File:Arkistolaitoksen värillinen logo.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Help decide the future of Wikimania
editThe Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).
After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.
In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.
With thanks,

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!
editYou are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Susannaanas,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:43, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Lars-Gunnar Nordström
editHi Susannaanas. I noticed that you uploaded File:Ilmari Aalto -The Bells, 1914.jpg from The Finnish National Gallery on 5 April 2016. I wonder do you know the status of "Red Composition" (1954) by Lars-Gunnar Nordström, which is currently on display at The Ateneum in Helsinki? Is it possible to request a release of an image of that work from them? The painting is currently shown on the internet here, alongside very many other images of Nordström's work, but the copyright status of these images is unclear. You will also see that "Red Composition" (1954) is shown at that page in a different orientation to the one used for its current gallery display. Many thanks for any help you can provide. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:00, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi! The uploaded image was part of a selection of images that the National Gallery released in the context of the Europeana campaign. We are looking forward to further releases, but I have no information about that myself. Paintings created in 1954 would be under copyright and the National Gallery would have no right to release them. Lars-Gunnar Nordström's paintings will be in Public Domain in 2084, since he died in 2014. The copyright holders may decide to license openly, but that's another story. Cheers, Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 06:45, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Susanna. That's very clear and helpful. I wonder do you have any idea for a second image that might be used to illustrate Nordström's article? I see that the fi.wiki doesn't have one. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:50, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- You could search finna.fi for openly licensed photographs. Here you can see more clearly the copyright status of the works, as they are listed through this service. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 10:05, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks again, Susanna., that's a really useful link. Do you have any idea which source has been used for all those Nordström images at that website? I'm guessing every single one of them contravenes copyright. (And I'm not really sure they are "fractal art" at all, either). Martinevans123 (talk) 17:37, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- They are all listed by the National Gallery and there are no redistribution rights to them. The National Gallery may display them based on a compensation agreement with copyright holders. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 17:44, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. So there may be some copyright agreement that is not published. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:54, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

What properties does Commons need?
editGreetings,
Structured Commons will need properties to make statements about files. The development team is working on making the software ready to support properties; the question is, what properties does Commons need?
You can find more information and examples to help find properties in a workshop on Commons. Please participate and help fill in the list, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
Translation request
editHello, may I ask you for some help?
The Template:Created with/fi (working together with the Template:Created with .../fi) needs a professional translation.
Examples how to do are the English version Created with .../en which is very simple,
may be your language needs a more complicated layout like e.g. Created with .../it or Created with .../es.
Far below at that documentation it can be seen swiftly how each selected language is translated.
May be I made not clear what I am asking you to do, just give me a Ping to get more explanations. -- sarang♥사랑 08:15, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships
editThere is a proposal on the Bureaucrat's noticeboard to automatically expire GWT memberships after one year unless the user requests an extension. Please add your views and suggestions to the discussion. The reasonably informal process for getting access to GWT access will remain as is.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:RMK PK 3523.tif, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Maps upload
editHi Susanna! Hope you're well.
I was wondering if I could trouble you for any thoughts on a map upload -- pilot set at Category:BL18C_pilot, bot request at Commons:Bots/Requests/JhealdBot (6)
Do these look all right to you? Any suggestions for things I should adjust or improve? Do you agree with Eugene's suggestion that I should try to internationalise the creator role, eg Draftsman?
- I have myself used Wikidata values in quite unorthodox ways. I have been adding them with the Q-template to fields that are not initially prepared to handle Wikidata values. I have believed that in this way they will be disambiguated readily for SDC.
I should mention that I added an extra field to {{Map}} for 'contributor' -- hope this is okay. The MARC-format library records I'm working from distinguish quite strongly the individual(s) considered to have primary responsibility for the work, as against other contributors, and I thought this was a useful distinction to be able to preserve. I think you may have reached a similar conclusion, if I remember the last Structured Data consultation correctly.
- I will study this, but I don't feel strongly against at least.
Also slightly non-standard, on images like this one with multiple subjects, I have added a new template {{WrapWD}} because otherwise it wouldn't be clear which wikidata item corresponded to which location. I have also stuck with the (LCSH-derived) forms of names used for places per the original record, eg "Magellan, Strait of (Chile and Argentina)", rather than something more internationalisable like "straits of Magellan"; or Strait of Magellan (Q48365). Not sure whether or not that is the right choice.
- I think it is important to record the format in which the name was written in the original (at least as text) , but for reference purposes I think one will have to be satisfied with the title of the Wikidata item.
The other aspect I wanted to pick your brains on: do you think it would be okay to create Wikidata items for these objects? It would be nice to be able to run SPARQL queries against them; and, from the upload side, quite useful to have relevant information all organised in a database -- eg to be able to pull out names of creators/contributors not yet matched to Wikidata; or to slowly work on some of the data from the notes fields. And it would surely throw up some quite interesting questions -- eg how to represent a map containing 4 smaller maps, each with their relevant creators, titles, information, etc.
But I am not sure how this would stand with wikidata notability; and within the wider roadmap of the Maps project. What would be the issues pro and con creating potentially up to 20,000 such objects.
- I have always been pro adding maps to Wikidata. But in order to create sensible guidelines, it would make sense to add FRBR type works only. The question that remains to be seen is if SDC only can serve maps well enough. This has not been an option before.
- Also, have you noted the option of representing a map with several sheets as a category. MapWarper can ingest such a category and thus place all the sheets in a single view.
Also, btw, I created a new page d:Wikidata:WikiProject Maps/stats on the wikidata maps project that you might be interested in, to give an idea of the balance of which properties, types, etc are actually in use. Though the stats might get skewed a bit if/when I started bulk-adding items.
- ok, sounds reasonable
Anyhow, would be very grateful for any input you could give. Thanks, Jheald (talk) 21:43, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for your insights!
- Thanks for your thoughts. So I think I will go ahead with creating WD pages -- if in future we decide to shift the data to SDC then so be it; but in the meantime the items may be quite useful, as I think will be the experience of the process of creating them. We can always split them out from the stats page, in the way you have already done for maps of type Wikimedia route diagram (Q17146139), to separate them from the rest.
- I think I'll stick with {{WrapWD}} giving names as stated in the catalogue for the moment -- if people ask for the change, the template could easily enough be switched to give the wikidata label instead.
- The option of sub-categories is to good to hold in mind -- though the BL quite like the idea of being able to see the collection images in catalogue sequence, so I may need to think a bit more on this.
- Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. It's really useful to be able to get such feedback when setting out on a project like this! I dare say I'll be bothering you again before too long, when questions start arising creating the wikidata entries :-) . Jheald (talk) 08:54, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

editMultilingual captions beta testing
editThe Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community[1][2] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing. If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons around the second week of January, 2019.
Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons. Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires only a few steps.
The details:
- There is a help page available on how to use multilingual file captions.
- Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an account set up there, you’ll need one.
- Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with user interface (UI) elements like search.
- Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of this, Enhanced Recent Changes is enabled as it currently is at Commons, but with some UI changes.
- Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome and encouraged on the discussion page for this post.
- Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some issues. A list of known issues can be seen below.
- If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues, please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag. Use this link to file a new task already tagged with "Multimedia."
Known issues:
- Search is not currently working on Beta Commons. Search is not needed for testing captions, but service should be restored soon.
- Language name display inconsistencies in multilingual file captions
- Language names for multilingual File captions can run into the caption value in the mobile view
- Deleting a caption field that has text that exceeds the limit does not re-enable the "publish" button
- "Edit" tab for past revisions should be "restore"
- When using the back button, recently added captions sometimes don't display in Chrome
- File Captions can't be edited on mobile browsers
- Wrong font weight for some language labels on SDC captions box
Thanks!
-- Keegan (WMF) (talk), for the Structured Data on Commons Team 20:42, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)
editHi all, following up on last month's announcement...
Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:
- Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
- Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
- Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.
Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.
Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)File:Est a 3046-7.tif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
Structured Data - development update, March 2019
editThis text is also posted on the Structured Data hub talk page. You can reply there with questions, comments, or concerns.
A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:
After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.
Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.
One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel
keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.
Thanks, let me know if you have questions about these plans. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data - early depicts testing
editThe Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.
Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.
Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- I noticed that you tried out depicts on Test-Commons. Please take a moment to let the developers know what you think, whether it's answering their direct questions, leaving your own feedback, or even noting if you don't have any feedback to give at this time. It would be much appreciated. Thanks. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:43, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Translation drive Musikverket.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depicts
editAs you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data on Commons - IRC office hours this week, 18 July
editThe Structured Data team is hosting an IRC office hour this week on Thursday, 18 July, from 17:00-18:00 UTC. Joining information as well as date and time conversion is available on Meta. Potential topics for discussion are the testing of "other statements", properties that may need to be created for Commons on Wikidata soon, plans for the rest of SDC development, or whatever you might want to discuss. The development team looks forward to seeing you there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data - testing other statements
editYou can now test using other statements for structured data on the file page on Test-Commons. Some datatypes are not yet available, such a coordinates, but further support will be extended soon. You can find more information about testing on the SDC talk page. The team looks forward to your feedback. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
File source is not properly indicated: File:Distance Turkish.pdf
editThis media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Distance Turkish.pdf, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:Distance Turkish.pdf]] ).
Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- File:THL korona pese A3 tulostus eng.pdf has an OTRS permission; files you have uploaded have not. --Patrick Rogel (talk) 10:23, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, I am clearly missing something. Why the OTRS-permit of the source is not enough? AFAIK it should cover the derivate works too. --Zache (talk) 09:38, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not talking about this one. --Patrick Rogel (talk) 09:30, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Commons - Media Search
editGreetings,
The Structured Data team is working on an alternative, image-focused prototype for media search on Commons. The prototype uses categories, structured data as well as wikitext from Commons, and Wikidata to find its results. The development team would like your feedback on the prototype, as they are looking to work to further enhance the search experience on Commons. If you have a moment, please look over the project page set up on Commons to find a link to the prototype and leave your feedback on the talk page. Thanks for your time, I'll be posting message similar to this one to other pages on Commons. The team is looking forward to reading what you think. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:47, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Commons - Media Sarch, new feedback round
editGreetings,
I'm following up on a message from earlier in the year about the prototype development for Special:MediaSearch. Based on community feedback, the Structured Data team has developed some new features for Special:MediaSearch and are seeking another round of comments and discussions about the tool. Commons:Structured_data/Media_search is updated with details about the new features plus some other development information, and feedback is welcome on Commons talk:Structured_data/Media_search. Media Search works in any language, so the team would especially appreciate input around support for languages other than English. I look forward to reading about what you think. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
File tagging File:Arunesh Varade - GIF 3 - Arunesh Varade.gif
editThis media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Arunesh Varade - GIF 3 - Arunesh Varade.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020! Please help with this survey
editDear Susannaanas,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 08:28, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

OpenRefine starts SDC development! 💎
editHello Susanna! As you are very well aware, OpenRefine has started development of features for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. Would you like to be informed about ongoing work? You can sign up here to receive occasional updates on a Wikimedia talk page of your choice. Also, feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions! SFauconnier (talk) 16:21, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Hello Susannaanas,
I joined the Wikidata Con 2021 and got a discussion with other users. We chatted about maps and your project came up, so I dug for its page and brought it to the discussion. And, yes, I'am once again astonished by your project ! It so great your pushed for this and it nurtured later map discussions. Clearly a major phase of Wikimedia's map efforts. The small group of old Wikipedians/Wikidatans were remembering fondly of your tool. Thank you <3 Yug (talk) 21:15, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- I am so happy for this comment, thank you! Please join the Wikimaps Telegram channel as well! Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 12:03, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
Medea-chart database on old nautical charts
editHi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([4]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [5]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that. Registration is only required for those interested in downloading high resolution images or producing reports. Best wishes and have fun, Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:17, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for the information, @Alvesgaspar! This sounds a superb resource and a possible project, making use of the charts through the Wikimedia projects. I will personally make a deep dive into the resource, and I will be happy to provide further comments and ideas about this! Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 11:58, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Zambia has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
Need your support
editHi Susannaanas, I have created a campaign for WikiDaheim Campaign:WikiDaheim-at-unesco and merged it with Campaign:Wiki Loves Living Heritage. The result of the upload e.g. is: File:Cellar window Wohllebengasse 4 (02), Vienna.jpg (with fake WD Id). Can you please check whether this satisfies the requirements for the international contest on Living heritage, necessary categories and marker templates? thanks a lot. Any hint for improval is welcome. best --Herzi Pinki (talk) 21:13, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys
editHi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.
To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.
- A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
- A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!
Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 10:15, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Why did you undo my modification?
editSusanna, what was your reason to undo my modification of Template:Wiki Loves Living Heritage/Information? Thanks for your answer... Geert Van Pamel (talk) 18:30, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- To be honest, I thought it was my mistake. The sentence was not grammatically correct. The P31 could be added somewhere else in the sentence, but I was in a hurry to think where.
- So, the sentence was saying: This food depicts porridge, Finnish tradition. The properties here are: This P31 depicts label, description. However, it is the image that depicts porridge.
- The sentence could be rephrased into something like: This image depicts porridge, Finnish tradition (food). Or: This image depicts porridge, Finnish tradition, which is food. I have not yet thought how this will be translated to other languages, which should also be done soon. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 06:19, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, @Susannaanas. I see understand your decision now. Actually the template script has 2 other general problems:
- The hierarchical and complex if-then-else ParserFunction logic of the template should be changed into a simple Wikibase statement driven logic. I am thinking of implementing a enumerating LUA module.
- The fixed texts should be translated into the user language (instead of hardcoded English)
- Geert Van Pamel (talk) 08:42, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
- You are right. I appreciate your help with these! Please make sure I can understand the changes :-) – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 10:01, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Suspicious renaming
editCould you please clarify Ajapaik-related renamings, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Ajapaik_5642.jpg&action=history
After your renamings, new titles are not descriptive anymore. If you want to show that related to Ajapaik, then why not e.g. the title: "Ajapaik - Rephotograph of Pikk tänav, Mustpeade hoone juures. Vaade Vaimu tänava poolt.jpeg" Estopedist1 (talk) 12:25, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- I am sorry I cannot locate the issue you refer to. Some of my edits in 2016? – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 13:37, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, February 2016. These files.
- And some of them are in Category:Files of Estonia with bad file names Estopedist1 (talk) 16:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- I will forward this to people who work more with Ajapaik files, I have no personal preferences. Happy new year! – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 10:01, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
