Tree Branch Painting Technique | We finally tried the branch slap painting technique! What an adventure it was....here's what worked and some helpful tips if you try this at home. 🎨🍂... | By Emily Seilhamer Art | I tried the Viral Tree Branch Slapping Technique and I'll tell you what, it's not as easy as it looks. If you're like me, you went to the park, you grabbed some tree branches from a tree. You cut off the leaves so that you could cover it in paint and then you're expecting instant satisfaction with a painting of a landscape but after you tried a few times you realized this is not really working. I even tried a big branch on a big canvas and I wasn't super impressed. So here's my suggestion. Plant twist don't use tree branches especially if you want to do this on a smaller scale go in your backyard and cut out some weeds or different plants that have a branch like structure this really opens up your options and they are flexible so it's much easier to get a more of an imprint on your canvas so I got a whole bunch of different ones to try first thing I would suggest for this even if you try the tree branches is get a small roller or craft roller your paint. That's going to help it go so much faster to coat an even coat. You're also going to need a lot more paint than you think you're going to. It has to be a type of fluid acrylic to make sure you get the imprint so even though I'm using acrylic crash paint that is more watered down, I even ended up taking a spray bottle with some water and watering it down even more. This helped the paint to splat on the canvas and get the imprint. So the first thing you need to do is do a simple background. The whole point of this painting is for contrast. So, any background you do, don't get too detailed. I'm just doing simple sunsets with my mop brush. This is an orange and yellow one and if you want, you can do like a very faded mountain in the distance either in the middle or at the bottom. Here's a green and yellow version. Super simple. Again, just with my mop brush. Here's a colorful sunset. You could do that but keep em bright colors. Here's a blue one. I did a eight by tens as well and I just did the little bit of an imprint of a mountain at the bottom with just doing a wavy line going all the way down. So that's what you need to do to start. Then take your plant. This was a dried up weed that that really does look like a tree so I think it's going to work. Now cover your surface. I just used a piece of cardboard. Take your roller with the paint and roll it right over top. The roller also helps to flatten it down a little bit so you can it the way you want it a little bit. There's my tool and then go to your canvas and just splat. That's perfect. We can work with that. And you can do it a couple times in different areas. You don't have to load it up again. Just do a few. That's how you start. Now have you ever played connect the dots? One thing that I'm pretty sure most of the viral videos aren't showing you is they're doing the splat and getting the imprint but they have to be going in with a brush and kind of connecting the dots. So you can do that. The less dots you have to connect the better but I've been taking my brush and making sure they have a base and all the branches. Here's the blue one. I used a dry grass that had a very branch like structure and splat it a few times. That one really worked because it had really thin branch like structures and go back and fill it in. Use your imagination with this and just trust the process because at first I know it looks like a mess. The nice thing about using plants is you have so many more options on different shapes. So here's another fun type of plant. I covered that in paint and I think it almost looks like seaweed when I did it or some kind of underwater plant. So I did wavy branch like structures for that one. And here's one that had a little bit of a chunky nature to it. Now I think this one would have worked a little bit better if I had taken some of the leaves off. It kind of looked like a mess there but you know what? We made it work. It kind of looks like a burning bush of some kind with that sunset. Here's the lilac bush with the leaves taken off but I left some of the flowers at the top so it looks like it has like little leaves and I connected some of those branches as well. As long as you have the faintest little imprint of the branches, it gives you something to work with. Here's some fun grasses. I had to try these just for funzies. Gonna try this on this orange one here. This one looks almost like a desert. Why does that remind me of a type of cactus or some kind of desert plant. What is it? I don't know but we're going to do really thin lines going up there as well. Okay, here's the last one. I took the dried grass that worked really well for the blue one. I wanted to try it on my pretty sunset here. Now, the final step is you have to add a moon up in the sky or any extra details. So, I'm going to take my pouncer sponge with white paint for this and just press down and twist up in the corner and there's a super simple landscape using a dried weed from my backyard. And make the details all different. So I did just suns and some but I also added little details like birds. A lot of you said I should do stars on my blue one so I took a toothpick. You could also use the splatter technique. Those really stood out. Let's do a tiny sponge here for a moon. And for a larger moon you could use a larger like mayo container lid or peanut butter jar. I tried to do the stamp method and it didn't really work that well so I just fill it in with a brush then but you could use a pencil and trace a big circle like that and fill it in if you wanted a bigger moon and here's my final results. I even fixed up the one on the big canvas. This was an adventure of a project. I gotta go clean up all the splatter paint that's in my studio now. Good luck if you try it. Have fun and remember, trust the process. Happy painting everybody.
