A kitchen soffit (aka bulkhead) is something that majority of us have in our kitchens. They are often created to hide wires, pipes or other mechanicals in our kitchen. Sometimes they are even there to just fill the space above your cabinets. Either way, I personally find most soffits can make a home feel dated and extremely closed-in. What does everyone think of dropped ceilings/bulkheads in the kitchens (over the cabinets + island)? Did you/will you/ would you? eg.

I knew when I saw this wall during framing that it was the perfect spot for a chalkboard. I and the kids love chalkboards but my husband is not so much a fan. He was fine with me adding one as long as I framed it out nicely and promised not to do a full wall chalkboard. I figured today was a good day to get this little project started.
