Located in a former Nabisco box factory, the Dia Art Foundation’s upstate outpost is dedicated to showing off large-scale sculptures and installations. Among the best-known works on view are Richard Serra’s monumental steel sculptures, which invite visitors to wander through and around them, and Louise Bourgeois’s collection of pieces (including one that will terrify arachnophobes) on the second floor. Give yourself enough time to wander the beautiful grounds, which overlook the Hudson River....

Once a dye mill, this spare, lovely hotel now uses Beacon Falls as a scenic backdrop instead of a power source. The rooms have a rustic-meets-modernist look, with wooden beds just inches above the floor and wrought-silver lamps that you could easily mistake for pieces of sculpture. Both the 8 am breakfast and the 8 pm post-hike cocktail taste better when you’re sitting on a handmade wooden chair next to the bar’s roaring fire. —LM
