Know as the Watcher or the Old Woman of the Mountains gazes down on Franconia Notch. Notice landslides. The one further away covered the road and almost hit the gift shop that was down in that area. Old Rt. 3 also can be seen. Photo must have been taken around 1950
The symbol of New Hampshire is The Old Man of the Mountain. He's gone now
New Hampshire ~ The state's most famous natural rock formation ~ The Old Man of the Mountain. His rock face is 25 feet wide and measures 40 feet from chin to forehead. Geologic events carved this profile into the granite ledges 200 million years ago. (The face fell off in 2003.) I saw it during a trip to the White Mountains as a child, and remember it fondly.
