Sardar Sarovar project
Sir, I have to upload a photo on the largest canal system in the world, originating from the Sardar Sarovar Multipurpose Project in Gujarat. The information brochure issued on the project by the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited of the Goverment of Gujarat, India does not have any copyright clauses in the brochure. The color drawing I propose to upload from this brochure, is of the Sarovar Main Irrigation Can System from the Sardar Sarovar dam, which is slated to benefit an estimated command area of 1.8 m million ha of irrigation, apart from drinking water benefits to villages in the command in Gujarat and Rajathan states of India. I tried to upload the drawing as a jpg image but it is not getting through since the red signal appearing at the bottom of upload page indicates requirement of a licence. Since it is from a free publication, how do I upload this picture now.--Nvvchar (talk) 05:27, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- Could you please provide link to copyrights law of India where copyright clauses is requirement for text/images to be copyrighted? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:26, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Food safety images
I need a combination image to represent food safety: time & temperature are the most critical components. Is there any one who can combine them so the look good?
I would like to use these three:
I need them laid out in a triangle with the clock at the apex, the warning at the right corner and the science logo on the left corner. If this could be done in SVG format, so much the better.
I would like to thank everyone in advance.

RSS Feeds for categories
Is there an RSS feed to view category additions? -- carol (talk) 11:50, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, there is a make-shift one here: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catfood.php You will see automatic links to it under the toolbox on category pages (it says "category rss feed"). --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:44, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the information -- I thought I had seen something like that somewhere. My description of what this should do was to compare it to a category web log -- I have a suggestion for a name if there is ever a reimplementation of it "catablog". -- carol (talk) 13:44, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

How do I make the image I just uploaded findable through a search?
I just uploaded a photo but can't seem to find it through the search engine. Does it take a while to get in the system, or have not really uploaded it, or otherwise done something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I'm struggling with this website
Hello! I would like to contact one of the photographers listed, Mattana. I have tried to create an account, but I can't get past the box that asks to write the word in the box and I can't SEE the word in the box. All that there is in the box is an 'x', with the graphic not coming through. I would be happy to register, if you have any suggestions how to get past the box, that would be great. But my main reason is to try to contact the photographer with a question. If you could help me with this, I would really appreciate it.

Uploading new versions
First off: I'm new here. Until today I've only hung around at Wikipedia, so please bear with me...
I've updated that
(just corrected company names) and now I'd like to upload the new version, but I don't know
- if I should use the same or another filename
- if I have to fill in information in the summary that hasn't changed (categories)
- if updating makes me the "author" in the summary (that means: what should go there?)
- if I must pick a license from the drop-down box or not
- what to fill in in "other_versions"
- how to do all of that without in such a way that I don't violate the GFDL and/or the CC license
- etc. etc.
That's lots of questions, I know, but maybe someone can tell what to do? The FAQ is rather short and I'm not sure if that is really what I want to (and what I'm supposed to) do. Also this (the part about using different filenames) seems to contradict the FAQ.
Is there no comprehensive help page about updating a file? --Berntie (talk) 22:08, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- There should be a link on the image page that says "Upload a new version of this file". Then there is a warning (in the case that you did not intend to upload into the same namespace), opt to ignore that and the image should update with a little coaxing (reloads and thumbnail resizing). -- carol (talk) 22:14, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- (EC) If you just corrected the company names, choose the same filename. The moment you do that, all the fields in the full upload form should become disabled, except one ("Additional information"). If that doesn't happen do a shift-reload (firefox) or a crtl-reload (IE). In that "Additional information" field, enter a brief description of your changes (for instance, "Corrected company names"). Then click the Upload-button.
- If you did more than just fix the names (new colors, new layout), upload under a different name. You're the author, you must choose a license, you must add a description and categories. As "Source", specify "Derivative work of [[:Image:Fcb-Beteiligungen.svg]]". Then upload.
- Or, as Carol said, click the "Upload a new version of this file" link on Image:Fcb-Beteiligungen.svg. That uploads using the same name, and using the old form layout. Put the description of your changes in the "Summary" field (delete the empty {{Information}} template first).
- Optionally, link Image:Fcb-Beteiligungen.svg in the "Other versions" field.
- The changes are really minor: The names and the date were updated (I had to enlarge the boxes a little to fit everything in properly, but that shouldn't matter.) So, is that what you meant?
- I also wonder why the "Preview" button is disabled. I mean, I'd try a little on my own, but if it's not working...?!? --Berntie (talk) 23:04, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- The "Preview" button is disabled when you upload over an existing file name because there is nothing to preview in that case. Whatever text you enter, it won't end up on the image page, only in the upload summary in the file history. The image can't be previewed because it hasn't been uploaded yet. So there's really no point in having a preview when you upload over an existing file. The button is disabled instead of removed altogether because you might change the destination filename manually, which would re-enable the preview. Disabling/enabling elements is visually less distracting than removing/re-adding elements dynamically. Lupo 07:30, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- And no, that is not yet what I meant, but it's close. Just put "Updated names" in the "Textfeld". You are overwriting the existing file, so there are no "other versions". Also check "Warnungen ignorieren", otherwise you'll get a warning again that you are about to overwrite a file, but you already know that... Lupo 07:35, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for your help. I gave it a try. It would be nice if someone could check that there's nothing left to be updated. --Berntie (talk) 11:46, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's fine. Lupo 06:17, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

What's a MIME type?
I was trying to upload a jpg file with Commonist and it gave me the message: UploadForbiddenException uploading a file with this MIME-type is forbidden. I also tried uploading thru the site and it said Files of the MIME type "application/x-php" are not allowed to be uploaded.. As far as I can tell, it's no different than any of the other gazillion photos I've uploaded. Help, pleeeeease! :) --Ebyabe (talk) 23:07, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hey there. The MIME type of your file tells your browser, and in this case, MediaWiki what kind of data it is being sent so that it can decide how to handle it. So for example a file with type
image/png
would be processed by your browser differently to a file of typetext/css
. See w:Internet media type and w:MIME for more info on MIME types. What this means in your case is, MediaWiki thinks you are trying to upload a PHP file because somewhere along the line it's being told that your file's type isapplication/x-php
. I think this is more likely to be a bug or an error in MediaWiki that is messing with your file's type than a problem on your end but one can never tell with technology. Perhaps someone more experienced with MediaWiki than I will be able to help. If not, try uploading again later. naerii 23:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)- Sounds more like a browser/firewall bug. Are you using anonymizing software or something that dynamically rewrites html headers (like proxomitron)? Or some kind of caching/proxying software? If so try not using them. Otherwise, try resetting your modem/internet connection and using a different browser. If this solves the problem then your browser is misreading the file type and passing along bad MIME info to Mediawiki. If none of these solves the problem then perhaps your file is confusing Mediawiki somehow. In that case try opening it in image editing software and re-saving it. -Nard the Bard 23:31, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

- I think you're looking for Wikipedia. This is Wikimedia Commons, which is for freely licensed media such as images and sounds. Wikipedia discourages writing about yourself, so I wouldn't recommend starting a page for yourself. However, there are lots of ways you can contribute. You might consider taking photographs of notable musicians and musical performances, and uploading them here on Commons. If you think you meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines, feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia talk page here. --Amble (talk) 19:41, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Known Licesencse that can't be coiched in the form
Can an admin add a license like "I know what I'm doing" or "other license (written in information, will be checked)" for user that know what they are doing?
Yesterday I upload a patent drawing and had the likely work to choice an as close as possible equal to "{{patent}}", but finally the best matching license that the dialog accepted was "no license" and so I get this ugly "{{no license}}" thing and a valid license on the image description page ([3]).
It can't be real, that I need to choice an invalid license (or deactivate Javascript) when I like to upload a public domain image with a valid, but not standard license template. Sure, it's also not possible to make a free ticket to upload any image, but when "other license" at a more neutral "check license" template on the image page instate of the aggressive "no license" template, then it would be an improvement for that case.
-- MichaelFrey (talk) 15:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- Use the basic upload form if you want to use templates like {{Patent}}. You don't need to select a license, just type in the code to the box. Anonymous101 talk 16:52, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, okey. I didn't know that possibilty. Thank you -- MichaelFrey (talk) 18:18, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- You could also have written {{PD patents}} into the "permission" field, which the upload form would have recognized as a PD license template. What good is {{Patent}} anyway? It seems to be just a transclusion of {{PD patents}}... Lupo 19:35, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
- Looks like someone was using it for something. However without an explanation on the page itself, it does seem useless and I have turned it back into a redirect. -Nard the Bard 19:45, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Linking to Wikipedia

- I understand that there are two ways to do so, the way you mentioned, and w:George Washington this way. My understanding is that the second way will link to the wikipedia version in the user's stated language preference. Of course, you would want to pipe it like this: [[:w:George Washington|George Washington]] to make it prettier. Is my understanding correct? --rogerd (talk) 11:28, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
- There is yet another way to link, the {{W}} template. I.e., {{w|George Washington}} gives: George Washington.
- A second parameter can be specified to display something different than the link, for instance, {{w|George Washington|G. Washington}} gives: G. Washington.
- And you can even link to another wikipedia by specifying the language code as the third parameter, for instance {{w|George Washington|G. Washington|de}} gives: G. Washington.
- Hope that helps concerning the backlinking question. -- Slaunger (talk) 11:39, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Jimbo and the inner circle is up to no good
MsTopeka on .en got very close to Jimbo and the inner circle today, and suddenly http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/54/Scopes_trial.jpg/230px-Scopes_trial.jpg was deleted as copyvio in some places in .en (her discussion page) but not other places (the main Scope's article on .en). Bizarre. Comments? What happened to the old style of linking from articles directly to Commons? Why is .en sedition-ing our images and allowing the editorial hierarchy to banish images? Doug youvan (talk) 00:23, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Scopes_trial.jpg does not exist on Commons, but rather on the English Wikipedia. It is (ostensibly) a fair use image, still protected by copyright. The English Wikipedia only allows fair use images on main articles, not on user pages. The removal of the image from her page was appropriate under Wikipedia's rules, regardless of the motive for it. If you have any more questions about Wikipedia's fair use policies please ask over there, since Commons does not accept fair use at all. -Nard the Bard 02:37, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- But it was selectively removed from some .en pages and not others. I've got news for you all: Jimbo and the inner circle is up to no good. Probably money, as normal and usual for the elite. Evidence: Type just about any phrase, name, word into a major seach engine. WP .en is likely on top. Now try those same terms on Goggle image search. Do you see Commons? I think that is strong evidence for a WP-Google deal, a silent commingling of for-profit (Goog) and non-profit (Wiki). The latter uses volunteers who work for zip dollars. The former is worth deca-billions. Worse yet, .en editors are not representative of our society, but it is perceived as authorative. This is a recipe for changes in public policy that push the POV of those that have time to edit rather than those who work hard to support their families with multiple jobs and little money and certainly no time to play edit warrior. If Commons has the power, we need to pull out. Pictures don't lie and they are worth ... unbiased words. Doug youvan (talk) 22:54, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Searching for Categories -a quick way
Is there a quick way to search for categories? When I type Beaches into- I get a page of pictures. This happens to be in Category:Beaches, so I can use the link- but I am working with pages that are not.
As I type B-E-A etc into the search box I get a helpful dropdown list of possibilities- but all are pages. If I want Category:Beaches I must type the word Category: then B-E-A etc before I get the list- and that is then truncated by the width of search box. If I type :Beaches into the search box- it is interpreted as Beaches, so some preprocessing is done. If there is no way yet to do a quick search, where one doesn't have to keep typing Category:, - wouldn't it be nice if the preprocessor interpreted :Beaches to mean Category:Beaches?ClemRutter (talk) 10:23, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- I agree some preprocessing would be nice for quickly resolving the name space, i.e., C: for Category: I: for image, T: for Template, etc.
- Concerning the drop-down box, there is a setting under User preferences -> Search -> Custom AJAX suggestion box width. try to set that at a value of, say 300 px. Then you get a wider box! -- Slaunger (talk) 10:55, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Book covers!
What about the BOOK covers? What's the license? Because I need to upload covers of Stephenie's Meyer books on Wikimedia Commons. I saw that in English Wikipedia the covers have sort of the "free license" a fair use or something like that. Is there any license here? Please answer. - Essme
- The covers of Stephenie Meyer's books are protected by copyright and are not available under a free licence, so they won't be accepted on Commons. The English Wikipedia does accept material that is fair use, but Commons does not, so you cannot upload these images here. See also Commons:Image casebook#Book covers. Thank you. I didn't know that. - Essme

Fair Use question
On this Smithsonian Institution museum web site they say one can use an image under their "Use of Content from this Website" under their copyright page as: Fair use of copyrighted material includes the use of protected materials for non-commercial educational purposes, such as teaching, scholarship, research, criticism, commentary, news reporting, and other content. Can I then upload and use this picture into Commons and use it for an article? How do I describe its' license then? Can one help me on this. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:25, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Small favor from someone who knows how to edit Wikipedia. I'm trying to add a picture I found on Google image to a Wikipedia article, but frankly the entire process has me confounded. Can someone for whom this is an easier task place the image at the following URL in the article for "Guided rat"?

Delete image
Hi, I recently uploaded Image:Qxz-ad154.gif, intending to use it for a Wikipedia ad. But the filename is already taken for another Wikiproject (though the image has not been uploaded yet). Also there are some changes I need to make to the image, and will upload it again when those are complete. I tried uploading a newer version, but somehow that doesn't seem to have worked and the old file is still there. Can an admin delete this image? Use of Images for book publishing
HI, I have a quick question. I am writing and self publishing a book with Lulu and would like to use some of the images from the Wikipedia commons. Would I be correct in my understanding that I can use the images from the commons as long as I attribute them to the creator, or first five creators and include a copy of the GDFL in my book and then my book comes under the GDFL. If that is the case, with one image I found it says that it is released under the GDFL as follows:["Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "GNU Free Documentation License"."]. Does this mean that I don't have to include a copy of the GDFL or do I have to include a copy. Thank you for your help.
Aaron--Ajwatson82 (talk) 13:21, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- If you're using a GFDL image you will likely need to have your whole book under GFDL as well. Note that some other images at commons are available under more permissive licenses (and you could always get a special license with the author). "no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts" is not saying that you can skip attaching a coppy of the license. You need to include a copy of the GDFL. But asking these questions here isn't the way to go for publishing a book. Read the GFDL and ask your lawyer. Platonides (talk) 13:37, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Upload Image
I have been editing the article on musician Patti Rothberg. I want to upload a photo of her. I have contacted Ms Rothberg and she has sent me a photo with the name of the photographer. How do I go about uploading this image?
I haven't found a category that seems suitable. It's not my work, it's not public domain, it's not licensed (as far as I know) - it's just from the artist with her permission. That should be all right! I thought this process would be a bit easier than I've found it. Hopefully I've just overlooked something, but I don't know what it is. Help!

- Hi, to start everything has a licence but like you sad you had permission to use the image. Now you must send the email with the permission to Commons:OTRS so they can archive the permissio in the system. You recieve a ticketnumber from the otrs team. If you put that number on the image when you upload it and your done. Sterkebaktalk 17:08, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

This photo here: [11] was, according to the blurb, "a handout picture released by the Iraqi Presidency". Does that mean I can import it into commons? AndrewRT (talk) 22:55, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
- According to the copyright office we do not have any relationship with the Iraq in reguards to copyrights and as such the images are public domain.[12] However, Jimbo has stated (in regards to pictures from Iran) that we should "generally respect Iranian copyright law as best we can, the same as we do for other countries around the world".[13] I hope that helps.J.smith (talk) 22:15, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Severe display problem in commons when uploading gifs cropped with ImageMagick
Hi!
I've been uploading cropped images made with ImageMagice. I've noticed a severe display problem in commons while ImageMagick displays fine in my laptop. Here is an example of what occurs :
- source file: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2005Apr24N.GIF
- cropped gif from this source: 2005-04-24_Lunar_Eclipse_Visibility.gif
- A lot of white area that should be removed when cropping, and doesn't appear on my computer with
display
when I re-download the file from commons.
- A lot of white area that should be removed when cropping, and doesn't appear on my computer with
- cropped png from this source: Image:2005-04-24_Lunar_Eclipse_Visibility.png
- The thumbnail doesn't display, the image displays fine on my computer and in full size. I tried to generate the thumbnail (without success) as the FAQ suggests.
- the command I used:
convert -crop 1000x500+0+1000 source_file cropped_file
.
Does anyone have ideas? Thanks in advance for a solution.

Uploader's info lost in migration
A bot moved this image from nl.wiki and now there is no trace of any local information: Image:Willy Bocklandt 1967.jpg
It should be like this: Image:Bernard Van de Kerckhove 1967.jpg
While these are not my pictures, I still spent a lot of time in identifying the riders and making cuts from the originals, so a little credit is appreciated...
How can I get the original info back?
Regards Tekstman (talk) 22:16, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- The file history of that image is from a flickr upload bot and not one of the bots that moves images from the wikipedia's to here. Perhaps the image at nl.wiki was deleted as a duplicate? If you do not have the deleted information still, (identification of the subjects of images is good to have) -- what I would do is to check the log of the image at nl.wiki and attempt to communicate with that admin about what happened and see if the information can be retrieved and put onto the image that is here. -- carol (talk) 23:34, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
