| Description | Gross Point Village Hall in Wilmette (1896). Grosse Point was incorporated in 1874. The village was named after a sharp bend in Lake Michigan near Evanston. The "e" was later dropped. Gross Point became a destination for German immigrants coming to Chicago. By 1874, Gross Point had 475 residents. The town was originally administrated from a frame building that stood at the same site. The population almost doubled over the next thirty years. Gross Point was isolated from major transportation, so much of the city's income came from liquor taxes. As prohibition gained in popularity, Gross Point's fortunes declined. After the passage of the 18th amendment in 1920, the town went bankrupt. The town was absorbed by nearby Wilmette by 1926. |
