It’s about the INTRIGUE! it’s about the POTENTIAL! Early seasons Margaret is shown to be into Trapper multiple times in a way we don’t really see her into Hawkeye. I think they were leading up to something like this with Margaret and Trapper anyway (see: bombed) but we didn’t make it all the way there. I don’t think it’s even necessarily the sleeping together part that I care about here (lie) but moreso the shared moment of vulnerability in a time of crisis that would be interesting to see with Trapper (who we don’t see in these kind of tense situations that often) and Margaret (who needs to be seen as put together and competent as a woman in the army).
What I’m trying to say is this: put Trapper in danger! Hawkeye’s always the one going into the war zone (see: Dear Dad and Aid Station). Seeing how he would react on the other end of it would be something new! Trapper with his life in danger where suddenly Hawkeye is not there to make light of the situation and he has to grapple with very real human emotions in a very scary situation.
Then in the part 2, where Margaret is acting domestic and Hawkeye is unenthusiastic and uninterested and trying to get out of the situation, Hawkeye’s whole schtick of being allergic to commitment also works with Trapper. But Trapper is married! So it’s more complicated. Margaret has a history of sleeping with a married man so there would be an added layer of this falling in line w her patterns. There would also be the internal conflict of her whole thing in the ep being her learning that Donald is cheating on her, so cheating with known cheater Trapper complicates things even more. You can tell I feel strongly about this because I’m vocally in support of lessening Hawkeye’s role in an episode despite the fact that I think he should be involved in everything in every episode all of the time lol.
