform or reshape television, in order to consider how this might inform and conceptualise radical media and/or media history. Partly intended as a modest contribution to the development of (critical) theory in the study of alternative media (see Sandoval and Fuchs 2010; Fuchs 2010; Andersson 2012; Mowbray 2015), this chapter will cite specific examples of TV intervention or media selfrepresentation for their intrinsic significance but also to highlight the pitfalls and shortcomings of any rigid or limited ideological framework for conceptualising or promoting the diverse range of practices which fall under the rubric of 'alternative media'. 1 I would like to suggest that closer attention could be paid to the ideas and arguments of artists in the development of theory around alternative media, and this will be illustrated by a discussion about how video artists have quite naturally and readily assumed roles as theorists and/or activists, in developing arguments about the role that television could and should play in society. I will emphasise the need to contextualise alternative media examples, by investigating the institutional and regulatory structure and frameworks which can shape and determine media practice on a number of levels. The chapter will conclude by considering whether Carey's models of communication as transmission and (as) ritual (2008, orig. 1989) might prove useful in conceptualising alternative media.

Having ceased publication in 2015, Bucketfull of Brains (aka BoB), founded in 1979 by Nigel Cross... more Having ceased publication in 2015, Bucketfull of Brains (aka BoB), founded in 1979 by Nigel Cross, is prime candidate for the United Kingdom’s longest-running music fanzine. When Cross relinquished control of the zine in 1985 its identity changed, but it retained the ‘voice’ of a zine despite increasingly assuming the ‘look’ of a magazine. This liminal identity also extended to its transatlantic focus and its straddling of punk and psychedelic music scenes. This article demonstrates how BoB also ‘bridged the gap’, especially in terms of taste communities, between the countercultural/underground publications of the 1970s and the punk and post-punk fanzines which came later. In doing so BoB was ideally situated to document the long-running garage rock revival of the 1980s and indeed was regarded as ‘the Bible’ of this scene by its readers. This article examines the origins of BBC2's reputation as a purveyor of films from around the... more This article examines the origins of BBC2's reputation as a purveyor of films from around the world, exploring the significance and impact of the strand World Cinema (1965–74) and assessing the range and diversity of its offer. Foreign-language titles had been broadcast by the Corporation since before the Second World War, due partly to their ready availability at a time when Hollywood films were ‘off limits’, given the hostility of American (and British) film companies towards the new rival medium of television. During this early period, however, these continental films were not popular, undoubtedly due to the fact that subtitles were very difficult to read on small, low-definition television screens. BBC2, with its commitment to minority tastes and interests and its use of both the higher-definition 625-line UHF system and colour, was perfectly placed to revive and foster interest in world cinema. This article is about two low-budget British road movies which have long disappeared from the cul... more This article is about two low-budget British road movies which have long disappeared from the cultural radar: Fords on Water (1983) and Coast to Coast (1987). These films will be used as case studies to explore a number of factors that shaped film and television culture in the early to mid-1980s, including the importance of the television funding of feature films in an increasingly costly climate; the shifting strategic priorities of both the British Film Institute and the BBC during a pivotal moment in the history of their film-making activities; and the issues and difficulties involved in finding the right balance between social or political critique and comedy and generic conventions. The two films are rare examples of what might be termed ‘British bi-racial buddy-road movies’.
