So, Disney storyboarded Hercules in live action with dancers. My mind is blown
that one time on Hotel Hell when Gordon Ramsay fed the ownerโs dog some shitty bread and then was afraid he killed her
He checked her pulse
Hot Take:
Villians in entertainment media donโt always need a redemption arc or to be forgiven for their actions.
There is a reason they are VILLAINS.
If their personality and backstory dictate that theyโre incapable of change, then donโt change them.
Bad guys canโt always turn good. Think about some Disney villains. Frollo and Mother Gothel donโt deserve any sort of redemption. Frollo straight up gets sent to Hell.ย โoh but they have reasons for doing bad thingsโ yeah selfish reasons. Thatโs no better.
The one thing Iโm starting to see a pattern of in media is this:
Villain: โHey, Iโm the main villain of this series. Iโve slaughtered hundreds upon thousands of innocent lives, forced the survivors of my attack into slavery, and now I plan on moving to the next location to repeat the cycle.โ
Protagonist: โWhy are you doing this?โ
Villain: โBecause others entities are an eyesore to me and donโt deserve the right to live so Iโm wiping them out.โ
Protagonist: โCould you maybe, not do that? Because that seems a little extreme.โ
Villain: โAnd what will you do if I refuse to change my ways? Kill me?โ
Protagonist: โNah, Iโm just gonna prove that your way of thinking is wrong and show you the right way of thinking in hopes that it will change you.โ
Villain: โDonโt you think that option is a lot more ludicrous than trying take me out? It would probably be easier to just get stronger and kill me or take over my place and then try to salvage/fix my wrong doings.โ
Protagonist: โNah, Iโm sure you didnโt mean to do it. You deserve a second chance.โ
Villain: โBut according to my backstory, personality, and motives I donโt think itโs possible to write me into a redemption arc.โ
Protagonist: โWeโll retcon some stuff and throw in some unforeseen backstory that was never mentioned before until the last minute or something.โ
Villain: โHmmโฆ Sounds ridiculous, but okay.โ
I donโt mind villains who do get redemption arcs, but if the series makes the villain out to be an OUTRIGHT VILLAIN, then why try and give them a redemption arc or show forgiveness if the villain was never intended to change or is even deserving of the change for their MALICOUS ACTIONS AND MOTIVES?
One final thing on this matter.
Forgiveness and the power of friendship canโt fix all the countless innocent deaths committed by the villain or obsolve them of their actions.
Seriously, what kind of sense does that make for a villain to be like, โWow, Iโve seen the error of my ways through your heartfelt words and kindness. Iโm so glad you were able to show me how murdering others (including your friends) and being an all around irredeemable character has now made me redeemable!โ
People didnโt forgive Freeza.
People didnโt forgive Bill Cipher.
People didnโt forgive Tirek.
People didnโt forgive Xehanort.
People didnโt forgive Toffee.
Because they are ALL IRREDEEMABLE AND INCAPABLE OF FORGIVENESS BUT THAT DOESNโT MAKE THEM TERRIBLE CHARACTERS AS VILLAINS.
While I love and adore Wander over Yonder, it kinda suffers from this, the hero who forgives the villainโฆ even though they enslaved, tortured, or even killed and left people homeless. One thing I really wished the show dived into is how flawed and rather childish Wanders views are and I really hope that IF we get the third season some day he get and arc where he grows and matures, realizing that his own view wasnโt the only one thatโs the right one, that his help sometimes actually hurts others, and that some people canโt be redeemed and donโt deserve a second chance. Again, I love how sweet and silly WoY is, but I feel a show about helping could do good with taking a look at the more flawed side of the main characters morals.
Also not forget, not always even villains kill or murder or doing really horrible things. Itโs boring when villain gets redemption arc. Itโs losing villainy character, Iโm still not over they had redempt one villain that I really adored just be hero again. Itโs losing whole point of villain character.
This makes me insanely happy. BEYONCร IS PROUD RIGHT NOW
She ainโt play noooooo games!!!!!
