Cleaning with FFT
editHi! I am very glad to see that you have taken up cleaning images in the "Images containing regular noise" category in the last few days. As a longtime maintainer of the category I thought you might like some pointers or tips. One question first: are you using GIMP or Photoshop for the task? If you happen to be using GIMP then I could probably suggest some nice additional plugins/techniques.
I am mostly writing because of the issue that I frequently see in your edited images: ringing artifacts on the edges of the images (and occasionally on the edges of objects). The source of this problem is erasing the central vertical and/or horizontal "stripe" in the spectrum. Obviously, the easiest way to avoid this is not modifying these parts. Unfortunately, very often the unwanted frequencies tend to lie exactly there. What you can do is:
- Lessen the intensity of the vertical/horizontal central lines in the spectrum. You can most often accomplish that by cropping the white or black borders or edges of the image. Such sudden changes of intensity near the image edges show up in the spectrum's central parts.
- Work only with the frequencies that you really want to modify (that is, not with the low-frequency end of the spectrum). A really useful tool for that is the Wavelet decompose plugin for GIMP. It separates the image into layers, each containing a different part of the spectrum. Alternative way to accomplish this would be (in GIMP terms): duplicate the layer you are working on, blur the bottom layer (just so much that you no longer see the patterned noise), change the top layer to "grain extract" mode, duplicate the blurred layer and merge the top one onto it; you now have the high-frequency part of the image, which you can modify just as you normally would; after that simply set the top layer to "grain merge" and merge the two layers. The benefit of all this, aside from making editing easier in general, is that the vertical/horizontal central stripes do not normally show up in the high-frequency image's spectrum. Quite often it is actually beneficial to erase these parts in the high-frequency image as the noise is often located there, but you have to make sure that you don't remove any natural parts of the image in the process!
I guess that is all for now. I hope you found all this useful rather than annoying and wish you luck in your future editing endeavors! :) —Quibik (talk) 14:09, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Quibik. Thanks for nice words. I don't find it annoying at all, and i'm always thankful for good advice. I am using Gimp and I will try out the tool you suggested. I was very impressed with your work on File:AdamJerzyCzartoryskiOleszczynski.jpg and I didn't understand how you did it. And i didn't understand why this ringing artifacts occures on my edits, other that I might have done to much with the picture. Here is one picture I find hard do do anything useful to: File:Courson.jpg. By the way, do you think it is ok to convert black and white rgb-images to grayscale? :-) Magasjukur2 (talk) 18:13, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 17:04, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Disgarbaging
editHi Magasjukur2, when you enjoy SVG simplification you may as well afterwards correct the categorization. Look into AFEMRib.svg description as an example: (contains ValidSVG), and always change an existing Inkscape to Inkscape-hand (you can specify creator and editor).
When you overwork(ed) many such ribbons, I can offer you an own category for that. Only one ribbon example (the best of all reductions) should be categorized into then main category SVG Simplified. -- sarang 사랑 09:10, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- Now exists a category diffusion for ribbons and other militarias, with a short description in HandSVG (letter "o"). sarang 사랑 10:40, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for beeing so unpolite not answering you. I didn't notice your message earlier. Thank you for telling me about these categories and the template SimplSVG, I will use them.Magasjukur2 (talk) 09:36, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
I fixed the SVG syntax problem, but the large stars are a little squeezed (not sure whether that's intentional)... AnonMoos (talk) 11:49, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. The stars make me wonder too, but they looks like that in the original File:2bn11thmar.jpg. Maybe the whole image is streched. Magasjukur2 (talk) 12:12, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, if it's that way in a legitimate source, then let other people worry about it... -- AnonMoos (talk) 13:48, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

About simplifying
editHi Magasjukur2, you did a lot of SVG simplification.
The categories, like SVG simplified orders, are intended to encourage others to try the manual editing of SVG code.
- Tagging files with SimplSVG (or HandSVG) inserts into the file description a link to the validator, which shows immediately the SVG source code – a short way if somebody wants to look, eg. for a color code or how something is drawn, or to copy something.
- When SimplSVG is provided with previous and new size, it does not only calculate the reduction, it also categorizes with sort option the most reduced files first.
- New files, without previous ones, are sorted after the simplified files.
- When a description contains Inkscape, this should either be replaced by Inkscape-hand, or removed (otherwise it remains categorized in Created with Inkscape).
You may look at Bronze Star BAR.svg where I had modified the description. May I ask you not to insert manually into these categories? Good success further, sarang 사랑 19:00, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oh I see. I have inserted some files manually into these categories. I will undo this and use the template with letter "o" instead. Thanks for letting me know. Magasjukur2 (talk) 19:11, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your cooperation; our work will be a good and useful improvement for the Wikimedia commons. sarang 사랑 03:37, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot, I do my best. By the way: I looked into File:Flag_Thai_Admiral_of_the_Fleet.svg. That is amazing work! May I ask what is the benefits of making the viewBox from -110 -110 500 500 (Trying to learn). Magasjukur2 (talk) 08:28, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- This use of viewBox can save a lot of coding because it shifts the origin of the drawing; the often needed center of circles, or transformations, needs no specification when x=y=0. See SVG simplification by viewBox.
Hi Magasjukur2, you are a real expert and great simplifier! I just saw your Test.svg. May be you are interested in Tbc for colors explanation, as I inserted in your flag. -- sarang 사랑 08:27, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Again thanks a lot.I am looking into a lot of your code and find that I still have a lot to learn. This is what I like about the simplifying. I think dasharray combined with curves may give some exciting possibilities and sometimes suprising results. I think Tbc is useful and will use it. Magasjukur2 (talk) 10:32, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
More about
editSimple Ellipse.svg was a GNUPLOT drawing. Plotters can only draw lines, therefore any conic section or other curve consists of short pieces of lines. A lot of simplification can be done by replacing such constructs by a simple SVG element.
For the file description, I am nagging you with some remarks:
- the previuos editor tool was "Gnuplot"
- many users don't have a user entry but only a talk page; Phancy Physicist is a linkfix for Phancy Physicist
- the correct category Ellipses is an immediate subcategory of Conic sections, so catorizing too into the latter one is an overcat.
- the same with Geometry diagrams and Geometry (Geometry is also a supercategory of Conics)
- you have seen by yourself that SimplSVG does not work with "other_fields"; you may add it to any other field (source, author, …) but not specify it at "other_fields" without Information field.
We have a template Created with Gnuplot; we do not have anything like "Gnuplot-hand" (as Inkscape-hand), and IMHO we do not need it, it is enough tagging with SimplSVG.
I corrected the categories of Simple Ellipse.svg, you may check the differences. -- sarang 사랑 08:28, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Simple Ellipse.svg cannot be reduced a lot. Just drawing it with a path, would save 7 bytes: the path d="m499,285a410,215 0 1,0 2,0z"
is 4 bytes larger than a circle definition, but 7 bytes smaller than an ellipse.
More can be done at Simple Ellipse Circle.svg:
- I recommend SVG editing with Notebook++, a freeware editor; EOL conversion UNIX saves on byte for each linend, using just a lf instead of crlf of WINDOWS mode (6 bytes).
- Twice fill="none" can be defined only once within the group (12 bytes)
- Now the viewBox will help: viewBox="-500 -500 1000 1000" needs 29 bytes, but saves four times c?="500" 9 bytes each (7 bytes)
- A viewBox="-50 -50 100 100" makes stroke-width="10" obsolete (the implied width is "1" ), (18 bytes, and shorter numeric values)
- Why 1000 × 1000? Any other size will do it, and I centered it more with Simpler Ellipse Circle.svg, as you may look at.
Because it is not anymore a diagram of a plotting, I uncategorized it from Geometry diagrams; and because Conic sections is a subcategory (after some steps) of Geometry, I left it away completely. -- sarang 사랑 09:59, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't speak english, sorry. Why File:Brigade 14 sign.svg it badSVG? I made it by inkskap, all the elements in this image made by vecor graphic, This not Raster. החבלן (talk) 21:33, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. You have vectorized the image, but the raster graphics is still embedded in the file. It starts at line 53 in the source code and then again in line 78 (<image xlink:href="data:image/jpeg;base64...). I can remove it and you will see the difference in file size. - Now I understand what was my mistake. Thank you. החבלן (talk) 15:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
- No prob. By the way it is probably a good idea to use the "vacuum defs" and save as plain SVG instead of Inkscape SVG. In this particular case it would remove the raster. Magasjukur2 (talk) 15:31, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Fixed svg
editHi.
I noticed that you have fixed one of my svg-files and began to read more on the subject. I have made a few svg-files in Inkscape and will need to make a lot more for my wikibook Matematik för årskurs 7-9 (Swedish). If you can help me so no more of my files need fixing I'd appreciate it. I did now notice the "Vaccuum defs" and to save as Plain SVG so I'll use that from now on. Will that be enough?
I noticed now that I forgot to sign before... I'll sign now. Averater (talk) 11:02, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. It was nothing wrong with your SVG-file at all, but it was possible to simlify the SVG-code so that was what I did - no need for that much code in such a simple image. Please do not take it personally if someone is changing your images - it will probably happen no matter how good it is. If you don't like the changes for some reason, you can always revert. I use a text editor and write the code manually, it will always give less code than Inkscape. SVG - code is actually quite easy to understand. Using vacuum defs and Plain SVG will help to bring file size down though.
- Ok. Thanks. I didn't take it personally, I just wanted to learn so that my later SVG's will be better and won't be in need of any improvement. I have now begun to write them in a text editor. But do you know of any editor where I can write the code and directly see the rendered SVG? Averater (talk) 16:23, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry but I don't know about any such editor. I use notepad++ for editing and Internet Explorer for viewing(open the same document in both). I make the changes in Notepad++, switch to ie (Alt-Tab) and hit F5 to see the result. It works quite well for me. Magasjukur2 (talk) 11:58, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi I noticed you used the Category structured SVG. Well, but then you should be proud of your hand edited SVG code, so proud that you will use the template HandSVG and the reader is able to get a look at your coding. :-) Moreover don't use category Structured SVG directly, use HQSG, please. :) Achim1999 (talk) 21:21, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. Yes I like the idea of making SVG-code readable, and not only to make the files as small as possible (although I like that too). I will try to contribute to this work as good as I can. I didn't use HandSVG but SimplSVG so now it has both. I tried the HQSG too, but couldn't find out how to make it work on my one and only attempt, but now I see how you did it, so next time it will be good. Thanks for your attention. "other fields"
editHi Magasjukur2, recently I got the impression that you are not quite so sure how to use the parameter "other fields" of Information; done how in Ribbon of the John Jacob Rogers Award.svg it won't work. It is a bit more complicated, another template Information field has to be used; may be you did not find the description. To give you an example, I added two fields in Aldsm.svg. editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Transways Sport Club.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

To your knowledge
editRecently I did some overdue corrections at SimplSVG, with expansions - see the documentation. The behavior is now a bit different; there is case-sensitivity for some values of parm#4, e.g. "m" should now be written "M". A new parameter sub= allows more category diffusion. There are also some alterations at HandSVG. Any questions? sarang♥사랑 16:33, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Brimmerlogo.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Brimmerlogo.svg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
