Completely different images are minor improvements? Why?
[edit]Please take a look at File:Cité du Grand Parc模型.jpg, the current version looks like a completely different color and it feels like the object being photographed seems to be far away from the author (compared to the original version). Also, File:紐西蘭國家住屋模型.jpg shows that the current version is an overwrite of the original version, but they are two images of the same object at different angles. However, admin thinks that the author overwriting one's own files with minor improvements is OK. Completely different images are minor improvements? Why? Can anyone take a look?--125.230.72.61 125.230.72.61 07:51, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- Which "admin thinks that the author overwriting one's own files with minor improvements is OK"? If there has been prior discussion, please link to it.

MIT License SVG Logo
[edit]If an author or organization decides to create a logo in SVG format and publish it under an MIT License, how should I upload it to Wikimedia Commons? In theory, you can publish it anywhere because MIT license allows it, but I'm not sure.
Sorry for my bad english. Marcos Mapache Nitola (talk) 22:34, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Marcos Mapache Nitola: See Template:MIT. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Note that {{MIT}} has multiple versions; {{Expat}} or {{X11}}. You may want to select more appropriate one. — regards, Revi 05:11, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- If you read the MIT license text, the license can only apply to software — or more specifically "this software and associated documentation files". I doubt that MIT license coverage extends to software logos and certainly not to logos in general. In which case, the associated logo should be treated as under full copyright. The creator may well have intended an open license but MIT is simply not appropriate for this kind of content. The Creative Commons Attribution CC‑BY‑4.0 license would therefore be a better choice. Can you contact the copyright holder and request a more suitable license be applied? RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 16:31, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
TIFF Image nomination and Use of background
[edit]Wikipedia Help Desk/Quality Image Review Team,
I am seeking clarification on two specific points related to image uploads and nominations on Wikimedia Commons. Please find my questions below: 1) Quality Image Nomination for TIFF Format :- Can I nominate an image in TIFF format for the Quality Image status on Wikimedia Commons? Alternatively, is there a requirement to first convert TIFF images to JPEG format before they become eligible for Quality Image nomination? Please clarify if there are any rules or recommendations specific to file formats in this context. 2. Background Color Guidelines for Images:- Are there any specific rules on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia that require using a particular color for the image background? I would like to know if there are any guidelines on acceptable or preferred background colors to ensure my image adheres to Wikipedia’s standards or Quality Image Nomination.
I appreciate your assistance with these questions. I look forward to your response to ensure my images meet the necessary criteria for quality evaluation and proper upload. IndrajitDas 14:32, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Indrajit: TIFF format is fine, as far as I know, but Quality Images must be created by a Commons contributor, and TIFFs rarely are.
- There is certainly no general rule about colors of backgrounds; it's hard even to imagine what such a rule would look like. Presumably it is important that backgrounds not distract from the chief subject of the image, but I can't imagine being about to state that by saying something like "backgrounds should never be yellow."
- There doesn't seem to be any particularly good place to ask questions about Quality Images. Does someone have a suggestion? - Jmabel ! talk 21:27, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- TIFFs are usually useful as an archival format (offers lossless compression and 32 bits per color channel, but usually can not be viewed in a web browser). If the TIFF can be considered as huge (>100 MiB) or so, I would recommend to upload a JPEG version and to nominate it instead --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 17:12, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
File:Katsushika Hokusai, demone rosso della salicornia, pittura su seta, 1846, 02.jpg
[edit]Is this photo usable for the package design? Ksushinji (talk) 10:45, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Ksushinji: Hi, and welcome. It appears that File:Katsushika Hokusai, demone rosso della salicornia, pittura su seta, 1846, 02.jpg is usable for package design, since it was drawn in 1846. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:33, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much.
- Although the artist is from an earlier period, would it still be necessary to confirm with the holder of the photograph?
- In Japan, if the artwork is held by a museum, permission may be required from the museum, and in such cases, there may be a fee involved. Ksushinji (talk) 02:10, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Persian Meowth: Your description currently sounds a lot like a clause similar to {{Attribution}}. The requirement of usage only to shed positive light on Croatia may be a non-copyright restriction, but now, we're delving quite deep into these matters, where laypersons as most of us would be reaching their knowledge limits (further reading: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Croatia). Make Images Easier to Find/Search
[edit]Hello, I uploaded graphics we had been working on related to Trusted AI research that we want anyone to be able to use and modify. After 6 months the search for "trusted AI" still does not return the image even though the caption is "Trusted AI lifecycle". I can only find it if I search for Trusted AI TAI... I think this only works because TAI is in the filename. I just added structured data indicating that this is related to AI. Any other pointers on how I can help make this accessible to more people?

Gameplay
[edit]So I want to add a few images of gameplay for a game or two. Is it allowed (like does it go against the uploading guidelines?) to upload this?
Thanks, Lightningtx99 (talk) 04:18, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Lightningtx99. I believe this is covered in Commons:Screenshots. Basically, it depends upon the copyright status of the source of the images. If, for example, you want to take some screenshots of some kind of computer game, Commons can only host the screenshots if the computer game itself is released under a copyright license that meets Commons:Licensing. It matters not whether you can freely play the game online or whether you purchased a copy of the game, the game itself (included in-game audio and in-game graphics) needs to be released under a copyright license that's OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia Commons Copyright explanation help
[edit]Hello everyone, I am looking to upload images that are not mine and need help with copyright. Terms of conditions from the owner say: "Copyright © 2008-2024 Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia. All rights reserved. Content from this site may be transmitted without special permission provided the source is acknowledged." Now im interested if I am free to upload and if I am, under which license? Thanks to whoever helps. Persian Meowth Persian Meowth (talk) 10:13, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- You are not. Even if Croatia said it were licensed just to upload here to Commons, it would need to be licensed in such a way that it could be shared further and not just on this site. See COM:LICENSE. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 10:15, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- And in terms of images that originate from Flickr? Do the terms of use of the site allow it to be shared further? Persian Meowth (talk) 10:52, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- There's no permission to any further dissemination. The issue is the statement "All rights reserved", as Commons needs the permission for commercial utilization. Even if the legitimate copyright holder is using Flickr services for hosting his images, you cannot take them from there for an upload here. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

- Now, Im hoping im not adding complication to the problem lol. I called the author of the images that i wish to upload and they told me i am free to use the images in any way i wish as long it is in positive light of the Croatian Armed Forces and as long the source is mentioned. Furthermore, regarding the license they said to me "Content from this site may be transmitted without special permission provided the source is acknowledged" should be the basis of free use for whatever purpose as it implies that the content is uploaded for everyone to use as long as it meets the criteria of naming the source. Now this all sounds great, but I am worried because, with all this aside, content is technically under the copyright. So, how am I able to avoid it even after i had received confirmation to use the content in whichever use i might want? P.S. sorry for the long reply Persian Meowth (talk) 12:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- It is okay to upload copyrighted material here, it just needs to be licensed in a way that is compatible with COM:LICENSE. The easiest way to do that is have whomever owns the copyright license it {{CC BY 4.0}}. Unfortunately for this government ministry, there is no clause that allows the media to only be used in a positive manner for Croatia. This kind of requirement is not something that we can ensure, so as long as the copyright owner insists on that clause, we could not accept that media here. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 12:54, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Incorrect information on file pages
[edit]Hello all, just wondering what the policy is surrounding files uploaded with incorrect information e.g. descriptions. A particular example came to my attention at File:Aldhelm.malmesbury.arp.jpg; the image description says it is of a window in Malmesbury Abbey but this is incorrect, it is actually from St Aldhelm's Church in Malmesbury. There are a few sources confirming this, such as the websites for both churches. Is it acceptable to change the incorrect information that the uploader provided in light of opposing information? Vesuvio14 (talk) 12:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Vesuvio14: Hello, Yes, you can correct the information if you are certain that your information is correct, but in the case of this particular example it may be better to explain the problem on the talk page of the uploader and let them correct it if they agree with you. The license needs to be free. See COM:L for details on what that means. --rimshottalk 17:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Regarding PD pictures and higher resolution. Essentially another National Portrait Gallery situation
[edit]Given the Asian News International thing on enwiki, I'm a bit concerned about doing anything that might cause litigation against me. With that being said, there's a UK-based organization with a large volume of public domain images. Low-res copies (e.g. 600x800) are on Commons, but it's possible to rip larger images from their website using a tool. I'm not much of a programer, but I do have a moderately complete list of the ~70,000 images on Commons. Is there a procedure for doing this sort of thing? Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- IF the images are PD, what litigation might be brought against you? Since the NPG farce, the case known as "THJ v. Sheridan, 2023" has clarified that there is no copyright in reproductions of PD images. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

I need to update a logo on our company website
[edit]Hi, we just rebranded and I've been asked to update our Wikipedia page logo. Can I do that from my personal Wikipedia account or do I need any additional permissions? Any help you can give me would be great! RichW1982 (talk) 15:21, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- You may upload the new logo as a new image using your personal Wikipedia account, if so you wish. You should, however, then the company should send to permissions @ wikimedia.org a text like the one on Commons:Email_templates from an official account, to formally state that the company is licensing the logo under a free license (Wikimedia Commons only accepts images under a free license). Otherwise, it might be assumed that you were not authorized to do so. Beware: the company may actually not want to have a free license on their logo, I encourage you to make sure that the decision on whether to do that or not is taken by whoever has the right authority for that in the company. Platonides (talk) 19:38, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @RichW1982. Platonides has given you the Commons answer; but on English Wikipedia, company logos are usually uploaded to Wikipedia as non-free content, and Commons is not involved. Please see en:W:WP:LOGOS. You can (and should) use your personal Wikipedia account, but first you need to read en:w:WP:Paid editing, and make the mandatory formal declaration before editing on Wikipedia. There are few smiling photos of him before 2024. If you search for other photos from early 2023, it looks the same. It is possible that he had a dental work since then. However, the file may be missing permission. At the website, it is attributed to "LPO / Rodrigo González". It is possible that the uploader to Commons, EneasMx, is Rodrigo González, or that the photo is misattributed on the website. Filter rejects upload PDF of fragment of the scan of a copyright free paper 70+ years after author death.
[edit]Author name is clearly displayed in that image fragment of p.394 and according to Wikipedia itself he (Tadeusz Banachiewicz) died over 70 years ago, and I have ticked that info in the form. For the full work see https://users.camk.edu.pl/alex/papers/banachiewicz_orig.pdf. This seems faulty software. Go Devil Jeep engine misidentified; this could cost the USA trillions in patent fees as it's the first shell bearing motor.
[edit]The Go Daddy or Go Devil as it was later known is an opposed four engine, not an L-head inline engine as was the Hurricane engine which is depicted in your essay. Please read the patent for both the Go Devil engine and the shell bearing. Please note most astute people also file in GB as well as there the expiration time is greatly extended for patents. How do you upload a screenshot from a Youtube Video to Wikimedia Commons
[edit]Hey Y'all! I was wanting to upload a screenshot from a youtube video that is under the Creative Commons Attribution license to Wikimedia Commons. However I am not sure of the correct procedure to indicate its source and its license. If any one could provide a guide on how to upload images/screenshots from youtube videos under a creative commons license to Wikimedia Commons that would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
The title of the video I am referring to: "මේක අස්වැසුම නෙමෙයි ඇස්වැසුම සමෘද්ධියත් ප්රශස්තකරණය කරනවා - සුනිල් හදුන්නෙත්ති" Titanciwiki (talk) 02:12, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

An old version deleted in 2022 is displayed
[edit]I don't know if this can be replicated by other users, but for me the File:Evelyn Salgado Pineda.jpg when it is displayed at 180px displays an old version that was deleted in 2022 [4] : [5]. Apparently it did not fix itself although a new version was uploaded in June 2024. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:00, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: I see the correct file. This almost has to be a caching issue on your machine. Do you have this if you look with a different browser? - Jmabel ! talk 19:43, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for looking. That is strange. There, it still displays to me the old deleted image of the woman in a black sweater, not the recent image of the woman in a green vest. I don't know how there can be a cache issue with an image deleted in 2022 that I had never looked at before recently. The browser should not have the ability to find a version deleted two years ago. But you're right, it must be a cache issue of some sort, given that you see the recent image. Maybe the image will fix itself now that someone else looked at it. I'll post an update if it happens. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:44, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

- That raises an intriguing technicality. If you see the deleted ("black sweater") image at the specific url for the 180px .jpg image, but you see the current ("green vest") image in the 180px thumbnail displayed through wikicode in this section here, then what is the specific 180px .jpg url that you get when you ask the url of that "green vest" 180px thumbnail? I suppose that, for a user viewing Commons on the same machine and the same browser, the two different 180px .jpg images cannot occupy the exact same url at the same time, or can they? (That would be a Schrödinger's cat image, showing one state or the other depending on the observation.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:36, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

- Oh, that's interesting. So, the wiki code set at 180px leads you to the url of a 270px image of the new photo. Me, I still get the old image in the thumbnail set at 180px and it leads to the url of the 180px image of the old photo. Thank you for having participated in this little experiment. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:25, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

FoP?
[edit]Another user is planning on expanding Western Motel and I have photos and video clips of an exhibit covering the topic. The museum recreated the painting and made a room where people could actually spend the night. If I uploaded this one for example, is it copyrighted since it's not the actual painting? APK (talk) 09:30, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- @APK: If it's a recent work, it's copyrighted, whereas the Hopper painting may or may not be. To illustrate the article about the painting itself, you might as well use an image of the painting itself, not an image of a recent work that is different from the painting. With some research, you could find if the Hopper painting is accepted as public domain on Commons, as other Hopper paintings, e.g. Nighthawks. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:14, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- The image in question is independent of the painting. The image or video in question would be used to illustrate a section in the article about the painting to discuss a museum exhibit about hospitality and art. The exhibit creates an actual hotel room[6] for guests to sleep in based on the original design of the painting. Since it's a real, working hotel room within a museum environment, wouldn't images of the room be acceptable to use? That's the question. For example, see Category:Interiors of hotels. The difference is that this is a hotel room created inside of a museum. Viriditas (talk) 22:35, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- That's a good question. The thing is that it is not just a room, but it is designed as a part of the exhibition and it is derived from the painting. Two possible issues are is there a copyright on it as an artistically creative exhibit and how is it affected by the copyright of the painting from which it is derived? The question might get more attention at the specialized discussion page Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:57, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

- Also, unless these are selfies: if the picture is in scope for some reason, permission (presumably via COM:VRT) has to come from the photographer, not the subject of the photo (unless copyright has been formally transferred to you, in which case use VRT to show the formal transfer). - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

Copyright on anime figurines
[edit]Hello. As a preface, I am writing this hastily at work, and likewise have not read pages beyond the FAQ and some of enwiki’s image policy pages. I read a line there (which I cannot find again for the life of me) that read something like “photos of three-dimensional objects almost always generate a new copyright.” Are there no exemptions to this rule? I note the established File:Akihabara August 2014 09.JPG image and far more recent File:Reimu Hakurei cosplayer and Reimu Fumo.jpg, but I wish to be absolutely sure about this policy before I go ahead and crosspost a public domain Flickr image for my userspace. (Image in question would be two Nendoroids—or another type of figurine, not sure which image I would want yet—so, naturally, the portrayed characters are under copyright. The crux of this question is: would a photo of these figurines not be under the same copyright?) Thanks in advance! Velvetune (talk) 02:45, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Velvetune: A photo of a three-dimensional, copyrighted object ends up involving two copyrights: the copyright of the underlying work, plus the copyright of the photo. Both must be licensed by their respective owners. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel, this is what makes most sense to me, but I’m having trouble wrapping my head around why that then wouldn’t be cause to delete the latter image and resize the former one (fair use, it’s used in a few places) for non-free content, as neither underlying work is free. Velvetune (talk) 19:51, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- My prior comment was just a general statement. I hadn't looked at the files in question. The former looks to me like it should be deleted, unless it is somehow covered by Freedom of Panorama in the country in which it was taken (I didn't look to see what country; there are few places where this would be OK, though). The latter might be trickier, I don't know enough about the character(s) in question to say what is or isn't copyrightable there. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- The latter involves a character from en:Touhou Project, the doll would pose an issue but not the cosplay, IMHO. Abzeronow (talk) 00:00, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Took a look around. COM:TOYS puts it in 50/50 territory, from what I can understand—the former photo was assuredly taken in Japan, where they likewise don't fall under copyright (Indeed, some countries, such as Japan, generally consider toys to be utilitarian objects and therefore ineligible for copyright,) but Commons servers are in America, where that doesn't fly. The first linked image was kept under de minimis in the past, but in any case, it rules out any image I was considering. Thank you both for your help; I think I'll just pick a photo of, like, a library instead, haha! Velvetune (talk) 07:27, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Upon creation of my account page, somebody has requested for speedy deletion of my account despite following all the criteria. What changes do I have to make to keep my account visible on Wikidata? Please, advise. Dr. Mojibul Haque (talk) 16:10, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- If this is a question about Wikidata, you really need to ask on Wikidata. wikidata:Wikidata:Project_chat. - Jmabel ! talk 18:29, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
"Main subject visible in this work"
[edit]Hello all,
I was uploading a few pictures yesterday of libraries in my hometown and was able to successfully search in the "Main subject visible in this work" to select the library depicted for all except one - North Park Branch Library. The file is here. I went to add a Wikidata item for the library, but did not know if the wikidata item and the wikimedia commons dropdown box were related. Anyway, the question that I am asking is how to add the "main subject visible in this work" to a file post-upload
Thanks so much!

- Yes, that is populated from Wikidata. Probably there is no Wikidata item for that library branch. - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
Regarding title cards/links in PD videos
[edit]Hey all, I wanted to upload some videos of a tornado event caught on surveillance footage here under {{PD-automated}}. However, the videos contain title cards, and include a link to the website of the uploader at the end. I am wondering, does that make those videos exempt to that PD criteria, and do they need to be edited out, or are they fine to include in the upload? Some videos that I am talking about include:
St. John's Security Camera Footage
Joplin Tornado: East Middle School Surveillance Footage
Thanks in advance! ChrisWx ☁️ (talk - contribs) 20:40, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Link to website should not be a problem. I don't have time to watch them through right now, but offhand the titles look below the threshold of originality for the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

- You'll probably have to be a lot more specific about what happened for anyone to help you. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Şöyle ki, fotoğraf indirebilmek için "indir" butonu olması gerekmez mi? Ben mi bulamadım acaba? Özgürpınar (talk) 18:43, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

The copyright dilemma in SVG military insignia
[edit]I'm interested in uploading self-made SVG versions of the Turkish military insignia to feature in Wikipedia (regiment-level bodies). The issue is that (on the contrary to most countries) the Turkish copyright law does not consider government emblems/works created by pubic servants in public domain. They also don't have licenses on government websites. Therefore, as a Commons newbie, I cannot find any way to legitimately upload such content. Some people I have seen just credited such works for themselves, and claimed they are the sole owners of the work, but I think such an action would not be allowed. Thanks!
