The abandoned town is situated about 121 km south-east of Lake Tahoe at an elevation of 2.554 m.
After the discovery of a profitable line of gold, Bodie became a „gold-rush“ boom town in 1876 and reached only 4 years later a population of 7000 to 10000. The town went into decline after all gold deposits were exploited and became a ghost town by 1940 with only 20 habitants. Martin Gianettoni was one of the last three people living in Bodie in 1943, who took care of the around 170 old buildings, mandated by the owners of the land. The U.S. Department of the Interior recognized the designated Bodie Historic District as a National Historic Landmark in 1962. Bodie is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the United States.
