Poverty made it necessary for her to go to work at an early age. When the American Civil War broke out, she served as a nurse in Union Hospitals. She had other teachers like Emerson and Thoreau who encouraged her to write. She used the alias, A. M. Barnard, to write adult books of passion and revenge. Louisa May Alcott was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1996. She is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery near Emerson, Hawthorne, and Thoreau, on a hillside now known as "Authors' Ridge" She wrote Little Women.
