Sketching in Tanzania

'Drawing upon Community' is my 2nd Conservation Sketching Expedition, in which I visited the African People & Willdife Fund in Tanzania. APW works with rural communities to help them manage natural resources for the mutual benefit of people & wildlife. My visit involved sketching in the field and learning about the complex conservation issues in the area. On returning home I will create a traveling exhibition and lecture series to raise awareness of the project and funds for their work.

Maasai Shukas
Maasai Shukas, watercolor sketch from Tanzania, when I was visiting @AfricanPeopleWildlife This started as a note for me of the colors of people's shukas but soon became an attractive painting in it's own right (and one that some people came to check, to see if they were featured!) #alisonnicholls #dailysketch #artinspiredbyafrica #watercolor #maasai #tanzania
Leaving the Boma
Leaving the boma, watercolor field sketch from Loibor Siret in Tanzania, while I was visiting @africanpeoplewildlife Amazing, friendly people. Great organization doing wonderful work helping both people & wildlife. Watch for my endangered species day - Friday May 15 - donations and free gifts. #endangeredspeciesday #alisonnicholls #watercolor #artinspiredbyafrica #africanpeoplewildlife #tanzania

Serengeti Brothers
Another Serengeti sketch. Cheetahs brothers not yet understanding the art of camouflage - sitting bolt upright then wondering why everything has seen them! Available on Etsy with 50% donation to conservation. #alisonnicholls #dailysketch #artinspiredbyafrica #cheetah #serengeti #winsorandnewton
Maasai at Stream
The stream at Loibor Siret in Tanzania is surrounded by beautiful old fig trees. I could spend an entire week painting there! See more watercolors on my website. #alisonnicholls #dailysketch #artinspiredbyafrica #africanpeoplewildlife
Sketching while Drinking Tea
Stressed out? Have a calming cup of tea with friends, even if they're on Whatsapp or Facetime. Helena Mbarnoti (see Sunday post) invited me into her tea stall in Loibor Siret. I sketched her in pencil and added the watercolor later and sent her a laminated copy. She was a very good model, very patient and still, as she talked to the women sitting on the other side of the fire. #alisonnicholls #artinspiredbyafrica #winsorandnewton #africanpeoplewildlife
Serengeti Breakfast
Deserts, plains, vast open spaces with sparse trees or distant hills - these are the landscapes I love to be in and love to paint. Here's one I painted as I ate breakfast in the Serengeti, sitting on a rock. In between washes of color I drank tea and ate a hard boiled egg. Available on Etsy with 10% donation to conservation. #alisonnicholls #dailysketch #artinspiredbyafrica #winsorandnewton #serengeti
