Teachers should try to go beyond the "Good job!" phrases they use to praise their students. Referencing students' actual behaviors in praise is more likely to increase positive behavior than vague and arbitrary praise. Research supports behavior specific responses because it can increase "instructional time, on-task behavior, and correct academic responses" according to Villeda et al. (2016). These specific phrases let the student know exactly what it is they did right.
