Winter festival, central Yekaterinburg. Both Yosha and Ksenia are wearing traditional Russian footwear, valenki. Kseia is wearing an REI snow suit deemed insufficient by most Russians, but notwithstanding the blocks of ice, it wasn't that cold this day, I believe. The wool felt valenki were (apparently) warm and worked fine as long as it was cold enough and dry enough that there was no slush - at this point in 97-98 in Yekaterinburg they didn't use salt or similar on the roads so the valenki didn't soak through. |
