Eddy | VSA Dog Trainer (virtual & Devon) on Instagram: "Save this easy game to try later 🙌🏻 Pattern games are great for dogs who struggle to focus, calm down or jump up to snatch things. They can help with building patience and predictability. 🧠 How do I play this? 🤔 👉🏻 Take a bit of food and hold it high. Start lowering it down whilst counting ‘ONE.. TWO.. THREE’ and feed on ‘THREE’. ✨ The golden rule is: they must get the food on ‘three’. 💣 If your dog tries to jump up to get the treat, the first few times you can count and lower your hand faster and work to progress it to counting and lowering your hand slower and slower. I personally use this to calm down and regain focus when the environment gets too much for a dog, orrr jumpy, snatchy little puppies 🐶 The best thing is

Josh | Dog Training & Behaviourist on Instagram: "How to teach your dog to settle ⤵️ 🐕 Place a Mat onto the floor 🐕 Lure your dog over to the mat and place into a down 🐕 Shower the mat with treats (to build positive associations and to build duration) 🐕 Slow your rate of reinforcement. Give a treat every 5 seconds, 10 and so on. This is to build duration and keep them staying for longer Lastly, proof their settle. This means taking them to different places and building up an amazing settle. ✅️ Take your time ✅️ Use the same mat when out and about ✅️ Practice this inside and out. It can be used with visitors, outside settles and various other situations Follow for more tips ✨️ #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogs"

64K views · 1.7K reactions | How are YOU reacting to your dog's behavior? As humans, we tend to focus on our dogs' behavior but often forget to pay attention to our own behavior and reactions. Creating a fixed space for your dog to relax and practice impulse control is essential to creating a balanced dog. The goal is to create a calm, neutral state of mind where our dog doesn't feel the need to react to everything happening around them. An example is the story I posted the other day where I had all my dogs on place while the plumbers were working in the kitchen and the landscapers were mowing the lawn. Instead of allowing them to be all over the plumbers or bark at the landscapers outside, instead I directed my dogs to stay on their beds, their "place," while all that activity was going on. When teaching this in the beginning, most dogs do not have impulse control or do not understand the concept of staying on a specific place for a period of time. What I see quite often is when the dog makes a mistake to get off the place, the human jumps up and runs over to try and keep the dog there. That fast/aroused reaction will cause a dog to learn that just moving or attempting to leave will cause you to frantically move, something a leader would never do. Instead, if your dog is moving on their place, let them. The moment they step off, immediately say "no" in a CALM but firm tone and guide them back. Do NOT rush. It's actually beneficial for them to make mistakes and receive calm, confident guidance from you. This way, they learn from mistakes and get to experience you as a calm, confident leader, which will build your relationship and help you achieve a happy, well-behaved dog!
