Hot Take:

Villians in entertainment media donโ€™t always need a redemption arc or to be forgiven for their actions.

There is a reason they are VILLAINS.

If their personality and backstory dictate that theyโ€™re incapable of change, then donโ€™t change them.

Bad guys canโ€™t always turn good. Think about some Disney villains. Frollo and Mother Gothel donโ€™t deserve any sort of redemption. Frollo straight up gets sent to Hell.ย โ€œoh but they have reasons for doing bad thingsโ€ yeah selfish reasons. Thatโ€™s no better.

The one thing Iโ€™m starting to see a pattern of in media is this:

Villain: โ€œHey, Iโ€™m the main villain of this series. Iโ€™ve slaughtered hundreds upon thousands of innocent lives, forced the survivors of my attack into slavery, and now I plan on moving to the next location to repeat the cycle.โ€

Protagonist: โ€œWhy are you doing this?โ€

Villain: โ€œBecause others entities are an eyesore to me and donโ€™t deserve the right to live so Iโ€™m wiping them out.โ€

Protagonist: โ€œCould you maybe, not do that? Because that seems a little extreme.โ€

Villain: โ€œAnd what will you do if I refuse to change my ways? Kill me?โ€

Protagonist: โ€œNah, Iโ€™m just gonna prove that your way of thinking is wrong and show you the right way of thinking in hopes that it will change you.โ€

Villain: โ€œDonโ€™t you think that option is a lot more ludicrous than trying take me out? It would probably be easier to just get stronger and kill me or take over my place and then try to salvage/fix my wrong doings.โ€

Protagonist: โ€œNah, Iโ€™m sure you didnโ€™t mean to do it. You deserve a second chance.โ€

Villain: โ€œBut according to my backstory, personality, and motives I donโ€™t think itโ€™s possible to write me into a redemption arc.โ€

Protagonist: โ€œWeโ€™ll retcon some stuff and throw in some unforeseen backstory that was never mentioned before until the last minute or something.โ€

Villain: โ€œHmmโ€ฆ Sounds ridiculous, but okay.โ€

I donโ€™t mind villains who do get redemption arcs, but if the series makes the villain out to be an OUTRIGHT VILLAIN, then why try and give them a redemption arc or show forgiveness if the villain was never intended to change or is even deserving of the change for their MALICOUS ACTIONS AND MOTIVES?

One final thing on this matter.

Forgiveness and the power of friendship canโ€™t fix all the countless innocent deaths committed by the villain or obsolve them of their actions.

Seriously, what kind of sense does that make for a villain to be like, โ€œWow, Iโ€™ve seen the error of my ways through your heartfelt words and kindness. Iโ€™m so glad you were able to show me how murdering others (including your friends) and being an all around irredeemable character has now made me redeemable!โ€

People didnโ€™t forgive Freeza.

People didnโ€™t forgive Bill Cipher.

People didnโ€™t forgive Tirek.

People didnโ€™t forgive Xehanort.

People didnโ€™t forgive Toffee.

Because they are ALL IRREDEEMABLE AND INCAPABLE OF FORGIVENESS BUT THAT DOESNโ€™T MAKE THEM TERRIBLE CHARACTERS AS VILLAINS.

While I love and adore Wander over Yonder, it kinda suffers from this, the hero who forgives the villainโ€ฆ even though they enslaved, tortured, or even killed and left people homeless. One thing I really wished the show dived into is how flawed and rather childish Wanders views are and I really hope that IF we get the third season some day he get and arc where he grows and matures, realizing that his own view wasnโ€™t the only one thatโ€™s the right one, that his help sometimes actually hurts others, and that some people canโ€™t be redeemed and donโ€™t deserve a second chance. Again, I love how sweet and silly WoY is, but I feel a show about helping could do good with taking a look at the more flawed side of the main characters morals.

Also not forget, not always even villains kill or murder or doing really horrible things. Itโ€™s boring when villain gets redemption arc. Itโ€™s losing villainy character, Iโ€™m still not over they had redempt one villain that I really adored just be hero again. Itโ€™s losing whole point of villain character.
