Hair Loss Headwear Tutorial | Welcome to the third episode of our four-part series on hair loss! In this video, Nicky from Suburban Turban gives a tutorial on headwear options and... | By Macmillan Cancer Support | Nicky: Hi Amanda, my name’s Nicky. I’m from Suburban Turban and today we're going to look at some head wear styles. Nicky: So, we're going to start with a long cotton, crinkled scarf. It's about 180 centimetres long, by about 80 centimetres wide so lots of fabric so we can tie it nice and securely around the head and we can get lots of volume coming around your head. So I'm going to fold it in half lengthways and then I'm going to place your head in the middle of the scarf, so the scarf ends are pretty much equal, perhaps one just slightly longer than the other and then I'm going to twist the scarf ends here so we get a nice neat sort of face line yeah, and then just switch the ends over round the back yeah and then take the sides of the scarf up and round we'll take it off to one side and then we're just going to do a simple granny knot yeah, keeping the scarf nice and wide here, tied off securely Nicky: Yeah and then I'm going to tuck these ends away, so again we get some height at the front. We can tidy it up now, because the scarf won't move, we've secured it with a knot, final end in, everything is nice and tucked away at the back, nice and secure- how does that feel? Amanda: It feels so comfortable and I really love the colour. Nicky: Good good, well we went for the blue because of your eye colour, so I think that definitely sort of gives the colour more punch in a way. Nicky: So a slightly different format of scarf it's 180 in length, about 110 centimetres in depth so it's still a big scarf, but silk is a lovely material to wear, it's super light, breathable and it has that slight sheen to it, so it can look quite glamorous as well if you've got a smarter event to go to. So the scarf is folded in half and then folded again onto the diagonal and then I’m going to take the scarf point of that diagonal to the front of your head. Taking the scarf down to the nape of the neck, scrunching up the scarf sides here. And then just tying off in a knot over that triangular point. I'm gonna pull some of the fabric back, so we disguise that defined head shape, lots of soft draping at the back there and then just knot off the scarf ends at the front. And then we’re gonna take the scarf point, wrap it up and over that knot, tucking it in behind. Then you can reposition the scarf so that you are happy with it around your face and I'm just gonna wrap these scarf ends around it and you could tuck them in behind, but I like secure headwear that's not going to move, we'll just position that up slightly, have a look in the mirror, yeah? So it's tucked in. Amanda: Yeah Nicky: There it is, but just to make sure it's secure all day, I'm going to use an elastic hair band and just pop it over the top. So it's all hidden, but that hopefully feels nice and secure? Amanda: Yeah it's a style I would definitely wear, I really like it. Nicky:Yeah? Amanda: Yeah. Nicky: Slightly different scarf format here, a square scarf , about a meter square, crinkled silk, but a super lightweight bandana to wear under a favourite summer hat or you know where the weather's getting warmer, a scarf and hat combination can be nice and cool to wear. So I'm just gonna... I folded that along the length, so we fold it on the diagonal and you've got the scarf point at the back of your... at the back of the head and we're gonna take the ends round and just tie in a bow. Nicky: One loop of the bow all the way through so it sits slightly flatter, but you've got this sort of interesting dangly bit here and then I'm going to take the that triangular point of the scarf and just pull it down underneath the scarf end, so we can tuck it all in, so it's nice and secure at the back yeah? You're happy with the placement of that at the front? Amanda: Yeah, it's perfect Nicky: And then straw trilby... Nicky: Yeah? Amanda: Yeah Nicky: So full coverage nice jaunty angle, but full coverage round the back and of course, if you go inside you can take it off. Amanda: yeah. Nicky: It's still completely covered or back on again it's a nice sort of casual fashion look. Amanda: I love hats so this is my favourite so far. Nicky: Good, good. Nicky: So we've taken a look at some different scarf tying techniques, now I thought we'd take a look at some headwear styles, so the first one I want to try is a cap style. Nicky: Lift it up, it's quite important to adjust your head wear when you first put it on. Keep the brows visible, the lobes of the ear- it's like a stand for your hat and it doesn't close down the face. Amanda: Yeah. Nicky: What do you think of that? It's just a light Jersey cap. Amanda: I love the ease of it and the softness of the fabric, yeah. Nicky: Okay, so if you move on now to a dressier style, so turbans are very much in at the moment and very easy- just pull on. I'm just adjusting the pleats of the fabric, so we get that again nice soft line around the head disguising the defined head shape. Is that sitting a little bit low? How does that feel? Amanda: Yeah it's great, I'd wear this in the evening. Nicky: Yeah. Nicky: We often have ladies who have a special event, maybe they're the bride themselves or their mother of the bride, or they've got Ascot and they've got the outfit, but they're not sure what to wear on their on their heads, so I brought along today an example of some bridal headwear, a soft Jersey turban. So yeah, really easy pull on look, a soft Jersey based turban. I'm just gonna sort the fabric drapes, so again you've got that softness going around the head, but obviously a little bit more glamorous, a little bit more chic with the ostrich feather pom on the top. How does that feel? Amanda:I love this Nicky, it's really fabulous, really special Nicky: Yeah good- well that's what we want , we want women to feel special on their big day. Amanda: Thank you so much for your time, for showing me all these great styles that I didn't know about before, I'm gonna have to go out and buy loads of loads of scarves and turbans now, thank you. Nicky: Good, it's good to have choice. Amanda: Thanks Amanda: Thanks for watching this video, I hope you found it interesting why not check out our other tutorials on makeup and wigs or check out the video where we talk about our own experiences with hair loss.
