Chapter one provides an overview of library automation packages available in India. It discusses general system requirements and functional requirements of a typical fourth generation package. This chapter also explores the trends and future of library management software.
Chapter two sketches the development of open source movement and its affect on library domain. Identifies the available open source software in the domain of library automation and also explores the possibility of the application of open standards in organization of information entity.
Chapter three discusses the methods of installation and configuration of Koha in Windows and Linux environment. The configuration part of this chapter is broadly divided into two sections. One section deals with the setting of system preferences and the other manages configuration of operating parameters.
Chapter four shows the way to set Koha for performing acquisition module in Indian environment and discusses the methods of performing activities related to automated acquisition subsystem.
Chapter five is concerned with the crucial area of cataloguing. It discusses the methods to identify and apply MARC 21 bibliographic format for different document types. This chapter demonstrates the methods to manage complex tags and subfields of MARC 21 bibliographic format through the application of PERL scripts, and provides guidance for encoding cataloguing data in standard ways.
Chapter six includes the process of setting parameters to start circulation in Koha. It also gives a step-by-step method for performing issue, return, reservation etc. required for circulation staff.
Chapter seven covers serials control processes and report generation activities in Koha. It shows configuring method for activating serials control operations, provides methods for managing serials issues, and guides in generating different sorts of reports in Koha.
Chapter eight provides different additional features available in Koha such as OPAC, Z39.50 cataloguing, export/import, backup & restoration, authority control, security and customization.
