This article focuses on the work of the Counselling Cycle (CC) approach of the Swisscontact Sri Lanka (SCSL) component of the Development and Peace Sri Lanka project and identifies in which respects it helps to develop the agency of young people (aged 20-24) to contribute to peacebuilding and reconciliation at community level in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts of Sri Lanka and how it conforms to good practice. First the study looks at how the CC approach has contributed at community level peacebuilding and reconciliation among youth from different ethnic communities. Second, it identifies good practices and lessons learnt in the process of implementation of the CC approach with special reference to peacebuilding and reconciliation. The study employs two methodologies: the first is a systematic review of literature from a wide range of databases and SCSL documents; second is interviews with key informants and focus groups with selected participants. The study finds that in a deeply divided society change to a community at large in peacebuilding and reconciliation is achieved mainly by taking an individualized approach that goes from individuals to family and then gradually permeates into the community. The youth who participated in the counselling approach achieved personal transformation by widening their perspective on life and the world around them and this resulted in empowering and leading them to build inter-ethnic relationships.
