Even though I'm Brazilian, I see no reason whatsoever for having two separate templates for Portuguese descriptions. Differences in vocabulary are really minor, similarly to those found between American and British English, Canadian and European French, or among the multiple varieties of Spanish. In spite of the differences, all these languages have just one language template each, and so should Portuguese. Please merge it with {{pt}}

- pt-br is still a valid user interface language setting users may choose in their preferences. Don't we still have various internationalization/localization mechanisms that do rely on templates matching the internal language codes being present? If so, don't delete. If there is consensus among the Brazilian/Portuguese wiki community that this distinction is not needed, then maybe pt-br should be removed from the MediaWiki software altogether? Or the left in the software, but the WMF wikis configured such that pt-br and pt are the same; and then the template be changed to simply say "Portuguese"? Lupo 15:30, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your interest in the subject. Discussions about pt and pt-br being merged in the MediaWiki software are complex and out of the scope of this request. I'd like to restrict the discussion to this template alone. In fact there's not a mutually dependent relation between user interface languages and Commons language templates. See for instance the user interface options for English and German:
- en English / en-ca Canadian English / en-gb British English
- de Deutsch / de-at Österreichisches Deutsch / de-ch Schweizer Hochdeutsch
- They have no equivalent templates here:
- Those minor differences that might lead to someone choosing pt or pt-br as their interface language are usually non-existent or acceptable when it comes to the localisation of file descriptions (which is what this template was created for).
- It should be worth noting that for two years (2008–2010) this template was redirecting to
{{pt}}
and nobody seemed to have cared or complained about it. Capmo (talk) 16:45, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
