Each "L" is created by joining a 24" board and a 35" board using pocket hole screws. To hold the wood in place you just attach 1" screws through the brackets and into the wood. We stained the wood with Varathane stain in Early American and distressed it a bit with a sander! LOVE how much it added to this kitchen for under $50!
